GingerIvy when you look at what the Michel Sapin said, it doesn't actually mean anything... he didn't say that freedom of movement was on the table for Single Market access. He just said that all the options would be looked at. For instance if Britain wants to have little to no access to the Single Market, then yes sure, it doesn't need to agree to freedom of movement. I think everybody already knows it's going to be a question of balance - how much access to the Single Market is Britain ready to give up, in exchange for what controls on immigration. It's not going to be all or nothing.

I hadn't thought of the "two women for the two main parties" angle, but I rather like it!

With regards to the Singapore banks suspending lending for investment in London property - it is not a good thing, in that it indicates a drop in confidence. The London property market was a safe haven investment for rich Chinese (and Russian, and Middle East etc) investors. This is no longer the case as there are too many risks now, they have highlighted FX and political. Not a surprising statement, really. I would not look to invest in London buy-to-let at the moment either (if I had the money that is).
One bank withdrawing would not cause a crash but again, it is a longer term confidence thing which tends to self-perpetuate on the way up and on the way down. It is not surprising that UK homebuilders stocks were the worst affected after the results came out.

With regards to the Telegraph article, I think a lot of it makes sense, yet I do not see this as a good thing either. The UK will drag the rest of the EU down with it if not treated well - this is our bargaining position?

And SNP - Nicola Sturgeon
Scottish Cons - Ruth Davidson
Greens - Natalie Bennett
Plaid - Leanne Wood

Its fair to say that NI has some catching up to do on this front....

You make it sound like we have a choice in the matter ourselves now, and that the damage to confidence hasn't already been done.

I personally think we are simply just on borrowed time.

OOOOOOOOOO oooooooo

GOVE IS GOING IT ALONE FOR THE PM JOB.
He's shafting Johnson.

(and clearly with the support of the right wing press)

Just announced.

And then it goes back to "this hurts the UK more than it hurts the EU"

Sure, a very bad deal would have some serious effects on the EU economy. But it would destroy the UK economy.

Chalalala · 30/06/2016 09:09

Oh my god!!!

What a slimy back-stabbing toad.

MaterofDragons · 30/06/2016 09:11

Just seen the Gove news...Sarah Vine email seems to have done the job!

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 09:15

Michael Gove has announced that he is standing for the Conservative leadership. Here is his statement:

The British people voted for change last Thursday. They sent us a clear instruction that they want Britain to leave the European Union and end the supremacy of EU law. They told us to restore democratic control of immigration policy and to spend their money on national priorities such as health, education and science instead of giving it to Brussels. They rejected politics as usual and government as usual. They want and need a new approach to running this country.

There are huge challenges ahead for this country but also huge opportunities. We can make this country stronger and fairer. We have a unique chance to heal divisions, give everyone a stake in the future and set an example as the most creative, innovative and progressive country in the world.

If we are to make the most of the opportunities ahead we need a bold break with the past.

I have repeatedly said that I do not want to be Prime Minister. That has always been my view. But events since last Thursday have weighed heavily with me.

I respect and admire all the candidates running for the leadership. In particular, I wanted to help build a team behind Boris Johnson so that a politician who argued for leaving the European Union could lead us to a better future.

But I have come, reluctantly, to the conclusion that Boris cannot provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead.

I have, therefore, decided to put my name forward for the leadership. I want there to be an open and positive debate about the path the country will now take. Whatever the verdict of that debate I will respect it. In the next few days I will lay out my plan for the United Kingdom which I hope can provide unity and change.

Well I never. I never saw that one coming.... did you? Hmm

The reluctant leader my arse.

(Actually you don't think this is also a way to get May out of the race, in a Gove v Johnson win - win tactic? From what I see, May is regarded as the respected choice and this might split her vote somehow. Just pondering)

Hamishandthefoxes · 30/06/2016 09:17

I think that again destroys Boris! How can he come back from last Friday and then that!?

Now just to seriously how for Teresa...

NameChanger22 · 30/06/2016 09:18

I wrote to my local MP asking for what amounts to a progressive alliance of all left-wing parties as a united remain party. It seems the Green Party had the same idea as me. Realistically it's the only way we can save the UK. I hope it works. I hope those parties can put aside their minor differences and egos and unite for the good of everyone. It might be a pipe dream right now, but it is possibly our only chance. If you think there is a tiny chance it might work please write to your MP.

Globetrotter100 · 30/06/2016 09:18

OMG indeed

Interesting idea, and Gove will definitely steal support from May. But I don't know about a joint secret anti-May move, because the leaked email suggested some genuine distrust between Gove and Johnson

The worst bit about this is that I genuinely cannot decide which of them I want least as PM. Very bad case of "pick your poison" Sad

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 09:22

Andrea 'Your Mum' Leadsom also standing.

Ok well that solves my dilemma. She's definitely the one I want least.

What is is about Leavers and the patronising "mum" thing, seriously?

HalsallRedux · 30/06/2016 09:28

Christ.

(Have been clinging to the thread as if it were a life-raft. It beggars belief that this bunch of utter fuckwits is the best we can hope for to lead this country. We are indeed dooooooooomed

SugarPlumTree · 30/06/2016 09:28

There probably is generally mistrust between Johnson and Gove. Gove gas played a blinder IMO.

Was happy to stand back and let Johnson do it. Vine article made it clear that never expected Cameron to resign but shored up his belief in better out then in.

Next minute 'leaked' email portrays Johnson as perceived as untrustworthy by big players and Gove. Then Give steps forward as candidate.

Stepping back at the beginning after the result put all the focus on Johnson and took a lot if thr heat off him. Then having portrayed him as he clearly is, Gove the man of principles (vomit ) stands up to be counted.

thecatfromjapan · 30/06/2016 09:28

LOL 'Can't decide which I want least'!

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 09:31

May does look to be lining up either Gove or Johnson for Minister of All Things Brexit if she gets it.

I don't like her. As in I think she's a horrorbag who destroys civil liberties and human rights which I am passionate about.

BUT

She doesn't take shit, she is a strong hand and she seems to be not to keen on the schoolboys.

I do think she is the best of a bad bunch, and maybe we need another 'Iron Lady' to stand up to Russia (and Europe) right now?

clutches straws

I am declaring for Team May I think....

Confused

Never mind Muse and Dad's Army, I've still got The Funboy Three's "The Lunatics Are Taking Over The Asylum" stuck in my head (for a very good reason).

Hamishandthefoxes · 30/06/2016 09:33

What an embarrassment... Of riches, obviously.

DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 09:33

Our first minister is a woman and leader of our biggest party is a woman.

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 09:35

Nick Robinson @bbcnickrobinson
Robinson's rule of leadership elections - if someone would die happy if they stopped you then you're in trouble. Healey, Hessa, Portillo ...

Yes Mr Johnson. You look to have been outmanoeuvred.

Btw, May was being touted as the 'anti-Johnson' or 'anyone but Boris' candidate.

Then look how Gove has phrased it too. He's going for that ticket too.
