Stop the silence

We have heard much talk about "the will of the people" recently. If you are not one of the people supporting the Tory hard Brexit or "Brexit at any cost", you may be interested in "Stop the silence", which gives a voice to the rest of us - those who voted Leave thinking of a Norway-style model, those who thought they were saving the NHS, those who voted Remain. Inkanta

It appears that Misti can only post patronising links to get her point across.

EmilyAlice · 28/02/2017 07:07

Inkanta British citizens living abroad for more than 15 years do not have a vote. The government has said that they will change this, but nothing has happened yet.

Inkanta · 28/02/2017 07:08

Thank you Emily Smile

Mistigri · 28/02/2017 07:15

I'm not an "expat", which is a word used to describe Britons living abroad who consider themselves to be superior to ordinary migrants.

I'm a Briton exercising my right, as an EU citizen, to freedom of movement, aka a migrant - which is what I already said above in a post that was also quoted by another poster this morning (except that this person assumed I was an EU migrant, because, y'know, Britons are expats not migrants Grin).

Inkanta · 28/02/2017 07:21

Mistigri

I don't want to argue with you - I just wanted to ask why you weren't able to vote in the referendum. I think you are saying that you are a British person living in Europe?

Peregrina · 28/02/2017 08:26

It was made clear by all sides in the debate that leaving the EU meant leaving the single market. Its only after the result, remainers are pretending no one knew what they were voting for.

Farage himself was extolling the Norway model. Funny how he didn't realise that they were in the single market.

HPFA · 28/02/2017 08:34

I watched debates on TV and read a fair amount of newspaper coverage. Some people arguing for Leave wanted to stay in the Single Market, some didn't. All were consistent though in saying that these were decisions to be made by Parliament if the vote was to Leave. It was never said "we won't tell you what Brexit means in practice but if the vote is to leave we will then do whatever we like and tell those of you who disagree to shut up".

Prior to the Referendum, I don't recall any debates about EU citizens being used as bargaining chips either. It was all going to be hunky-dory, of course they would be able to stay.

Now, we don't know - they may be able to stay- but this will be after being put through months of anxiety, so some who are in a position to, have, not unwisely, decided to go elsewhere.

true peregrina

If you voted conservative at the last election, you voted for this referendum to happen.

That may not be why you voted conservative, but it was in the manifesto.

Kaija · 28/02/2017 11:03

If you voted conservative you also voted for the promise to remain in the single market, whatever the outcome of the referendum.

Peregrina · 28/02/2017 11:15

If you voted conservative you also voted for the promise to remain in the single market, whatever the outcome of the referendum.

I am a little baffled as to why those Conservatives who did vote for the commitment to the Single Market aren't making more noise now. I imagine that quite a few have gone over to the Lib Dems, but there must be others who haven't and are extremely unhappy at the way Theresa May is going?

SapphireStrange · 28/02/2017 11:22

Because they're more concerned for their jobs/arses than for their 'principles'.

Peregrina · 28/02/2017 11:25

But - they are not all MPs(!) and some of those jobs will be compromised by not being in the Single Market. Perhaps people in those jobs are the ones who have gone over to the Lib Dems after thirty years of voting Conservative?

SapphireStrange · 28/02/2017 12:16

Oh, sorry, Peregrina; for some reason I thought you DID mean MPs.

Yes, I'd guess a lot of unhappy Tories are the ones who are improving the Lib Dems' by-election results.

I also think there's a strong strain of British apathy – see something happen you're not happy with, moan about it and then shrug your shoulders and just say 'Oh well'/'Typical'/'Nothing changes, does it?' etc.

woman12345 · 28/02/2017 12:26

Oh well'/'Typical'/'Nothing changes, does it?' etc.
Which is what happened in 1934.
Apathy enables.

Peregrina · 28/02/2017 12:31

Which is what happened in 1934.

Which is why I feel I must protest. It may stop something; if not, at least I will have tried.

woman12345 · 28/02/2017 13:46

Absolutely peregrina we have to.

TheFullMrexit · 28/02/2017 14:22

1934 and even less resistance when the soviet union drowned country after country under its regime... Creating a federalist monothilithic block, which is why it's crucial to get out of this one now.

SapphireStrange · 28/02/2017 14:55

Likening the Soviet Union to the EU is the funniest thing I've seen all day.

Assuming you've been to more than one other EU country, do you feel that they form a 'monothilithic block'?

comfortandjoyce · 28/02/2017 14:58

Which is what happened in 1934.

Because leaving the single market = the rise of the Nazis, right? Don't you ever get embarrassed by these wildly overblown comparisons?

So are you calling another poster a liar biggsy77? I have reported your post.

biggsy77 · 28/02/2017 15:44

Kaija
Little African, Little Indian, Little Jew..... Stop me when you consider my point to be offensive.

You know mocking someone based on their national identity is perfectly reasonable. So pray tell, what is your nationality? If you happen to be a second generation immigrant, what are your parent nationality? Let me mock that. If you are indeed British through and through. Then indeed we are lost as a nation.

Do you even PC Bro?
