We keep getting told the Uk can get a deal like Canada, Turkey or other non-EU countries have, without FOM.
Those deals do not provide the same privileges as EU members:
They have quotas, restrictions and must obey EU regulations

e.g. After CETA, Ron Davidson, head of international trade for the Canadian Meat Council stated:
"We do not have what we would call commercially viable access to the European market".

The deal with Turkey abolished tariffs, but did not give free acess. This is what that means:

www.ft.com/content/b4458652-f42d-11e6-8758-6876151821a6

"On a recent Saturday at the Kapikule border crossing, about 30 minutes drive from the Turkish city of Edirne, a line of trucks 4km long stretched along the highway, inching along glacially towards the Bulgarian checkpoints.
"Today is a good day", said Ibrahim Kurtukcu, a 42-year trucker who had been waiting 14 hours.
"Last week the line was 7km long".
The record is 17km. It can take up to 30 hours to get through to the other side."

Of course, UK ports (and French ports) do not have the capacity, facilities, storage space or trained staff to handle customs processing of the vast amount of British exports & imports.

Building this additional capacity - where ? - would take several years and there are no signs that even the planning stage has started.

In the gig economy, lower skilled workers often don't get paid more than degular employees, let alone 60% more.

And there's the problem. The cost of self-employment are displaced onto the employee and the government.

It's right that HMRC should crack down on self-employment where the law is being broken, but really the problem here is perverse incentives that incite people to break the law. In France being self-employed is a PITA (and expensive) - no one would pretend to be self-employed if they could get a salaried contract. The right approach probably lies somewhere in the middle!

A good review of
May by the London Review of Books, although I don't agree with his last couple of sentences - he seems to have dragged Labour in from nowhere. Nor would I agree that Europe destroyed Thatcher - I would give the Poll Tax the blame for that.

Other information is quite enlightening, and confirms what I always thought of May; a diligent plodder who lacks spark. Whether she would have delivered a Remain verdict instead of Cameron is debatable, but I suspect that Cameron would have made a better negotiator for Brexit than May will.

Badders123 · 09/03/2017 17:54

She has no intention of negotiating though, has she?

lalalonglegs · 09/03/2017 18:00

I think she also thinks she is the new thatcher

She is THAT deluded

prettybird · 09/03/2017 18:17

She can walk away and blame the nasty, unreasonable EU for not letting her have her cake and eat it giving her everything she wants.

And the sheeple will believe her because the Daily Mail agrees Hmm

HashiAsLarry · 09/03/2017 18:17

Aren't we supposed to negotiate a deal per article 50. Wouldn't the EU have legal grounds against the UK if she failed to negotiate? That wouldn't prevent her negotiating badly of course.

Nor would I agree that Europe destroyed Thatcher - I would give the Poll Tax the blame for that.

Thatcher was not bought down by the public - they never had a chance. She was bought down by her own Tory MPs.

Gore Vidals prediction (which I watched as a student) came before the poll tax, and the interviewer (which I am sure was Parkinson) challenged it, as it seemed so far fetched (remember in 1988 Thatcher was riding the wave of winning 3 elections in a row).

The other (typically waspish) comment Vidal made was when Parkinson tried to sell the UK as a beacon of culture to the world ...

"I was speaking to a Japanese friend"; Vidal said "about the importance of Britain in the world, and my friend said: 'The only thing we need from the British is their language. And we've already stolen it.'
