It's not exit, it's independence. Alternatively we should call it sovereignty or self rule.

An excellent speech from the PM, exactly what Leavers wanted to hear. I'm happy.

Back to remainers frothing at the mouth, I just thought you would like a little break Grin

Rorty - can you explain what you think the result of all this will be and why it makes you happy.

I only have the energy to reply to one point.

I have to ponder how sovereign we are if we cannot set our own limits and regulations on population movement. We can; or could. EU law explicitly allows us to do just this. Successive governments (and remember what Mrs May's job title as before she became PM?) have just failed to do so.

RortyCrankle · 17/01/2017 16:32

No DoctorDonnaNoble - I stopped answering questions on here about five months ago. It's a pointless waste of time since Remainers don't really want to know what a Leaver thinks - they have tended in the past to be derogatory, abusive and attempted to rip to shreds whatever we said so not being a masochist, I decided to stop answering.

But I'm still happy Grin

SemiPermanent · 17/01/2017 16:34

I'm happy too Rorty!
Cheers Wine

I like TM as PM.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 17/01/2017 16:39

Rorty - well I'm sorry about that. I do actually have a couple of friends who voted Leave. One I can sort of understand why he did. The other makes no sense whatsoever.

Wellthatsit · 17/01/2017 16:40

miss moon, why do you not believe rachel ragged voted Remain? Is it such anathema to uou that someone could vote one way but still recognise another's viewpoint, or accept that insulting those who don't agree wih her view is not on?

The Leave campaign used emotions rather than facts

And the Remain campaign of course only used facts (no emotion at all in all that name calling, no, no, no) some of which facts have already been prooved wrong.

CoteDAzur · 17/01/2017 17:39

Has anyone seen that May declared that UK is leaving EU single market?

Say Bye-Bye to London as the world's #1 financial center. Say Helloooo to all your imports costing far more than they already do with the Pound sweeping the proverbial floor.

Oh but those pesky Eastern Europeans won't be coming no more, so it's all good.

Peregrina · 17/01/2017 18:05

The Remain campaign i.e. Cameron, can't be accused of not using facts because they said precious little, so it was neither truth nor emotion. Cameron's problem was that he couldn't say that the austerity people were suffering was largely due to Tory policies from Thatcher onwards.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 17/01/2017 18:43

Oh yes that cast iron solid remain campaign and all its prophecies - very spot on - all came true....Confused

Leavers Wine a relief.

whatwouldrondo · 17/01/2017 19:01

Downer We haven't left yet. We have not yet hobbled our sources of competitive advantage in global markets, financial services, science and tech by depriving them of their source of competitive advantage. We are only just beginning to see the exodus of the brightest and the best from our knowledge economy and financial services industries. However there are plans in advanced stages and today's speech will have hardened them.

All very well saying that you want an end to FOM and still to give those industries access to the sources of competitive advantage they have from being in the EU but it is very clear 27 countries are not going to dance to May's tune, why would they? They, and indeed all those other economies globally, who would like to exploit the UK's loss of competitive advantage, the rest of the world have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

tropicalwaterdiver · 17/01/2017 19:23

Brexit means breaking up all mechanisms and connections and established last 40 years - financial, trading etc. Putting all political slogans aside, what good could we expect from wrecking established ecosystem? How quickly the government can replace it?

Trading agreements with the rest of the world? It will take time for businesses to find the new clients in the new countries. And I can bet, there is a competition there too and it's not an easy task to enter new market.

It's easy to ruin, but very difficult to build and no way it could be done even in 5 years. It wasn't perfect the way it was, far from it - but it will be much worse, at least, for next 5-10 years.

Tryingtosaveup · 17/01/2017 19:31

YAY, independence at last. It is a bright day indeed.
Waves to infinite 👍👍
Let's lobby for an Independence Day.

Tryingtosaveup · 17/01/2017 19:33

Let's go over to the Brexit Arms and celebrate.

whatwouldrondo · 17/01/2017 19:35

For those who go for reality and complexity free hyperbole I recommend the Brexit arms.....

Peregrina · 17/01/2017 19:42

but it will be much worse, at least, for next 5-10 years.

I have to agree. Think of something like the collapse of Communism - welcomed by many in E Europe, but it took a good 15 years or so for their economies to find alternatives after the collapse of the old system.

tropicalwaterdiver · 17/01/2017 19:57

"The economic Armageddon" doesn't start immediately, it takes time to develop. While it won't be the end of the world, the economic effect will be disastrous.

So, to quote Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, Brace for impact!

MarciaBlaine · 17/01/2017 20:29

We are trading with all these other countries already. I am not sure what people expect. Cheaper NZ lamb and apples and screens from Korea? What will we be selling them in return in greater numbers that will improve on what we currently have?

MarciaBlaine · 17/01/2017 20:40

On the services front, my tech company currently outsources huge amounts of IT services to India. Lots is done off shore but we also have huge numbers of Indian subcontractors working in house. When TM is talking about the brightest and the best (and the cheapest) in the new immigration policy, I foresee some of the UK population not being very happy at all, as we will swap (presumably) unskilled labour from Eastern Europe for highly skilled labour from Asia. Or will we? Because no one has a fucking clue what they want. And I don't believe that all these people who say they want immigration to be fairer and. Not biased to EU actually want more brown faces than white at all.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 17/01/2017 21:01

Given the UK's colonial history, it is excruciatingly embarrassing for the rest of the world to hear us referring to a UK Independence Day.

Completely agree with this, i couldn't figure out why the phrase pissed me off so much

I quite like the military term FUBAR

ojalele · 18/01/2017 05:46

I don't get the whole 'free from the EU' rhetoric.
The UK had huge influence over every decision in the EU, more so than most companies.
Imagine this: you are a senior manager in a company and as a management team you decide on certain rules and behaviours for everyone in the company. Brexit behaviour would be you resigning from your position because you feel you are being oppressed by the management team and deciding to be a rogue employee. You had influence before as part of the team!!!! Now you are just a lone nut!

So call it independence day if you want. The Eu could also call it independence from the UK day... why not, they are now free to make decisions without the UK...
