To feel really positive about leaving the EU

I know there has been lots of fear stories but in a few weeks since the vote we have managed to get a new PM who seems more than capable and we are now in control of our destiny without being ruled by an unelected and unaccountable EU. The EU has for a long time been a basket case and has condemned much of the youth of Southern Europe to decades of unemployment, it's a relief to be out. Do remember we are now free to negotiate our own trade deals with the rest of the world and most countries are not in the EU and seem to do well. There have been so many fear stories which have been peddled by self interest. I wonder in 5 years time how many remainers will be asking to rejoin the EU!!

Beat behind:

One positive thing (out of many): out of the CAP.

BertrandRussell · 20/07/2016 12:47

Why is coming out of the CAP a good thing?

Kaija · 20/07/2016 12:49

Whatever legitimate concerns there may be about the CAP, I'm not at all sure that jeopardising food security in a time of accelerating climate change is an unalloyed good.

Badders123 · 20/07/2016 12:57

Yep
And they included farage
Where is he, btw?
Prob enjoying his huge Mep salary...

prettybird · 20/07/2016 13:07

I suppose you could argue that the fall in the value of the pound will mean that our farmers will be able to sell more overseas.

The fact that it will cost more to import the extra food that we need as we're not self-sufficient is just something we'll have to thole Hmm

larrygrylls · 20/07/2016 13:07

Kaija,

Jeopardising food security?? Now I have heard it all. Food security against what? We have way too much food. Look around you at food waste and obesity.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 20/07/2016 13:18

Good grief Larry Hmm

Corcory · 20/07/2016 13:23

I'll name one benefit of leaving the EU that is very important to me and that is that we will regain control of our fishing waters. Will be able to regulate and fish them ourselves without having to share them with huge factory ships from Spain etc.

lljkk · 20/07/2016 13:25

I dunno what Kaija meant, but globally, food security is a significant concern.
Weakening EU food production could mean we in rich countries put pressure on places with unhelpful weather to try to grow more food, and we import more food from countries with fragile economies (& weather). The years their crops fail, we will have money to buy food where-ever else. But the poor countries would be competing with us for the limitd food... it's unethical for our larger purchasing power to price poorer people out of being able to buy enough food.

I'm not an expert, but I suspect basically the CAP rather than merely protect our own farmers, may also end up protecting environments & agriculture elsewhere, too. Because food is grown in a diversity of environments, the risk of crop failure gets spread & if prices are kept a little artificially high globally this helps weaker agricultural economies more than it does us in the service economies.

whatwouldrondo · 20/07/2016 13:30

Corcory You do know that it is the government who allocate the fishing quotas. The EU regulations are meant to ensure that respects small local fisherman and communities but instead two thirds have gone to just three large firms. So if that was the basis of your vote, you are someone else who was aiming at the wrong target energydesk.greenpeace.org/2016/05/15/investigation-big-fish-quota-barons-squeeze-out-small-scale-fishermen/

lljkk · 20/07/2016 13:31

@Cocory: It is said that the UK sold off our fishing quotas to Spanish & Dutch, long ago, so if a UK fisheries benefit exists, it won't be obtainable for at least another 20 yrs. How to deal with the state of UK fishing quotas is going to be a major headache in the Brexit negotiations.

Worldwide, food wastage is a huge problem - from not being harvested and rotting in the fields to poor and corrupt distribution chains leading to it rotting in warehouses.

It's much, much more complex people wasting food domestically.

whatwouldrondo · 20/07/2016 13:44

Iijkk's link is from 1996, and my link from May so if this issue has not been resolved in 20 years by a government that had the powers but preferred to keep taking the money and blame the EU I think it gives us an indication on how all the other "benefits" of leaving the EU are going to be delivered by this same government......

Surferjet · 20/07/2016 13:45

My number one reason for voting leave was uncontrolled immigration, & in particular our security.

Former work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith, who was in favour of Brexit, said we were leaving the "door open" to terrorist attacks by remaining in the EU. "This open border does not allow us to check and control people," he said

I have absolutely nothing against immigration, I don't care where you're from, what religion you are or anything like that, all I want is more control over our borders & tighter security, basically, to have a bit more of an idea as to who we're letting in.
I believe IDS in what he said, why shouldn't I? he's a politician of many years experience & should know what the bloody hell he's talking about - if he doesn't, & it's all lies, then who do we believe? Only labour politicians? ( although many of those agree IDS ) the SNP? Liberals? No one?
Because if we trust not a single politician then we may as well give up.

Valentine2 · 20/07/2016 13:51

larry
I agree we waste a LOT of food. But do you think

  1. You can change the food wasting habits of our nation in the time frame of BREXIT? And even if you do manage that,
  2. do you have any kind of data showing us that we will be able to make up for it? For example, at least 30-40% of our food requirements must be met by this stop-the-waste proposal. Which means that you believe we are wasting/overeating that much of our food nationally??!! Shock
Valentine2 · 20/07/2016 13:53

surferjet
You bought immigration control agenda of IDS? I won't buy a sack of potatoes from that leech.

EverythingWillBeFine · 20/07/2016 13:53

I do not trust one single politicians in the uk. No. And yes it is a major issue.
I and I believe the system with two parties (3with the lib dem) can not represent the myriad of PoV present in the population. Hence the major issues experienced both the Tories and labour where the members and the MPs are not in sync (or diffetent tendencies in the same party etc etc)

Peregrina · 20/07/2016 13:54

We in fact, not being part of the Schengen agreement, do not have an open border. This is why there is a camp in Calais.

Admittedly considerably more Poles came than were expected, but that can be put down to Tony Blair's policies. He chose not to apply restrictions which he could have done.

Recent terrorism (e.g. 7/7 bombings) has been home grown. Earlier terrorism was IRA bombings and although I sincerely hope this does not come back, the peace process between the Republic and NI has now potentially been severely compromised by the Brexit vote.

BertrandRussell · 20/07/2016 13:56

surfer jet- if we have uncontrolled immigration, why are all those people in camps in Calais?

DoinItFine · 20/07/2016 13:57

the peace process between the Republic and NI

And Britain.

For my generation's point of view (post 2008 recession workforce), I think there is a serious Iack of understanding/intuition among the pre-recession generation: you can tweak and pin and shake the system and it won't come crashing down because we are too big to fail and have been great etc. I don't blame you guys for that. I would have been like that too probably. But I think it has caused a massive overconfidence in our nation as such. We need absolute hard work to cover what was lost in 2008. And without actually having left yet, BREXIT has caused loss of how much? £2 trillions across the whole world!! Do any leave voters believe the politicians like IDS or Cameron or BoJo will help cover it? No matter how much he hates EU, Farage will always withdraw his EU salary and pension and benefits. We will pay the price. You won't see it in going out of your bank account. But you will see it in the form of prices going up. Of everything. The area where I live, in the last two months the prices of 2 bed flat's have gone up by £30k already! You have any idea who is buying it?

Surferjet · 20/07/2016 14:02

It's not just about Calais BertrandRussell - people enter this country other than clinging onto a Lorry.
& there really is no point discussing this because you'll dismiss any concerns I have as nonsense.

whatwouldrondo · 20/07/2016 14:03

Surferjet Every single terrorist incident on British soil was committed by British nationals, and non were committed by EU nationals coming here to work, unless you count the IRA bombings. And if a terrorist wants to come here and perpetrate an atrocity he can get on a plane and come here on a tourist visa. In fact that is what the vast majority of immigrants do, the poor souls on the French coast are the ones who couldn't afford the plane fare or had lost their papers. We have control of our borders, the only additional ones you could introduce would be a Trump style ban on all Muslims coming into the country, and nobody is thankfully proposing that not even IDS. And no I don't trust a word he or any other politicians says. Maybe because I work in marketing and understand how spin works, and that was exactly what this was, scaremongering spin.

Valentine2 · 20/07/2016 14:04

One more legacy of Fucking Tony Bliar is the refugee crisis. All the fuckwit MPs are complicit too who voted for Iraq war. I am extremely happy to see the back of Eagle. She votes war consistently.
All these arse holes were thinking that if you go burn other people's homes in a global village, you will still come out fine and unscathed.
I sooooo wanna see him behind bars.
