Brexit

Westministenders: Johnson defends his President whilst we try to defend Britain

Theresa and Donald
Sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First come Brexit
Then comes the Ban
Then comes the
Removal of Human Rights
… Damn

(Shamelessly stolen from a protest sign)

A couple of weeks ago people were still asking why we were talking about Trump on a Brexit thread. I think the answer has made itself all together too apparent.

What is happening in the US is not going to stop. It’s not going to get any better any time soon. The situation is grave with suggestions there has been a coup. What happens next is not going to be pretty. American institutions are struggling. The rule of law has been undermined. We are not talking about a developing country. We are talking about the country which has stood for freedom and democracy.

Our leadership looks weak in the face of this. We look like we are not only appeasing but endorsing. For what? A trade deal that he could revoke in 30 days?

We have but one question. How many of our ‘British Values’ will have to be sacrifice for the special relationship?

Make no bones about this: Cosying up to Trump threatens our national security. It threatens our democracy. It ruins what little moral authority we have left. It threatens our ties with Europe who we DO still need to have a relationship even if we are outside the EU. This is not world leadership. This is appeasement. This is cowardly weak and downright desperate.

Let us also not forget ‘Good old Boris’ pretending to be Churchill and calling the EU Nazis and Hitler during the Referendum and on several occasions since. He has now had the bare faced audicity to stand in the House of Commons and call MPs out repeatedly for ‘trivalising the holocaust’ or for making comparisons with the 1930s when they saying they have been told this by survivors of the holocaust. It is SHAMEFUL. I also note how many times Johnson referred to Trump being democratically elected as if this makes all the difference and he can’t possibly be a dictator if elected.

Why do they want to use the parallel themselves and HATE it when its used for things they use? Fascists hate being pointed out as fascists.
What would happen if you put it to the public? You have a choice, The EU or Trump? What would they say. At its most basic this is what Brexit is now. You can not hide it or disguise it any longer.

Get used to this. Be prepared to protest, to keep challenging, to keep calling things as they are. Fatigue might set in, but we need to keep on. This is for the long haul.

Today the a50 Bill starts in parliament. It’s not looking good, as it looks like MPs will completely fail in their DUTY to hold the government to account and will not have the balls to add amendments to the bill.

If it passes without any, get worried. It is not just about the EU.

It never was.

Well if Republicans think Australia is America's strongest ally, they must be awfully pleased with Trump's phone call with Turnbull.

I am wondering why people such as Sir Richard Branson are not stepping up. I mean if Arron Banks is bale to sponsor the nasties, Branson could sponsor a pro-EU or at least pro single market communication campaign.

I am also wondering what the significance of Obama holidaying with Sir Branson might be? Are they brainstorming how to save the world?

I agree, the political world in England is full of basket cases, but it isn't much better in Scotland. Yes you have the choice of SNP, but they are another bunch not to be trusted, and can't really affect the wider political situation in the UK, no matter how much they think they can. I think NS has come out of all of this pretty well though, but will end up probably going a bit crazy over the next few years if she can't deliver what she wants (note - not necessarily what the Scottish people want).

I'll spare you the inner workings of the word association that took me from basket cases to monkeys but I have realised that it may not be true that a monkey with a typewriter will eventually type the complete work of Shakespeare yet I reckon they may be able to turn out a brexit white paper

Absolutely astonishing Rotherham results Shock
Many pissed off voters

I've thought for months that Labour have chosen the worst possible strategy:

fighting the Tories and UKIP for the 52% while letting the LDs fight unopposed for the 48%.
at the same time repelling Leave and uncommited voters by their chaotic incompetence.

If Brexit goes badly wrong, Labour needn't expect to reap the benefit when they are complicit - many voters would probably just stick with the Tories, or switch to the Liberals - who kept warning if the dangers

Also, some of us will never forgive Labour for not fighting hard against the far right and the hard right.
So many Labour supporters too are excusing & minimising UKIP and Trump - friends & associates of those supporters may tell them to fuck off if they come round after a crash trying to drum up Labour support.

As far as Rotherham goes, it is still very much a Leave area - why it beats me, because they know that Thatcherism was the cause of much of their misery, and the Tories since haven't done anything.

How was it the BBC described it, "The world is having to get used to Trump's version of 'diplomacy' " or something like that?

I think some care needs to be taken in interpreting local council by-election results. They're generally decided on very low turnouts and can be disproportionately influenced by local issues and personalities. I'm not sure they can be relied on to predict national trends or future GE results.

Of course higher rate taxpayers have no more right to vote than anyone else - it's a ridiculous martydom windup to claim any poster here was advocating that
(though a few very rightwing conservatives in the Uk & US have whispered over the years about excluding welfare claimants or illiterates) Hmm

The poor always suffer the most when the economy tanks
Money buys more choices for the well off:

. They can cut back a bit on luxuries, whereas those on low wages or benefits have no luxuries left to cut, just essentials.
. They are far less affected if the govt has to chooses to cuts back on the benefit cuts and the nhs
. They are more likely to be able to keep their job / find another
. They are more likely to be able to move abroad
Those on benefits probably can't choose to emigrate if their benefits are cut - well they can, but it's not a threat the govt cares about

. They take their skills and their assets with them; they take their purchasing power & the associated service jobs out of the economy
==> So governments - especially Tories - protect the interests of higher rate taxpayers.

The costs of Brexit will be paid by those who are least able to afford to do so

Care yes, I would agree. Dismiss outright? Depends on whether its part of a wider pattern that is being repeated across the country. It depends on the reasons people are saying for changing votes.

If the word Corbyn is coming up when its at local level, then there's a problem. If the word Brexit is coming up when its local level, then there's a problem.

I do agree though the council results Sunderland and Rotherham result probably should be seen as outliers rather than reflective of a revolution.

However both have shown that people are less loyal to Labour than they were in the past though and people will no longer just vote for a donkey wearing a red rosette, which in some places is a significant thing even at local level: the tribal vote is disappearing.

I also agree that Westminister voting intention is different. The polls have not shifted in terms of support for the LDs on that. There has to be a noticeable change for things to really be significant. That hasn't happened. This is the barrier the LD need to smash.

My observations do seem to suggest that there is a polarisation going on though at National Level, which might mean that the LD will do better than might be anticipated. I believe the LD are doing well in certain pockets across the country. When you crunch figures on popular vote based on national polls, they have gained a significant number of votes. They are not back up to 2010 levels. (I think they are still at least a 1/3 down on that). I certainly would not expect them to get as many seats at a GE as they got in 2010 if there was a GE tomorrow. But they would definitely make a few gains...

Hmm, imo, Branson is very good at getting himself maximum publicity with minimum spend: the reason that the Obamas are holidaying with him is so that he can get his photo in the paper with a much loved family. Branson will talk a good talk about campaigning for whatever anti-Brexit measure will best deliver him more air-time or column inches but he'll go very quiet when it's time to put some money in the hat.

I have worked with Branson on a venture which was in a new sector for him. As a fellow dyslexic I recognised that he was not going to be a detail person but he takes it to a whole new level, no interest whatsoever in specifics / planning. Even for me it was very frustrating. He really does just fly on charm and wheeler dealering. I doubt very much he has any plan in hosting the Obamas beyond attention seeking and that it is fun to be hosting the Obamas. From experience I certainly would not be wasting any energy on hoping he might be a counter to Banks who I suspect is a control freak who understands the specifics of effective propaganda campaigning only too well.

Yes, but how do you determine the existence of a wider pattern? Council by-election results may simply be too statistically noisy to extract any broader trends.

Human beings love to sees patterns, even when what they're really looking at is just noise. That doesn't mean the results should be dismissed, but we do have to be aware that sometimes we may be seeing the patterns that we want to see.

I agree we shouldn't make too much of by election results. Nor should we get too excited about increased party membership - we may be able to get more excited when we see a couple of things - new members renewing for subsequent years, and members turning out and becoming active.
