Dear xxxxxx

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Invoke Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty immediately.”.

Government responded:

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives.

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. The process for leaving the EU and determining our future relationship will be a complex one, so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach. We want to ensure the best possible outcome for Britain and the future UK-EU relationship. As part of this, the government will of course work closely with the devolved administrations to ensure we get the best deal for the UK as a whole. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives, so Article 50 should not be invoked before the end of this year.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 20/08/2016 15:00

I have Irish friends who live in the South but work in the North.

Since they are paid in £s they have already experienced a huge pay cut as a result of the shift in the pound.

They also were not eligible to vote because of where they live. (If as an Irish citizen they had lived in NI they could have voted).

This is a really good example of how the Irish government actually has a role to protect the interests of its citizens and prevent a Brexit that would damage their direct interests they had good reason to believe were assured under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement which the UK government said it would uphold.

There is a very compelling case that the UK government is in breech of protecting that by neglecting to address the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement (which by its nature is an international agreement).

Its not just about the peace process but also one that encompasses trade and free movement of people as part of that agreement.

Peregrina · 20/08/2016 15:01

Indeed Red and Bearbehind. I was shocked by the 'not my circus, not my monkeys' . I have DIL who is Irish. A DIL who thought that a peace deal, (although she thinks is probably not perfect), was an impossibility.

BTW soover I made no comment on how you should vote.

Peregrina · 20/08/2016 15:06

We then had that fool BoJo, the leading light of the Leave Campaign, and now Foreign Secretary, opining that there would be no reason for the relationship with Ireland to change because we had had free movement etc. beforehand. Also conveniently forgetting the situation in N I.

RedToothBrush · 20/08/2016 15:10

Its a well established fact that Boris is an idiot.

I stress this is not an opinion. This is a proven fact.

LEAVERS - update on the 'invoke A50 now' petition. I have the reply.
smallfox2002 · 20/08/2016 15:14

He's no idiot. He uses the buffoon after in the same way gwb did, he's very smart, and that makes him dangerous.

RedToothBrush · 20/08/2016 15:24

I would have made that point before.

He is academically smart but lacks common sense and knowledge when it comes to the crunch.

He has been found wanting on a number of occasions lately.

The water cannon purchase highlights it well; he didn't stop consider whether there might be a problem with actually using them, which was a very legitimate and reasonable question to ask.

It really does show up his short sightedness and inability to examine a problem beyond his own belief.

smallfox2002 · 20/08/2016 15:45

I don't know, the water cannons would have gone through a whole purchasing system, I think he's very calculated.

Kaija · 20/08/2016 16:03

Blimey, that was a bit mild for a deletion, wasn't it? I only said Sooverthis was being trollish for accusing Peregrina of "hoping for bloodshed" in NI. I've seen a hell of a lot worse on here lately. Not least Sooverthis' post itself.

smallfox2002 · 20/08/2016 16:06

What a nasty post from a leaver allowed to stand but one critiquing it deleted? Never!

Kaija · 20/08/2016 16:08

Well if I'm honest it wasn't the most sophisticated critique that's appeared on this thread, but sometimes it gets to a point where you just have to call a spade a spade.

TheElementsSong · 20/08/2016 16:20

What a nasty post from a leaver allowed to stand but one critiquing it deleted? Never!

Not the first time Hmm but perhaps it is to each us to bow down before our new overlords.

BeenThereDoneThatForgotten · 20/08/2016 16:25

Just marking my place as I catch up with the thread...

Bearbehind · 20/08/2016 17:02

The deletion will have been for 'troll hunting' as opposed to nasty comments per se.

I know it's not allowed but it does make you wonder who reports them though doesn't it?

Kaija · 20/08/2016 17:17

It was hardly a hunt. However perhaps it would have been better to say that Sooverthis' post was deliberately inflammatory, disingenuous, hypocritical etc rather than trollish, and I am happy to do so.

Bearbehind · 20/08/2016 17:21

That would have been fine. And true.

Sooverthis · 20/08/2016 17:21

No it wasn't but I was asked to answer questions which I have and in return been the subject of vitriol I am going to leave you to your echo chamber now and time will tell whether or not we voted for the best.

Bearbehind · 20/08/2016 17:26

Before you go soover, are you even going to attempt to justify your not my circus not my monkeys comment or do you genuinely believe that it is not the responsibility of anyone who voted Leave to even begin to have a clue how to execute it.

Peregrina · 20/08/2016 17:35

Yes, I suppose I could have phrased the question a little more tactfully. I could put it to anyone: - if you knew that the break up of a Peace agreement was a strong possibility, which might lead to violence, would you still feel that it was of no concern of yours? I have asked people this in real life, and the answer is oh er, er, never thought of that.....

Excusable for us maybe, but not excusable for the politicians - any of them.

RedToothBrush · 20/08/2016 17:37

You mean you are going to leave a debate of people saying, that the Good Friday Agreement is not something that you can just ignore merely because the direction of the conversation doesn't fit in with circuses and monkeys you want to talk about.

Mind those black pots and kettles whilst you find your way back to your own echo chamber.

I think the point about wilful ignorance is only strengthened rather than refuted by leaving instead of trying to understand the magnitude and scale of the task and problem in hand.

smallfox2002 · 20/08/2016 17:51

It doesn't matter. Soover has outlined her reasons for voting leave, as has Cocory, it doesn't matter if actually their reasons don't stand up to scrutiny, their form of politics is winning the day.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 20/08/2016 18:05

@Bearbehind

The deletion will have been for 'troll hunting' as opposed to nasty comments per se.

I know it's not allowed but it does make you wonder who reports them though doesn't it?

A reminder that we urge all members to report posts which breach our guidelines.

We also ask people not to troll hunt.

Thanks so much

Bearbehind · 20/08/2016 18:14

Well that's me told isn't it.

I do find it odd that my post was clearly reported by readers of this thread.

It's all a bit childish IMO kaija shouldn't have used the word 'troll' and if she'd used any other word/ phrase the post wouldn't have been deleted. It wasn't troll hunting, it was just a poor choice of word.

This is adults discussing a really serious topic and I have an image of a child saying 'omm, I'm telling on you' whilst pointing their finger in the air.

Corcory · 20/08/2016 18:28

I think it was Soover who said that Bear not the Leave Campaign! So no need to get your nickers in quite such a twist!
I am Scottish and live in Scotland but voted leave. 40% of us did. I really don't think that NS will get her 2nd referendum and if she did I don't think she will win considering the unlikelihood of Scotland getting into the EU or having any sort of guarantee before Brexit. With regard to N.I. I really don't know enough about the GFA to comment.

Bearbehind · 20/08/2016 18:31

I think it was Soover who said that Bear not the Leave Campaign! So no need to get your nickers in quite such a twist!

eh? I know it was soover which is why I said are you going to justify your comment.

Kaija · 20/08/2016 18:32

Apologies for using the word trollish.

Consider my post rephrased.
