Can we laugh or cry yet?

Are you still sane?

Will this insanity ever end?

I hope that's dog shit, Mitzy.

RebeccaNoodles · 30/06/2016 20:05

That's great! Good on Gove for remembering there's something called Scotland. He didn't manage Northern Ireland but you can't have everything (unless you're Boris)

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 20:05

Lets see what Osbourne's next move is...

.... oh whether he keeps his cards close to his chest.

Oh wow Red, the knives are most definitely out! The Tories truly are a nest of vipers that seem to enjoy turning their venom on one another.

Theresa May is by far the public's preferred candidate to be the country's next Prime Minister, a Sky Data Snap Poll reveals.

Of the candidates to become the new Conservative leader and Prime Minister following David Cameron's resignation, 47% of people interviewed said Mrs May would be their first choice.

The other candidates lagged far behind, with Michael Gove on 9%, Stephen Crabb on 7% and both Andrea Leadsom and Liam Fox on 4%.

Three in ten (29%) answered 'don’t know'.

It is worth bearing in mind that early polls are not good indicators of success in party leadership elections - the early favourite rarely wins Conservative party leadership contests.

Noting of course that Sky is Murdoch.

The spins starts

The Tory membership might well punish Gove for pulling those sneaky moves on Johnson. They may decide it makes him untrustworthy.

Galdos · 30/06/2016 20:14

Did BoJo accept Gove's amendments to the draft article??

The excitement is all too much and I am looking forward to relaxing with a boxed set of something anodyne like House of Cards or Game of Thrones.

Brilliant thread, so informative and helpful, and without the biliousness seeping out of pretty much every other thread/discussion board I have seen.

Bearbehind · 30/06/2016 20:15

Im convinced Johnson and Gove are in this together.

It's all just too convienient.

That email discredits Gove so he won't win the leadership contest (they can't risk actually winning again) and both of them come out of this without having to do the hard shit.

Leave May to fail now and sail in in a few years and rescue the party.

Hamishandthefoxes · 30/06/2016 20:16

Thank you. I love these threads. I love the fact there are so many other people as gobsmacked as I am at what is going on and prepared to call the idiocy what it is - rather than either pretend it's not happening or that we can have another referendum and everything will be dandy.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2016 20:23

Caitlin Moran tweeted this today and it rings so true 'I've never seen the mechanisms of politics so visible before. This is, to coin a phrase, politics with its guts and arse hanging out.'

Globetrotter100 · 30/06/2016 20:25

It's like Eastenders but more twisty plot lines and set in Westminster....

It's Westenders Grin

Fleurdelise · 30/06/2016 20:25

Thank you for this thread and the slap Gove game, I feel like I got closure. Grin

On the subject on delusional people my PIL (voted leave) told my DH today the economy is doing just fine, it bounced back and we are happier than ever. Confused

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 20:26

Andrea Leadsom, just overtook Gove in the leadership betting.

Alastair Campbell is spreading a dangerous rumour on twitter.
He thinks Theresa May HAS A PLAN!!!!!!

Fascinating thread. By pure coincidence today is the anniversary of Hitler's night of the Long Knives. Fitting, n'est-ce pas?

Izlet · 30/06/2016 20:32

I'm also convinced that Boris and Gove are trying to get each other knocked out of the race so they can avoid all responsibility for this fiasco. They probably cooked it up over asparagus at the weekend.

Chalalala · 30/06/2016 20:37

well, if Boris was going to have Gove as chancellor and Brexit negotiator, then I'm glad he dropped out

although I am liking this new, vengeful Boris. Keep the dirt coming!

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 20:40

Guardian:

Theresa May has about 70 supporters.
Stephen Crabb has about 20 supporters.
Gove has little more than a dozen backers.
Andrea Leadsom about 10 backers
Liam Fox has just four

More than 30 former Johnson supporters had yet to reveal their new choice.

About half the 330 Conservative MPs had said either nothing or promised to consult constituents and ponder the various candidates’ merits before deciding.

OP posts:
Chalalala · 30/06/2016 20:41

anyone knows who Theresa May's big allies are? ie who would be likely to be chancellor/Brexit negotiator?

Flatcoatfan · 30/06/2016 20:41

Following this thread a bit obsessively. Thank you for all your brilliant insight. I've leant so much.

TheBathroomSink · 30/06/2016 20:42

Andrea Leadsom, just overtook Gove in the leadership betting.

I wouldn't make too much of this just yet - the volume in the market at the moment is tiny, so even small bets can shift someone's price quite a lot. Not to mention, most of the bookies hate the political markets nearly as much as reality tv, so they try to keep the odds as close to each other as possible.

noblegiraffe · 30/06/2016 20:45

Dominic Cummings says he won't be running Gove's campaign.

From 25th June:
Allies of David Cameron are reportedly preparing to support Theresa May if she decides to run for the Conservative leadership against Boris Johnson.
"I would find it all but impossible to have him as my leader," a senior Tory source told The Times.

Interesting Article from 2013
www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/mar/10/theresa-may-eyes-conservative-leadership-realist

It mentions Sarah Wollaston & Maria Miller as May / Cameron supporters

It seems, she is loyal to Cameron, and Cameronites have been trying to position her to defeat Boris.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2016 20:55

The bookies are dead to me since last week. I'm ignoring them from now on.
