it also exposes the mindset of some leavers that would like to see the EU collapse and far right nationalism take hold in europe.

Peregrina · 29/03/2017 22:44

And leaving the EU and returning to the lira would be an utter utter disaster.

My recollection of the Italian currency before the Euro was that it was a disaster. Who remembers the shortage of change, and being given a handful of sweets instead? (1972 for certain, for those who don't remember.)

jaws5 · 29/03/2017 22:48

Yes, they want EU to fail and go back to hard nationalism - the one that used to create war after war. But i believe (and beliefs are now as important as facts) that EU is going to get stronger and UK is the one who's going to disappear and then England will be truly isolated.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 29/03/2017 22:52

I think that is your wishful thinking there mistri . Le Pen was in the lead in today's opinion poll and she said she is committed to a Frexit referendum
I don't think you understand how French elections work.

Melassa · 29/03/2017 23:13

I'm another who finds this armchair analysis based on nothing but the British gutter press and common old prejudice extremely tiresome.

I live, work and travel frequently in continental EU countries and not one person I've spoken to thinks that Brexit is a clever idea to be emulated at the first opportunity. Everyone - and in particular the Swiss, who are not even in the EU - think the UK has taken leave of its senses and are puzzled by the rampant xenophobia and other such unedifying behaviour from some members of the government. They are further puzzled that there appears to be no plan and are shocked that the Brits, who have hitherto been held in high esteem as pragmatic and fair, could have so easily descended into a frothing rabble of bigotry and completely mislaid any common sense, or indeed, respect for the truth.

Melassa · 29/03/2017 23:20

And I agree Bananagio about the misrepresentation of the Italian referendum. It properly boils my piss. The entire contents of the subject being voted on was online and there was even a version in English! But did the Daily Mail screechy fuckers bother checking? Of course not! Probably too many words.

Melassa · 29/03/2017 23:23

I blame the lack of rinsing of dishes after washing up. All that detergent entering the bloodstream and crossing over to the brain.

And on that note, I'm off to bed.

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 29/03/2017 23:37

Holland. Because they're Netherlands hence Nexit. But I guess that's not what you meant. Actually there's a lot of EU countries whose constitution doesn't allow for a referendum so as things stand it won't matter what their people think or want. Who knows who may be next? They're going to want to wait to see what happens to us presumably. If it goes well, they'll be queuing up, if not, not so much. If you just read/listen to news, opinion polls etc you can easily think most of ' Europe' are totally pro EU, but who's promoting this news etc? What's their agenda? If you go there often, for work e.g., dealing with and speaking to real people, business people, it's easy to find many many of them who do not feel the current EU set up works to their best advantage. And, for instance in Germany, they are starting to sound very much like they will use this as a stick to beat the likes of Merkle with. German elections this year, should make for interesting Brexit negotiations.

Loving this thread

Good on the MN europhiles educating the brexiters with actual facts! And cos the brexiters cant fight back with the daily fail bollocks the quiet is wonderful

Thank you mes amies

This.

So sad that people want to see the failure of an institution whose raison d'etre was to ensure peace and stability through economic interdependence. I do believe that the fact that Britain was never occupied during the war has led to people distancing themselves from this ideal.

DevelopingDetritus · 30/03/2017 06:33

Why are you so obsessed that out voters read the Daily Mail, I've never looked at the bloody thing.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/03/2017 06:54

Very few people read the daily mail despite getting a million hits a day. Those that do only read the celeb gossip. Our views are formed in a vacuum. Hmm

DevelopingDetritus · 30/03/2017 07:20

Certainly sounds like yours are. Hmm

Bananagio · 30/03/2017 07:44

Grin at detergent theory melassa

re the Daily Mail - well their stance is no shock, ditto the Express. I have been more disappointed by some of the ill-informed articles in the guardian re their articles on other EU situations. And the Independent has become as click baity as the Mail! The FT seems to provide the only articles re these issues that seem to have been researched.

Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 07:45

Developing. Maybe you should do a little research regarding the role of the media in the referendum campaign. It is possible that you are not representative of all leavers

Anyway I don't know why anyone who voted to leave the EU would care what happened to it. Not our business now is it and we have no influence even if we care. Don't get to divorce and then tell your ex who they sleep with do you

LondonMum8 · 30/03/2017 07:48

Project Reality begins. Brexiters' coping strategies are as pathetic and amusing as ever.

misspriggy · 30/03/2017 07:50

I hope the French leave and the EU collapses. The EU's horribly dictatorial, un democratic and incompetent.

LillianGish · 30/03/2017 07:52

So sad that people want to see the failure of an institution whose raison d'etre was to ensure peace and stability through economic interdependence. Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 07:54

miss None of your business is it. I think you should stay out if demanding anything for ther countries

NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 07:55

WE AREN'T IN THE EU (well not really any more) WHICH IS WHAT YOU WANTED

Just shouting in case you missed article 50

aurynne · 30/03/2017 08:25

I am Spanish, and I can confirm leaving the EU has never crossed Spain's mind (not even in Catalonia and the Basque Country, who despite trumpeting how much they want to separate from Spain, kiss the EU's arses at the least opportunity), and our collective opinion of the UK's Brexit is:

a) You guys have lost your mind
b) There are many more racist, obnoxious, ignorant Brits than we thought there would and Brexit has given them the chance to shine.

Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 08:34

aurynne Agreed. Have been reading linked in articles from French business academics they are literally laughing at us

It's fucking embarrassing

misspriggy · 30/03/2017 08:48

Was Germany's backing of the Coup in Ukraine in 2014 an example of that peace and stability Lillian?

Thank you for speaking for the entire Spanish nation aurynne. I had no idea that the people you represent had such a low opinion of us? So the vote to leave had nothing to do with British people wanting the right to make their own laws that are right for their own country and not to have laws and regulations that dont serve our best interests, imposed on us from outside, by an unelected cabal that they haven't voted for and cant remove? Nah we're all Waaaaacists!!! What a compelling arguement.

No doubt the tens of thousands of your hard working and well motivated compatriots that have and are still, flocking here to find jobs and some kind of future for themselves, are feeling the brunt of all those racist, Brown shirt, Brexiters that prowl our streets these days?

Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 08:51

Miss get over it. You won. Concentrate on the plan ahead. The EU is not of your concern

Tell us what deal we will get. How many unicorns for me

Oh and before you carry on attacking a Spanish person fir their concerns we are racist. I am British. We have far too many racist nut jobs. And your post is verging on racist to me

misspriggy · 30/03/2017 08:58

Can you point to what specifically I said that was verging on racist and why? And why hasn't the there are so many racist, obnoxious, ignorant Brits statement, not penetrated this rather thin skin of yours?
