Brexit- still gutted by result

Now on holiday in France. Handing over our EU passports was bad😰

Driving through France. Lots of the French Tricolour flag being flown alongside EU flag. That made me feel gutted too.

I just don't seem to be able to rally about it😟. I feel very keenly that we have lost that sense of unity and support.

Snivelling in a French gite atm☹️

We could save a lot of money: have a general election, one party wins and forms a government; send all the other MPs home because they "lost".

No need to pay them salaries or expenses.

After all, they need to accept the will of the electorate.

Result Grin

If the Brexit arguments were so weak, how come the clever, educated, elegant and refined remain campaign was completely unable to make their (our) case?

Perhap "we are clever, you are dirty and working class and smell of poo " wasn't a winning strategy?

fuckindosomething · 24/07/2016 17:29

Snivelling in a French gite atm

Says it all really . Hmm

If you were really in touch (down with the people/Jermey Corbyn style ) you wouldn't 'feel sad'.
You would feel grateful that you can afford to go abroad and stay in a fucking gite in the first place.
Most people in your 'Home Country' can't afford a fucking holiday abroad. They can't afford to go on holiday at all.

And that's why they voted leave.

StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2016 17:31

" Modalverb1

We don't have to accept it and move on. TM hasn't triggered A50 yet so there's time to make our feelings known and hope we can stay in the EU. That's democracy.
"

Wasn't the referendum democracy? Didn't that let people's feelings be known?

StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2016 17:33

Apologies x post I see my point has been made.
and can people not start with the "oh this again?" Comments please? We're not talking about big brother. This stuff matters and deserves to be talked about.

JassyRadlett · 24/07/2016 17:33

That's something you usually hear primary school age children saying.

That is one of the most bizarre things I've read on MN, and I've been here a while.

Experiencing sadness is something only children experience? Bloody hell.

Interesting comment about Greek people thinking we have taken leave of our senses. We've spent a lot of time in Greece and have found quite the opposite; hostility towards the EU and in particular Germany has been almost palpable at times. Some Greeks told us they consider what is happening to them a 3rd world war.

fuckindosomething · 24/07/2016 17:34

Snivelling in a French gite atm (because we left the EU)

New Oxford Dictionary definition of a Champagne Socialist?

Peregrina · 24/07/2016 17:35

And that's why they voted leave.

Which of course was entirely the fault of the EU, and not Maggie Thatcher smashing industry, or Cameron and his chums favouring their wealthy pals. Pals who are still wealthy and will do OK for themselves whatever happens.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 24/07/2016 17:36

How do you think Kiwis and Aussies felt at being dumped when the UK joined the EEC? (Possibly not helpful I know, but I'm maybe a wee bit bitter at the crap I've had to go through to live here)

fuckindosomething · 24/07/2016 17:36

I have lots of Greek friends. I could say the majority, but I will say ALL, hate the EU and are watching developments (Brexit) closely.

BuggersMuddle · 24/07/2016 17:39

You don't have to be a socialist (Champagne or otherwise) to think that Brexit is a monumentally stupid move for the UK fuckindosomething.

CuboidalSlipshoddy · 24/07/2016 17:39

peregrina a8 immigration hurt low paid workers. We did nothing to mitigate that. Communities that were already damaged by the forces you outline were yet further damaged. Anyone debating this was dismissed as racist. We ignored the problems, did nothing about it, and the concern metastasised. Bad politics. Bad campaigning.

Doesn't matter.
Cause and Consequence.

People were angry.
Government didn't listen.
Consequence.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 24/07/2016 17:39

How charming of you Fuckin

I work in education so hardly overpaid. What's wrong with being sad? It is the perfect word to sum up the overriding and long term emotion about this fuck up.

I didn't post to be insulted, so l'm off to enjoy my hard earned holiday, paid for by my hugely over inflated salary from teaching 🤔

On the contrary.
I think the EU will go tits up, very soon.
We've basically deserted a sinking ship.
UK was one of a few countries that were main contributors and what could be classed as 'supporting' structures of the EU, supporting the poorer members.
One of the main three 'supports' has gone.

Think of the whole thing as a Three Legged Stool.
One of the main three 'supports' has gone.
Already, there is instability in Germany, not a good sign.
It's a House of Cards, waiting to topple.

Only true in part, because some of the high votes for Leave were in areas where there was little immigration.

We ignored the problems, did nothing about it, and the concern metastasised. Bad politics. Bad campaigning.

Agreed. Are we going to do anything about it now? Theresa May made noises; is she going to be able to actually carry out improvements?

callherwillow · 24/07/2016 17:50

Formerly, I think, to hopefully give a measured approach, that it's natural to feel a sense of sadness at an end of an era. I always feel similar myself with moving house. Even if I'm moving somewhere more suitable, bigger, better, there's a definite sense of something ending, which isn't always comfortable.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some sadness about leaving the EU. But it was very much like ending a relationship that wasn't all bad, but not all good either - from my personal perspective.

However, that doesn't seem to be the perspective of your post: your post appears to be 'feeling sad' at the stupidity of Leave voters, and thinly disguised as sadness so we can marvel at your sensitivity and depth of your feelings.

To paraphrase a much loved song from primary days, if we could take you by the hand and lead you through the streets away from London of the North, we might show you something to make you change your mind Wink

fuckindosomething · 24/07/2016 17:50

yes, the things that are said to you in a holiday resort will be completely different to what would be said to you otherwise

callherwillow · 24/07/2016 17:52

There might have been little immigration, but that doesn't mean people were living in a bubble and couldn't see that high levels of immigration to the country as a whole had impacted on the standard of living of those at the bottom. No matter what people claim, Leave voters weren't all thick. They can read, they can see, they have social media.

Just recently seen this article and although only hypothetical made me feel quite depressed about the way current affairs appear to be heading:
