When do you think it will feel better?

I know lots of you will want to say: "get over yourselves already", but please be kind (or say nothing!).

But for those of you for whom this is genuinely devastating, emotionally, morally, practically (if you or partner is non-British), or job-wise - when do you think it will start to feel better?

I'm waking every morning feeling as if, yes, the sky has fallen if, or as if I've experienced a personal bereavement.

OP posts:

Thank goodness I've found this thread - I thought it was just me over reacting. I've had a really bad week, struggled to smile, even cried at work. I have a 10k race next Saturday to focus on so will try and start again.

Figmentofmyimagination · 01/07/2016 22:17

Tupper don't worry - I've cried at work - twice - and have managed less than 8 hours sleep in a week (eeek) fighting the return of obsession and depression. I'm trying to do one tiny kind thing - something directed outside myself - each day - I know it sounds trite.

I'm full of rage and incomprehension.

MelanieCheeks · 01/07/2016 23:19

Ah, the Last Leg. I love youuuuuuu!

redhat · 02/07/2016 08:24

Dora have you seen the movie/read the book "Look Who's Back"? It's about Hitler waking up and fining himself alive in the present day (available on Netflix). The very end part of the movie is particularly poignant. This isn't really a spoiler but it shows clips of what is going on in the world today and Hitler saying "Now this I can work with". It's really quite scary. The world doesn't feel at all safe or stable anywhere at the moment. I can see why your grandmother made the comment she did.

MelanieCheeks · 09/07/2016 18:28

Must look out that book.

How are we feeling, one week after the last post?

I've just subscribed to The New European. Part of me feels like switching off and going " out of my hands, I don't care, la la la", and part is rolling it's sleeves up going, "bring it".

Helmetbymidnight · 10/07/2016 09:24

I'm getting used to this new reality.

I've enjoyed spending time with friends who are variously pissed off, outraged, frightened, shocked, etc and it's been great meeting new people or people who I didn't expect to, who are feeling the same.

I've incredulously read some of the left-wing brexit fantastists on Mumsnet who bizarrely - and without any basis at all - seem to believe that lives in deprived parts of the country are now set to massively improve. I'm not sure who fascinate me more - the wishful thinkers or the 'Oh, I didn't know what I was doing' crowd...

Three of my friends have been racially insulted. - With direct reference to Brexit.

So...Meh...for me.

drspouse · 10/07/2016 09:35

I'm back from holiday and seeing my normal group of friends again, back to work tomorrow. Just starting to hear how upset friends and colleagues all are I think, which isn't going to help.
The news about the numbers of racist incidents (so no, we weren't imagining it) and the horrendous hypocrisy of the papers urging xenophobia and then throwing up their hands in horror.
My Eastern European but non EU friend said she thought things were so much better here than even 5 years ago and now the news is making her feel so depressed.

TheElementsSong · 10/07/2016 09:45

Actually, that's an interesting point. In the first week or so, there were a number of vocal Leavers declaring (some outright, others with weaselly words) that reports of companies moving, jobs being lost and racist attacks were made up lies. I've noticed that's mostly quietened down now - I'm really, um, surprised at this Hmm, I mean, either a graceful admission that they were wrong or some concrete evidence that they were right is what I'd expect from our noble champions of the Bright Future.

Helmetbymidnight · 10/07/2016 09:54

Oh I think the posters who were 'walking on air' will just say any problems are to do with the power vacuum/uncertainty and nothing to do with their brexit vote...

I do feel we're going back in time- socially and economically - and we did it to ourselves ("and that's what really hurts") hopefully we will see a new political engagement and activism as a result.

TheElementsSong · 10/07/2016 17:40

I take back what I said in my previous post. Arron Banks (big sponsor of Leave) is a classy guy:

TheElementsSong · 10/07/2016 17:42

Sorry, I'll try that again.

Helmetbymidnight · 10/07/2016 20:13

My god, what a twat.

TheElementsSong · 10/07/2016 22:55

He's a prominent financier of the Leave movement, but I guess we'll get radio silence from Leavers.

drspouse · 13/07/2016 17:10

I keep thinking I can cope with reading the threads in the Referendum section but no, they are all still full of people who don't understand why we could possibly be upset.

And my FB timeline is still full of lovely, lovely friends and colleagues who have no idea what their personal futures will hold and/or people watching the whole of UK politics implode.

So I'm continuing to hide all the threads.

MelanieCheeks · 13/07/2016 17:12

The Westministenders thread is a good read - very informative, a nice gentle humour and very little acrimonious accusations, more forward looking.

MelanieCheeks · 13/07/2016 17:17

And I found this an interesting read, having studied the concept of a BATNA during negotiation/ management studies.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 13/07/2016 18:22

FFS - I was just tearful at Dave walking out of Downing St with his kids. Tearful I tell you. Hysteria.

V interesting Melanie, thanks!

Underparmummy · 14/07/2016 14:54

I'm glad to find you all. I felt like I was going mad. Everyone being normal and stuff and me feeling sick when I woke up each morning.

Valentine2 · 15/07/2016 23:47

We have actively started looking into immigrating elsewhere so yes it's every single day that I feel I will be leaving my home behind at some point in future. This anger just doesn't go away.

lazysummer · 16/07/2016 18:53

I felt temporarily OK when I thought that Theresa May had a cunning plan to keep us in. Then she repeatedly said, "Brexit means Brexit" and appointed a load of Leavers to deal with it. I am trying to convince myself it must be a ploy to make them realise the halcyon future they promised us is impossible. I am obviously deluded.
I thought at first that something would happen to prevent it. It makes no sense at all. The world has gone mad.
So, OP, I know exactly how you feel. I have felt angry with so many people but David Cameron has to take the overall blame, despite his lovely family.

Cinnamon2013 · 16/07/2016 19:02

Here you all are. I've felt like I don't know if I'm going mad or if feeling like this is the sanest thing in the world. Being sleep-deprived with a baby and toddler has made it harder. I feel worried and sad about the world, things just feel dark. I'm v v happy in my personal life but I cannot be happy. I feel like I'm surrounded by racists I. This country even though no one I know is one. I am still having 'if only' moments - if only I'd campaigned actively, if only the rain hadn't been so bad that day. I feel sad that we are heading into another recession that was so, so preventable.

lazysummer · 16/07/2016 19:19

Ah, the rain. Yes- there was a lot of flooding that probably stopped people from getting to the ballot boxes because they were mopping up. There were also severe delays on our line- took DH hours to get home, and many probably didn't make it. Then there was the uncoordinated Remain campaign; poor advertising; too much info on the economy (all true but many weren't interested); the media being too balanced (apart from the tabloids). Other people around me do seem to be getting on with their lives, but not me. Glad others feel the same, though it does give a false security and a hope that they won't go through with it. They will.

Yes Draylon, that's true.

Here's a verbatim conversation I had with a "family member" (fm)

Fm: well all the brexit stuff has finally blown over, thank goodness

Me: how do you mean? The madness is just starting...

Fm: oh what? You didn't vote to remain?

Me: uh huh...

Fm: you like being ruled by a European super state, do you? Letting them make our decisions...

Me: they don't make our decisions. Alright which eu legislation did you object to in particular?

Fm: (long pause) ppi?

Me: wtf
