Should we invoke article 50 immediately & begin our 2 year Brexit negotiation?

OP posts:
Teaguzzler · 02/07/2016 17:20

Of course not! We don't have a prime minister at the moment and there appears to be no exit plan.

Namehanger · 02/07/2016 17:21

Oh such fun. Even the rabid Brexiter politicians don't want to do that.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 02/07/2016 17:22

No. we need to know exactly what we're negotiating for before we start negotiating.

It'd also be helpful to have someone in charge and an effective opposition.

Wadingthroughsoup · 02/07/2016 17:23

I think that is jumping the gun, big time.

ShortcutButtons · 02/07/2016 17:24

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Good one OP.

whydidhesaythat · 02/07/2016 17:58

It is what the people voted for

Lico · 02/07/2016 18:10

Don't you need an Act of Parliament first?

whydidhesaythat · 02/07/2016 18:11

I think so

No one told them that in the campaign

JasperDamerel · 02/07/2016 18:12

It would be useful to have an actual functioning government to arrange the negotiations before the countdown starts.

whydidhesaythat · 02/07/2016 18:13

I think if I was DC I would have invoked then resigned

ShortcutButtons · 02/07/2016 18:15

The people voted to cut immigration and put more money into the NHS. They did not vote for the break up of the Union, a finished economy, renewed tensions in Northtern Ireland. Maybe if the people had been told the truth and had still voted to Leave, maybe then a quick trigger would be right, but why trigger something that can't deliver what was promised?

throwingpebbles · 02/07/2016 18:16

Lol. With no clear leadership to get a deal through? We're going to be shafted in any Brexit negotiations regardless, but the idea of starting them with no plan or leadership is ludicrous

SnowBells · 02/07/2016 18:17

If people voted for sinking the British isles, would you do it?

Genuine question.

Joysmum · 02/07/2016 18:20

Fucking hell NO NO NO!!!

We'll only have 2 years post article 50 to negotiate on the myriad of thousands of issues covered by EU membership.

How can we negotiate on those now when we haven't had the debate to reach a majority decision about what we want to negotiate for and what compromises we are prepared to make to secure or tick list.

CremeBrulee · 02/07/2016 18:24

NO NO NO

Is that clear enough?

hmcAsWas · 02/07/2016 18:26

Doesn't seem quite as popular as the 2nd referendum petition

SugarPlumTree · 02/07/2016 18:26

I personally find the idea of doing nothing until we have a functioning Governmemt and Opposition party a much more appealing idea.

tilder · 02/07/2016 18:29

I've seen some ridiculous things posted regarding Brexit. This is perhaps the most naive yet.

We will need every day of those 2 years to try and negotiate something vaguely beneficial to the uk. We really need to have an idea of what we are negotiating for before we start.

Would have been nice to have known what we would negotiate for before we all voted, but hey.

And yes. A functioning parliament would probably help too. Hopefully with a viable opposition party.

But please, don't let that stop us rampaging ahead. We're so great we will get everything we want with no conditions, no negotiation required!Hmm

Allium40 · 02/07/2016 18:30

Nice to see lots of common sense responses on here which I presume come from all over the UK!

whydidhesaythat · 02/07/2016 18:42

I think we should have done it on day1
it would have concentrated minds

( unless we can somehow never do it at all)

SnowBells · 02/07/2016 18:50

whydidhesaythat

You've got to be kidding. You are one of those people who would sink the British isles. Read up on the negotiation for the free-trade agreement between Canada and the EU... and see how long that has been going on for.

Alfieisnoisy · 02/07/2016 18:53

Hell no, we need a plan first and more crucially a Govt that knows what it is doing. This lot (and the main opposition) are not inspiring confidence at the moment.

Joysmum · 02/07/2016 18:57

So glad to see the general consensus is to wait...and I presume that's from a mix of remain and leave voters.

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/07/2016 18:57

Hahaha. Kind of demonstrates how well you understand what you voted for if you think this is something we should just plunge into without having any leader or even a vague plan in place. Literally no one with a clue wants to invoke this now, even the politicians in favour of Brexit. Why on earth would you want to be so stupid, OP?
