Westministenders: Johnson defends his President whilst we try to defend Britain

Theresa and Donald
Sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First come Brexit
Then comes the Ban
Then comes the
Removal of Human Rights
… Damn

(Shamelessly stolen from a protest sign)

A couple of weeks ago people were still asking why we were talking about Trump on a Brexit thread. I think the answer has made itself all together too apparent.

What is happening in the US is not going to stop. It’s not going to get any better any time soon. The situation is grave with suggestions there has been a coup. What happens next is not going to be pretty. American institutions are struggling. The rule of law has been undermined. We are not talking about a developing country. We are talking about the country which has stood for freedom and democracy.

Our leadership looks weak in the face of this. We look like we are not only appeasing but endorsing. For what? A trade deal that he could revoke in 30 days?

We have but one question. How many of our ‘British Values’ will have to be sacrifice for the special relationship?

Make no bones about this: Cosying up to Trump threatens our national security. It threatens our democracy. It ruins what little moral authority we have left. It threatens our ties with Europe who we DO still need to have a relationship even if we are outside the EU. This is not world leadership. This is appeasement. This is cowardly weak and downright desperate.

Let us also not forget ‘Good old Boris’ pretending to be Churchill and calling the EU Nazis and Hitler during the Referendum and on several occasions since. He has now had the bare faced audicity to stand in the House of Commons and call MPs out repeatedly for ‘trivalising the holocaust’ or for making comparisons with the 1930s when they saying they have been told this by survivors of the holocaust. It is SHAMEFUL. I also note how many times Johnson referred to Trump being democratically elected as if this makes all the difference and he can’t possibly be a dictator if elected.

Why do they want to use the parallel themselves and HATE it when its used for things they use? Fascists hate being pointed out as fascists.

What would happen if you put it to the public? You have a choice, The EU or Trump? What would they say. At its most basic this is what Brexit is now. You can not hide it or disguise it any longer.

Get used to this. Be prepared to protest, to keep challenging, to keep calling things as they are. Fatigue might set in, but we need to keep on. This is for the long haul.

Today the a50 Bill starts in parliament. It’s not looking good, as it looks like MPs will completely fail in their DUTY to hold the government to account and will not have the balls to add amendments to the bill.

If it passes without any, get worried. It is not just about the EU.

It never was.

I asked on another thread for Leaver's opinions on tearing up EURATOM, whether they felt it was justified and were they concerned for nuclear safety, and got nothing.

Then later on, unrelated, a snarky post about how Remainers were demanding that Leavers had to be qualified scientists with full policy knowledge about EURATOM otherwise they weren't allowed to vote etc etc Hmm

It's perplexing. People are so keen to tell me this/that/the other opinion on how the EU is responsible for all manner of injustices, and their opinion on how leaving the EU will bring about all manner of glories. Then when I actually ask for a specific opinion on a specific point, it's all "How dare you expect me to have an opinion!" and "How dare you expect me to have a PhD in nuclear physics in order to have a vote!" Confused WTF

Braceybracegirl · 01/02/2017 20:02

I'm so gutted. I knew it would get through of course but still gutted.

Peregrina · 01/02/2017 20:07

I do know about Euratom because my DS works for the Atomic Energy Authority. It came as a complete bolt from the blue. If it goes and buggers up May's deal with the Chinese and Hinkley Point, I will feel some sympathy for those people who won't get work as a result of it, but I won't feel sympathy with May.

Few Leavers have opinions on anything which requires some thought. There was a thread about NI - notable for the absence of Leavers.

lalalonglegs · 01/02/2017 20:08

I wonder how many of the MPs on the select committee hearing opinions on NI post-Brexit, Misti, will vote for A50 anyway. I'm nauseated by these MPs who know this is going to be disastrous but don't seem to care that they're voting to cause this disaster.

Woman
"Tories are going to get so shafted by Banks, so shafted.
Hope they're enjoying their laugh at Labour, because they're voting for their death.
498/ 114
Bastards."

I'm sorry this is probably a dim question but why does this vote today mean Tories get shafted by Banks? Sorry if this has been covered.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 20:13

Same as the labour party.

At last! I have waited years for this.
At last we will be be able to reduce immigration from the EU and make our own laws.
I'm going over to the Brexit Arms to get the champagne out.

It isn't perplexing. The scapegoating has worked, perfectly. The EU is the big bad wolf and immigrants and Europeans are blamed for absolutely everything that is wrong in this country but that was in fact caused by tore policy. It's not facts that count but people's feeeeeelings. people feeeeeel the eu is bad. that's all, they know shit however but never mind.

I believe that today the future of this country has been sealed. Judging by the cuts in education there will be an ever population that is uneducated making it ever more easy for the white upper classes to run this country.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 20:19

@labourwhips
CORRECTION: Labour MPs voted more than 3 to 1 in favour of triggering Article 50. 167 to 47.

grumpypuss · 01/02/2017 20:19

"At last we will be be able to reduce immigration from the EU and make our own laws." Good luck with that btw Wink

lalalonglegs · 01/02/2017 20:19

The guardian blog has a list of MPs that voted against invoking A50, see if your MP is mentioned. My Remain MP in an overwhelmingly Remain constituency is not but no surprise as she was promoted by Theresa May post-referendum. Hilariously Diana Abbott couldn't make it to the vote Hmm.

Braceybracegirl · 01/02/2017 20:21

I've resigned from the Labour party. Feel totally let down.

Kaija · 01/02/2017 20:22

"Strap in, this is going to beat any rollercoaster"

Interesting.

lalalonglegs · 01/02/2017 20:22

I've already resigned or I'd join you, Bracey.

Kaija · 01/02/2017 20:24

I gave up my Labour membership on 24th June.

Anyone going to join me in the Lib Dems?

HashiAsLarry · 01/02/2017 20:24

The only thing that surprised me today was that I ended up praising my local MP for staying true to his cause. He was a leave MP in a leave area but its the only positive thing I felt I could say about this omnishambles

howabout · 01/02/2017 20:27

Will be absolutely astounded if bilateral deal on Euratom is not very easily negotiated given French involvement in Hinkley Point etc.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 20:27

the list of dissenters is on sky...I suppose someone will report on who represented a leaver constituency
traitor hunting on the idiot thread.

grumpypuss · 01/02/2017 20:28

"Anyone going to join me in the Lib Dems?" i joined them last month.

am starting to be grateful for my other EU passport. Time to look into plan B. onward and up.

boredofbrexit · 01/02/2017 20:30

might as well top off the day...tillerson confirmed
Wine do cheer up

Braceybracegirl · 01/02/2017 20:30

I did mean to do it ages ago. I've emailed them and told them why. Doubt I will get a response.

HashiAsLarry · 01/02/2017 20:30

I have joined today Kaija

Peregrina · 01/02/2017 20:31

Will be absolutely astounded if bilateral deal on Euratom is not very easily negotiated given French involvement in Hinkley Point etc.

Why waste time and money negotiating? Why not admit that this was a stupid mistake. I won't be astounded if a deal is not negotiated because we have one of the most stupid appeasing pig-headed Governments I have ever seen.

Bearbehind · 01/02/2017 20:33

bored do you mean to look quite such a fool? Hmm

CeciledeVolanges · 01/02/2017 20:35

I hope the figurative champagne is good - we certainly won't have much literal champagne to go round once we've left.
