Theresa and Donald
Sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First come Brexit
Then comes the Ban
Then comes the
Removal of Human Rights
… Damn

(Shamelessly stolen from a protest sign)

A couple of weeks ago people were still asking why we were talking about Trump on a Brexit thread. I think the answer has made itself all together too apparent.

What is happening in the US is not going to stop. It’s not going to get any better any time soon. The situation is grave with suggestions there has been a coup. What happens next is not going to be pretty. American institutions are struggling. The rule of law has been undermined. We are not talking about a developing country. We are talking about the country which has stood for freedom and democracy.

Our leadership looks weak in the face of this. We look like we are not only appeasing but endorsing. For what? A trade deal that he could revoke in 30 days?

We have but one question. How many of our ‘British Values’ will have to be sacrifice for the special relationship?

Make no bones about this: Cosying up to Trump threatens our national security. It threatens our democracy. It ruins what little moral authority we have left. It threatens our ties with Europe who we DO still need to have a relationship even if we are outside the EU. This is not world leadership. This is appeasement. This is cowardly weak and downright desperate.

Let us also not forget ‘Good old Boris’ pretending to be Churchill and calling the EU Nazis and Hitler during the Referendum and on several occasions since. He has now had the bare faced audicity to stand in the House of Commons and call MPs out repeatedly for ‘trivalising the holocaust’ or for making comparisons with the 1930s when they saying they have been told this by survivors of the holocaust. It is SHAMEFUL. I also note how many times Johnson referred to Trump being democratically elected as if this makes all the difference and he can’t possibly be a dictator if elected.

Why do they want to use the parallel themselves and HATE it when its used for things they use? Fascists hate being pointed out as fascists.

What would happen if you put it to the public? You have a choice, The EU or Trump? What would they say. At its most basic this is what Brexit is now. You can not hide it or disguise it any longer.

Get used to this. Be prepared to protest, to keep challenging, to keep calling things as they are. Fatigue might set in, but we need to keep on. This is for the long haul.

Today the a50 Bill starts in parliament. It’s not looking good, as it looks like MPs will completely fail in their DUTY to hold the government to account and will not have the balls to add amendments to the bill.

If it passes without any, get worried. It is not just about the EU.

It never was.

I don't think they will vote for the single market. They will vote with the Government. They are all too scared of a General Election.
As for misleading the public....tuition fees....LibDems always keep promises, don't they?
Oh, there will be champaign all right. Do you think the French will refuse to sell to us? Don't think so.

Badders123 · 01/02/2017 21:32

I'm not excited about it tbh
But what's the alternative?
What a shitshow
Well
It's done
(Sort of)
Let's hope all those on the brexit arms thread are correct and we are all "traitors"
Jesus Christ
Can't believe some of the stuff that's being bandied about....trump would be proud
If wanting fair treatment for women, refugees, LGBT and ethnic minorities makes me a bleeding heart liberal (?) than I shall wear that badge with pride
Good luck everyone

My Lib Dem MP from an area that voted remain abstained from the vote

What a lily livered weasel.

TheElementsSong · 01/02/2017 21:40

What a lily livered weasel.

Yes indeed.

Although to be fair, they pretty much all were today.

Our next job, will be campaigning on parliamentary sovereignty:
^One of the remarkable features of British political history is that no point in the 20th Century did it succumb to dictatorship, despite a constitutional settlement that, since 1911, has had the difficulty mode set all the way down to “Casual” as far as any wannabe autocrat is concerned.
Not just because there no limits to what the executive, provided it has a majority in parliament, can do. But also because of the wide range of powers reserved to the sovereign – that is, thereotically the Queen but in practice whoever the sitting Prime Minister is – across a wide swathe of policy areas.
What all MPs need to realise is this: until Article 50 is triggered they have immense leverage over Theresa May. Once this bill has passed, power will pass from Parliament to two places: *the first is Downing Street and the second will be the negotiating rooms where May and the EU27 negotiate our exit. They need to stop refighting the referendum battle and do more spadework as far as the Brexit deal is concerned^

I want all those things too.
You can be a Leave voter, not succumb to hysteria, virtue signalling & handwringing & still believe in & fight for those things btw.

May's mate, may be detaining a 7year old with child with cancer according to this tweet trail.

more fake news

That's you told, woman. If it doesn't describe unicorns shitting rainbows flying over the joined hands of Trump and May, it must have been made up.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 21:54

told?

TheElementsSong · 01/02/2017 21:56

more fake news

That ^ being the immediate (and only) response to your post about the child with cancer being detained.

80% of UK exports are services, not goods
Unfortunately FTAs rarely include services and the WTO hardly touches them.

Biggest banks may move 35,000 jobs from the City to Dublin & Frankfurt
Many other jobs of course depend on these.
Some pre-Brexit plans for new jobs have been shelved.

List of which banks planning what:

Badders123 · 01/02/2017 21:58

If that's the case semi you voted for the wrong side
I'm quite depressed that so many MPs towed the party line tbh
But - then again - maybe they figure they are paid to sift through all the reports/papers and understand it and act accordingly, rather than people who believe anything that's written on the side of a bus

Farage won't stay around to watch this descend into chaos
He has already said he's leaving - interestingly the US is prob off the table now as Trump seems to have abandoned him...

Peregrina · 01/02/2017 21:58

Do you think the French will refuse to sell to us? Don't think so.

No, but expect it to be much more expensive, as for example, French cheeses are in Norway.

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 22:00

If that's the case semi you voted for the wrong side

I disagree.

We don't need to be shackled to the EU to have those things.

Badders123 · 01/02/2017 22:00

Of course they will still sell us champagne, and cheese, and olive oil and whatever else
BUT
At massive increases in price (see norway)
Ok for some I guess

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/02/2017 22:01

You can be a Leave voter, not succumb to hysteria, virtue signalling & handwringing & still believe in & fight for those things btw.

you say this and then immediately launch into lazy insults/cliches.

What have ukip/brexit campaigners done for women, LGBT and minority groups out of interest?

Badders123 · 01/02/2017 22:03

I disagree
The EU has made laws which have protected every one of the groups I have metioned
Not to forget workers rights, health and safety and pesky things like maternity leave
Ah well
Never mind
"We" can do what we like now!! Right?
We will end up like the US with privatised healthcare and no workers rights

Or the lizards will have taken over by then.....

HashiAsLarry · 01/02/2017 22:04

Well they've done a fair bit towards getting rid of some of those minority groups ghost Wink

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 22:05

What have ukip/brexit campaigners done for women, LGBT and minority groups out of interest?

Well that's just a big old straw man, isn't it?

Over 17 million Leave voters, including LGBT, women, numerous races etc.
I'm pretty sure there'll be a sizeable number within that 17 million+ that have done a fair bit tbh.

TheElementsSong · 01/02/2017 22:06

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2017 22:06

The UK has always been free to export to the all the countries with whom the EU has trade deals.
Germany manages to do so.
Problem is, the UK isn't reliably able to produce and deliver enough high quality goods that customers want to buy
The one advantage of Brexit is the much cheaper pound, but the UK could have just chosen to devalue rather than have it forced by the market - that was losing control of the currency level!

Outside the EU, the UK can make lots of trade deals with Zimbabwe, Mali etc
Or make a new trade deal with big markets like India
Trouble is, they want thousands more visas for their citizens, without the current income restrictions
So, just replacing EU immigration with Indian ones.

Then there's the bigly Trade Deal with Trump - if the UK grovels & keeps grovelling
And includes the NHS and the worst elements of TTIP
That's not taking back control; it's going under Trump's control.

There's no sign that the UK (65 million people) cab negotiate as good deals as an EU (500 million) did.
Especially when they know you're desperate
Abolish "red tape" to help business profits ? That's employment rights, environmental protection etc that you're abolishing

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 22:08

What have ukip/brexit campaigners done for women, assassinated one?

Nationalistische Töne noted in Die Zeite.
funny how it's not in English press Hmm
