Anyone agree?

OP posts:

Because until we have deals, trade will be under the general rules of the WTO leading to higher tariffs and non-tariff barriers that impede trade.

Vri123 · 03/07/2016 11:59

What is an example of a non-tariff barrier?

I am typing this on an iPad which is a little more expensive to buy on Amazon uk than to get my Df to buy on Amazon us and bring over in their hand luggage but not so much that it's worth doing. In front of me is a Panasonic tv (Japan?), a Xbox (USA), a Salem box (Asia somewhere??) and I bought them all on the basis of quality, functionality and price. So, do tariffs make that much of a difference?

IPityThePontipines · 03/07/2016 12:12

Mail on Sunday doing a hatchet job on Leadsom. She's a Brexit hypocrite, apparently.

May getting a sympathetic article about not being able to have children.

So that's a massive Fuck You from the Mail to Gove and Leadsom.

It's also more infighting between Dacre of the Daily Mail and Grieg of the Mail on Sunday. Smile

claig · 03/07/2016 12:24

'It's also more infighting between Dacre of the Daily Mail and Grieg of the Mail on Sunday.'

No because Dacre is also backing May. It looks like the Mail is backing the Establishment, maybe Rothermere prefers that.

Vri123 · 03/07/2016 12:27

The Mail has plumbed new depths today. This from the soft focus piece on Theresa May:
There is invariably an air of calm around Mrs May, who, dressed in a crisp white blouse, looks as slender and serene as the swans that glide beneath nearby Sonning bridge.

ManonLescaut · 03/07/2016 12:34

Non-tariff barriers

If you order goods direct from the US you may be liable for customs duty if over £120, import vat if over £18, & of course shipping charges. That's why your dad brings it over with him.

claig · 03/07/2016 12:34

Vri123, I agree. They must think their readers are stupid.
They seem quite desperate to get May in. I am not sure it will be so clear cut.

SnowBells · 03/07/2016 13:03

Sorry, but the more I know about her, the more she sounds like a Tea Party nutjob to me.

I don't trust politicians who are too much into religion. Who knows, maybe that voice of God they're listening to is just a sign they're a little gaga.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2016 13:34

Leadsom strikes me as a complete headbanger whose aims for the UK are about as based in fact as I am Cleopatra.

Vri123 · 03/07/2016 15:14

Except he doesn't bring the iPad over. I will order it from Amazon uk I.e. already imported as there isn't much price difference... certainly not anything like the numbers you quote.

Vri123 · 03/07/2016 15:22

May I ask if the people on this thread who are anti-Leadsom would vote Tory normally? Or is it that you'd not have anything good to say about a member of the Tory party irrespective of who it is?

RosesareSublime · 03/07/2016 15:28

Leadsom strikes me as a complete headbanger whose aims for the UK are about as based in fact as I am Cleopatra Confused

she has intimate knowledge of how eu works having been on a team looking at this precise subject. She went onto the team as Pro EU and has come out, very much pro Exit. I think that counts for something.

Basicbrown · 03/07/2016 16:40

Either way, her plan is a step into completely unchartered waters - do you really want to take the risk that Leadsom is wrong?

I would rather take that risk that have someone without a plan for the UK outside the EU.

RedToothBrush · 03/07/2016 17:09

The Chilcot Enquiry is going to come out this week and its looking like its going to come out saying, more than anything, that going into a major political decision without a proper plan is negligent.

Knowing that, I do believe that if Chilcot had come out before the referendum, the result would be very different.

So Leadsom coming out this week, of all weeks, saying that she intends to plough on now pressing the a50 button immediately without a proper plan, is quite frankly off her rocker.

ManonLescaut · 03/07/2016 17:54

Except he doesn't bring the iPad over. I will order it from Amazon uk I.e. already imported as there isn't much price difference... certainly not anything like the numbers you quote.

My mistake, I'm sorry I was posting while I was making lunch.

The numbers I quoted were nothing to do with ipads, I was simply explaining that if you are importing goods of a value of over £120 from US then you may be liable for duty, and for VAT on goods over £18.

Note the may.Tariffs vary widely according to the type of goods, and you'd need a duty calculator to work out the rate.

I really don't know much about Apple, but afaik US makes its own Apples, some European countries make Apples, but China is the biggest manufacturer of Apple products. US ipads would presumably have been made within the US but a UK ipad on Amazon marketplace could have come from anywhere. Apples products on Amazon US & Amazon UK are all sold by marketplace sellers not by Amazon itself. For that reason the range of ipad prices varies widely.

I recently bought an Ipad mini 4 from Amazon marketplace for £285 as opposed to £319 in PCWorld/Currys or John Lewis. I've no idea where it came from originally. I did once buy a Samsung phone from Amazon marketplace with the box, instructions, everything in Chinese, so I assume it wasn't intended for the European market!

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2016 17:57

Roses

I said her aims for the country, not her knowledge of the EU.

ManonLescaut · 03/07/2016 17:59

Luckily for Blair his major political fuckup is overshadowed by this one.

Sallyingforth · 03/07/2016 18:34

NO-ONE had a plan for the UK outside the EU. All we have ever been given is impossible promises, like stopping immigration while still having free trade, giving £350m a week more to the NHS, etc etc.

We need someone with solid experience in government and in negotiating with Europe, to try and get us out of the fucking awful hole we have dug ourselves.

That someone certainly isn't Leadsom.

Basicbrown · 03/07/2016 18:39

I don't think that experience of old is really that helpful. We will have to beg to differ. Leadsome is the only one so far who has articulated a plan, whether you think it's workable or not. And as for that 350m nonsense we need to look forward not back.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 03/07/2016 18:49

Yeah, except I'd rather have someone leading the country who was in no way part of the campaign that told those lies.

80sMum · 03/07/2016 18:50

Until I saw her on an ITV referendum debate a couple of weeks ago, I had never heard of Andrea Leadsom! Who is she? What has she done? What are her credentials? What makes get PM material?

ManonLescaut · 03/07/2016 18:55

Leadsome is the only one so far who has articulated a plan, whether you think it's workable or not

Anyone can articulate a plan! The question is whether it's viable, when you have the welfare of a country at stake.

ManonLescaut · 03/07/2016 18:57

Anyway as Phoebe from Friends almost said: 'this is not a plan it's not even a pla...'

The80sweregreat · 03/07/2016 19:05

She was on this morning with Marr and already touted herself as the new Maggie ( good forbid!) She seems a bit fake to me - Marr also mentioned if she would publish her tax returns and she seemed very much on the back foot about that. She didn't have a plan as such, just that she would trigger A50 and start her talks.
She is an ex banker and former energy secretary, she might be poplar with the Tory faithful as she hasn't got any skeletons in the cupboard, so far. She has been an MP for a number of years and , as she kept banging on about on TV, she is a ' a mother, and grandmother' - reminded me of the speech the Queen finally gave when Diana died - only because she was pushed into it mind you. She is another Farage in my opinion -

Wordsaremything · 03/07/2016 19:10

She'd do well in the archers - just the right mix of complacency, snobbery, and mummy knows best. And good enunciation. Lynda Snell, watch out...
