Xenophobia: Brexit official discourse

jaws5 · 04/10/2016 21:23

Hearing one minister after another at the Tory conference today has made me feel ill: So foreign doctors are welcome UNTIL more British doctors have been trained in a hurry, foreigners will be treated as second class citizens when applying for a job, and EU nationals are one of the "main cards" in Brexit negotiations. I cannot imagine any other country in the world where the official discourse of the governing party would include these statements without it being condemned as xenophobic. Shame on them.

I don't think TM would be saying those things if they weren't popular, but she is appealing to the lowest common denominator. My only hope is that she is so tied up with Brexit, that despite what she says, she will make a mess of it, because she isn't a person of vision, and will go down with the ship, in a manner of speaking.

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:21

Trying is your way of life being threatened by EU citizens?

smallfox2002 · 05/10/2016 22:21

Well they aren't popular with 48 percent of the population, nor apparently we're they popular with the leave others on here who sought to distance themselves.

They aren't popular in the areas with the largest amounts of migration either. They are popular in the areas that don't have much.

This is a vote won on a small.majority, administered by a party with a small majority.

The issues that most perceive around immigration are not really to do.with immigration. If you are happy you are a xenophobe

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 05/10/2016 22:22

Of course trying is xenophobic. What's wrong with immigrants? What's bothering you so much about them?
Apparently it's those funny accents they insist on using when they're in our supermarkets.

Peregrina · 05/10/2016 22:23

Trying you didn't have a proper answer for me, when you said that people born here should get the jobs. It sounded like xenophobia.

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:26

Grin Lord

I wondered today what will happen to the concept of 'equal opportunities' in employment. Will this be scrapped also under Ms May?

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/10/2016 22:27

No - you should be banned because you are spreading low level hate speech. This kind of stuff should be called out for what it is.

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2016 22:27

Just because something is popular does not mean it is right. That is the tyranny of majorities. And society also has a moral obligation to look after guests here well and to look after the interests and protect minorities. Acting in a way that promotes the idea that British born are superior does not do that, and is not responsible governance.

To invoke Godwin, as its appropriate in the context, I'm fairly sure that treating jews in a particular way was pretty popular at the time but it certainly was not the right thing.

This is my point about popularist politics too. Politics should be lead by the people, but that includes the interests of all. Not just the ones who vote for you.

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:29

I think xenophobia is fascinating indeed. Do people 'catch' it?

jaws5 · 05/10/2016 22:30

Trying you might get what you want: an isolated little island populated by ignorant suspicious people. What a terrible future for your children. You've come to this thread in order to hurt people who have contributed to this country for many years and are now worried, people like me, with British/EU families. Should I be deported with or without my children?

OP posts:
smallfox2002 · 05/10/2016 22:30

Jimmy Savile was popular. Don't make what he did right.

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:30

"Just because something is popular does not mean it is right."
Erdogan is pretty popular as is Putin.

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/10/2016 22:31

What is the difference between your post and eg 'I don't like going into a supermarket and being surrounded by black people'? It is simply not acceptable.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 05/10/2016 22:31

My French mother still has a strong accent after 50 years of living here. I'd better warn her to keep away from her regular haunt of Sainsbury's because she's making people uncomfortable. Maybe it would be more acceptable if she were to keep her nasty, foreign mouth shut, though - what do you think?

jaws5 · 05/10/2016 22:32

I actually feel sorry for you

OP posts:
Tryingtosaveup · 05/10/2016 22:32

Peregrina, I don't have to give you a reason for what I think. And I don't intend to.
Different regional accents are a different matter. Many immigrants, whether in supermarkets or otherwise, do not speak English, or speak with a very heavy accent, or do not have a good grasp of English.
Today I asked a supermarket worker where an item was displayed. Her English was so bad that she could not understand what the item was. It was stock cubes. She certainly could not tell me where they were. She had to go and find another worker. And, in case you ask, I speak unaccented, clear English.

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2016 22:34

The stuff Amber Rudd was proposing would violate the Equal Opportunities Act 2010. It would need to be repealed or amended to introduce the idea as law.

Of course this could be done under the 'Great' Repeal Act if deemed Brexit related, potentially without parliamentary debate if May gets her way.

That really does represent a fascist agenda lead by a dictator if we get to that stage.

Fortunately May does not have the power to do this. Yet. It might happen though. Which is why it is really scary.

Tryingtosaveup · 05/10/2016 22:35

Figment, of course it is different. Race and/ or colour are irrelevant here. Stop turning a debate on immigration into racism where non exists.
Why are you so sure I am not Black?

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/10/2016 22:35

Stop digging.

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:37

Disliking people who have accents is the lowest of low.

Am wondering what Charlie Hebdo's take on Ms May and her disciples is. Have there been any cartoons?

GreenandWhite · 05/10/2016 22:38

Trying are black people not ever racist? Are you suggesting that if you were black you couldn't possibly be racist?

smallfox2002 · 05/10/2016 22:39

Poor girl having to deal with a bigot.

Most EU immigrants speak excellent English, oh and you realise non EU immigration is higher than EU?

Why make it an argument about race? Because xenophobia is a prejudice that has equal standing with racism.

jaws5 · 05/10/2016 22:40

Of course, everything they're proposing is currently illegal, for now. trying you have pure "unaccented" English??? That's hilarious, my close (English) friend who's a voice coach could put you right on that! I bet you have pure Arian race? Long family tree with no contamination, going back to the Big Bang too?

OP posts:
smallfox2002 · 05/10/2016 22:42

Oh is Trying going to start discussing indigenous populations?

Tryingtosaveup · 05/10/2016 22:42

I have not come to this thread to hurt anybody. However a debate should accept different opinions.
I have been polite throughout, unlike those of you who are insistent on trying to insult me and belittle my opinions.
I do not believe that one person is superior to any other. Of course we are all equal. But that does not mean that I have to embrace immigration on the scale we have seen in the last 15-20 years.
The Government needs to control our borders whilst ensuring that real labour market shortages are met.
