I think birdy is hysterically(?) trying to push the stereotype that she is most comfortable with - Leavers as 2 dimensional drones who do little more than parrot dismissive one-liners.

Behold her searing wit as she says:

[on NI] "Oh meh, I'm sure the wise minds will sort it out."

[on the banks] "Oh lighten up, this is a pub.
^
everyone hates banks (elites) anyway.^"
^
^

After we all became a bit nicer to each other last night (in the end!) it would be a real shame if birdy is able to derail & get us all frothy again.
Bearing in mind she's made it clear that she is a Remain voter, so she's deliberately trying to rile people with today's posts.

Bearbehind · 08/12/2016 09:32

I see what you're saying mango but surfer started it (yes I realise it sounds like a playground) by saying 'oh well' about banks leaving London.

That was blatantly trying to 'rile' Remainers.

It seems to be a bit of a non-story anyway from what I've read but, posts like that aren't going to help with the tone of further discussion are they?

howabout · 08/12/2016 09:33

Following on from the points I was making about JRM and EU Regulation for anyone interested in a more thoughtful consideration of the Lexit view it is worth having a look at Frank Field's website.

This is an article from just before the Referendum vote.

Am I missing something about last night's parliamentary vote because I can't see why it's being hailed as great news for Leavers.

If I've understood it correctly, the vote was originally on whether the government published a 'plan' but TM tagged on an amendment so voting for the plan also meant voting to invoke A50 by March but the vote was non binding anyway.

So the vote was really for a plan and the options now are

  • no plan is produced
  • the plan doesn't have enough detail
  • parliament don't like the plan
  • parliament do like the plan.

Only the last option would lead to A50 being triggered if the Supreme Court upholds the ruling next month and the chances of A50 happening before March seem incredibly slim.

My goodness some people really like to control what people post on this thread!

I don't want to be too intense otherwise I will be told to leave.

Times had an interesting article on how farmers fear a crisis next summer without sufficient workers.

Well let's import some nice hunky Australian!

The Times - and all the liberal media - for the dartboard please.

surferjet · 08/12/2016 09:53

This thread is turning into a Fawlty Towers episode.

I'll be polly. Bear, you can be Manuel.

MangoMoon · 08/12/2016 09:59

My goodness some people really like to control what people post on this thread!

I couldn't personally give a toss what you post birdy - I was just pointing out your goady-fuckery, lest anyone think its Leavers deliberately trying to wind up Remainers.

It was the flippant NI post that had the potential to cause a lot of trouble tbh.

surferjet · 08/12/2016 10:02

Bearbehind is channeling Basil Fawlty.

Bearbehind · 08/12/2016 10:05

surfer have you been on the spirits already?

I have no idea how you think this thread is like Fawlty Towers or I'm like Basil.

I doubt it's flattering though so another couple of pops at me/ Remainers.

So much for being friendly eh?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 08/12/2016 10:06

Intense bad, flippant bad too. Got it.

InfiniteSheldon · 08/12/2016 10:20

Manuel is dead Sad

surferjet · 08/12/2016 10:29

I think it was when you said 'she started it' -
just reminded me of a FT episode.

Ignore me.

And as Barbara Castle, that great Labour campaigner of yesteryear once argued, outside the EU we will no longer be discriminating in favour of Germans, Spaniards or Belgians and against Indians, Australians and Canadians as is required by our membership of the EU. Britain can become a proper citizen of the whole world again through a colour-blind immigration policy, and not one that serves a “little Europe” and only our closest geographical neighbours

I also wish my Labour colleagues would have more pride in our party’s reforming history and the good sense of the British people. It was Labour governments that introduced the vast majority of the rights that workers enjoy.

From holiday pay to the minimum wage, Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson and Tony Blair didn’t need European bureaucrats to impose them on us. Again and again, Britain’s social rights have been world-beating. I’m absolutely confident that if any Tory government was foolish to attack our fundamental rights they would fail in their ambitions to gain support in the north of England and in the cities

howabout I am a HUGE Fan of Frank Field, he speaks so much sense to me, and has always struck me as a human, kind, sensible, listening MP. It saddened me when he was called Racist on one of these threads Sad and he was called a liar as his ward doesn't have any immigration according to the stats. Interesting article Thanks How.

TheHoneyBadger · 08/12/2016 10:37

oh dear. i see since i last came on here to vent a bit and mark a place of refuge it's been clear that leavers aren't allowed even a tiny corner to be pro brexit in peace.

thanks for people's responses to my comments on cognitive dissonance and stuff - good to know i'm not totally alone in my perception of the times.

as for the continued question about how would we feel about still paying for single market access... personally i don't want it, i want a total out and am willing to go through any period of adjustment and even losses that come with that.

as someone pointed out on here though in that, for me, worst case scenario, there is still the freedom to change our minds later - at least we can do that and aren't tied into 'ever closer' and paying the bail outs for every economy that fails even though we had the sense not to sign up for the euro. so it is still good news compared to being in the EU.

TheHoneyBadger · 08/12/2016 10:40

i'm an alkie and don't drink btw so do ensure that the pub is well stocked with bavaria 0.0% please. i may also have to have a safe word to use when the goady fuckers are driving me to temptation so i can be locked in an alcohol free annex.

Surfer RE BANKS I thought it was only the EU divisions that would be moving not the whole thing? cant see any link to it...but thats what I have read/seen.

surferjet · 08/12/2016 11:16

Tbh I just caught a quick radio report as I was dashing out earlier, I'll try and find a link.

OP posts:
MangoMoon · 08/12/2016 11:17

Yes! Yes! Yes! surfer.

Leave/Remain aside it's nice to have a thread that can muse different points of view or host an argument or two - RTB's threads are not the place for that sort of thing.

It's good to have an informative thread and an informal thread running side by side I think.

WrongTrouser · 08/12/2016 11:21

Bear My understanding is that if an amendement is agreed, then the final vote is on the resolution including any amendments. So if you don't agree with the amendement you vote against the final version of the resolution, as Ken Clarke did. The majority of MPs voted in favour of invoking A50, which I am pleased about as it suggests that most MPs are going to vote in favour of upholding the referendum result.

I might have misunderstood.

WrongTrouser · 08/12/2016 11:22

Mango Thanks for your reply re what you read🙂

MangoMoon · 08/12/2016 11:33

Honey, what would you like as a safeword?

Can I suggest petit-renard?
In memorandum of a nippy little (now banned) poster, who was the living embodiment of Aesop's fable about sour grapes...

howabout · 08/12/2016 11:36

I vote YES cos I am very thick skinned and like a good squabble.
