Brexit

A thread for Leave voters to list the positives of leaving the EU

Seeing as the previous thread is nearly full and no one on it has given us a single tangible positive that we can expect from leaving the EU as opposed to staying I thought I'd start a shiny new thread with a thousand opportunities.

Ooh, I'm drinking a fairly decent pinot blush. EU Italian Grin Cheers my dear Wine

smallfox2002 · 21/07/2016 20:03

I went to the pub too, hic, but us norf London elitists only go to trendy bars don't you know.

Bearbehind · 21/07/2016 20:06

I think I need to drown my sorrows too.

It's incomprehensible that we are where we are on the back of such flimsy trains of thought.

Wine cheers

Wine Cheers bear.

Why would we want to trade with Aus, China, US etc rather than in the single market with the EU, our neighbours, which has boosted our economy. WHY??

And if anyone says unelected bureaucrats in the EU, you can't have a Wine

Oh and I tried watching Brexit the Movie, and could sniff out the lies and propaganda on it within minutes. My mistake thinking everyone would too.

'All the others that the EU have with other countries can be copied over.'

We don't get to dictate the terms of the trade deals. Those other countries know we are in a weak position and they'll want to negotiate something better. For them, probably not for us.

smallfox2002 · 21/07/2016 20:21

Did you see John Oliver completely debunk Brexit the movie? It was fucking hilarious.

Much like the repeated arguments of Brexiteers on here.

Ok, so we are excluded form the free trade agreement known as NAFTA (no shit sherlock, we are not in North America)
we are excluded from the EATS free trade agreement (last time I looked, the UK was not in East Africa)

Free trade agreements with China and Japan - do please list the countries which have tariff free imports to those countries

Trade deals work well when they are both ways
what does the UK want to export to Australia and New Zealand that it does not already through the EU trade deals ?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 21/07/2016 20:31

I bloody love John Oliver, smallfox. Yes - it's v v good.

His videos pretty much sum up all my feelings on the whole EU referendum.

Which is why I'm drinking Wine (in the virtual pub with Antique) right now.

Corcory · 21/07/2016 20:35

Talkin - the EU doesn't have a free trade deal with Australia or New Zealand.
We have no interest in being part of other people's free trade deals we want our own.

Bearbehind · 21/07/2016 20:37

Why would we have to renegotiate with 27 separate countries Bear? Are you actually David Davis??

Err, because we wouldn't have EU agreements with them so we'd need individual agreements for each country.

Why do you think this isn't the case?

I don't think you've debunked leave reasons with facts at all. You've highlighted that most reasons are not black and white!

Please give me examples

FACT- The EU has had its accounts signed off by its auditors - granted it is a bit wasteful but so is the NHS.

FACT- austerity isn't just going away - it isn't just an EU policy.

FACT- the UK were making tampons zero rated items regardless of leaving or staying in the EU.

Who made the remark about making deals with 27 other countries?

I'm cringing for them, for their lack of understanding.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 21/07/2016 20:40

Of course,

God Almighty. What did we do??

No wonder we're all in the pub.

TaIkinPeace · 21/07/2016 20:41

corcory
so who DOES have free trade deals with Aus and NZ ?
Please define what the UK missed out on by being in the EU

Err... Bear did smallfox, your fellow remainer is as misinformed as our Minister for Brexit

I'm pretty sure smallfox was commenting on the fact someone thought we wouldn't need to renegotiate with 27 other countries. Hmm

Why would we be able to carry on with all the deals we had before, with absolutely no changes, if we were outside of the EU?

OP posts:
UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 21/07/2016 21:06

We want to be in the single market, if we know what's good for us. We already have free trade with 27 other countries - I'm pretty sure that's what every remainer was saying.

smallfox2002 · 21/07/2016 21:12

Maki, your misuse of the £700m error is as bad as Bear's is.

Material error doesn't mean fraud and the vast majority of that £700m is material error. For example it can mean " poor value for money" and mean that recipient nations don't use the money on projects that have produced good value. Did you know that on 28 April 2016, the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee called on the UK government to improve how it spends EU funds? If some of these funds were spent in a poor way (and they have been) they count as part of the £700m .

Like the tampon tax, the fact that you are taking quite a complex issue and painting it as simple fraud (of which of course there is going to be some, but show me an organisation that large that doesn't have some) is yet another point against leavers. You clutch at straws and anything you think might back your point you grab, this point, like many others is over simplified and blown out of proportion.

Corcory · 21/07/2016 21:12

Talkin - Australia has loads of free trade deals with the likes of USA. and China.
Unlike Australia who has had a free trade deal with the USA for over 10 years the EU doesn't - that's how we are missing out.

I#ll google New Zealand in a min. if you like but I know they have lots too and are very good at it that's why they have offered to help us with all their expertise.

Bearbehind · 21/07/2016 21:13

maki even your link makes it clear the spending in question wasn't necessarily wasteful, just not in line with its own rules.

Please provide an assessment of the U.K's proportional split of this 'waste' versus the cost of renegotiating every trade deal with the EU in order to prove 'better the devil you know' wasn't a better option.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 21/07/2016 21:15

Yay, if I'm wrong and we don't need new deals for every EU country then I've found my elusive positive.

smallfox, please explain why I'm an arse Blush

Links please
I get the Economist every week. It it absolutely clear that China has free trade deals with absolutely Nobody
the USA has a limited Free trade deal with the EU that will be superceded by TTIP and the TPP has not yet come in to law.

Links please to the ratification of these amazing Free Trade deals that the UK misses out on .....

smallfox2002 · 21/07/2016 21:19

Sorry 7bn...

Plus on top of that the link which you have put it says the same thing I did!

It accounts to 4.4% of the EU annual budget. Its also down to the member states who control the money, not the EU.

And let me repeat just in case, material error does not equate to fraud!
