Democracy 'Intelligent' people vs 'stupid' people

TinnTinn · 29/06/2016 08:13

Some people are too stupid to be allowed to vote. I've been hearing a lot of this since the referendum.

Should this come into democracy? Or is it possible that different socio economic, political and regional groups within a country have very different experiences, wants, needs, hopes and aspirations. Chances are these will differ from other groups of people. Does this somehow invalidate their views?

I find it bizarre that people really did buy into the notion that entirely unelected, undemocratic people in Brussels were coming up with bizarre and random rules and regulations for the fun of it.

Grin

Lizard people.

Itinerary · 29/06/2016 12:49

"entirely unelected, undemocratic people in Brussels were coming up with bizarre and random rules and regulations for the fun of it."

They came up with them in all seriousness, which is even worse!

Elvesandthepoomaker · 29/06/2016 13:08

I've been out of the UK education system for a while but what the hell happened to the teaching of Citizenship in secondary schools? I'm guessing it went the way of PSHE - not taken seriously by non-expert teachers.

roundaboutthetown · 29/06/2016 13:09

Except they weren't actually bizarre and random... Claiming they were is as ridiculous as claiming that only thick people voted to leave the EU.

smallfox1980 · 29/06/2016 13:16

Totally agreed round..

Can you give examples of the bizarre and ridiculous?

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 13:17

That was actually one thousand people - don't be such a sucker for sound bites. That IS foolish

Even if it was only a thousand people wondering what the EU was AFTER they voted (which it wasn't, it was many times that), then that would be a thousand people too many, and a thousand people who shouldn't be allowed to vote on something they don't understand. You might as well let toddlers vote, or dogs.
Or EU nationals living in the UK, who weren't allowed a say in their own future, unlike the fools who voted without the first idea of what they were doing.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 29/06/2016 13:18

I have to hold my hands up and say i'm guilty of winding up remain supporters.

Lweji · 29/06/2016 13:21

They came up with them in all seriousness, which is even worse!

Are those real ones or imaginary ones by the likes of the Daily Mail and the Sun?

AYD2MITalkTalk · 29/06/2016 13:33

I have to hold my hands up and say i'm guilty of winding up remain supporters.

Definition of a troll. Not this new thing where anyone who's nasty or objectionable online gets called a troll, but your good old-fashioned trolly troll. Unusual to see one admitting to it!

Jasonandyawegunorts · 29/06/2016 13:37

your good old-fashioned trolly troll.

Yep.

Unusual to see one admitting to it!
It made the endless threads a lot more fun.

HubrisComicGhoul · 29/06/2016 13:37

I think that the "some people are too stupid to vote" is just an expression of frustration at "turkeys voting for Christmas" and it's all the more frustrating if you are someone that is going to suffer as well.

If it was only the turkeys getting plucked and cooked I would feel sympathetic, but as it's my family that is going to suffer I'm very very angry.

Justanotherlurker · 29/06/2016 13:38

Even if it was only a thousand people wondering what the EU was AFTER they voted (which it wasn't, it was many times that),

It wasn't, the google trends show how many it was, it was 1000 people, i think you should maybe do some proper research instead of relying on being spoon fed by the media (oh the irony!!)

Im a remain voter before you try and slander me....

Itinerary · 29/06/2016 13:40

but as it's my family that is going to suffer I'm very very angry.

It would be the same if remain had won. A lot of people who believe the EU is a bad thing for everyone including their families would be angry.

Justanotherlurker · 29/06/2016 13:41

Again for those that missed it, here is one of many that can point you in the right direction

Gove changed the rules so PSHCE wasn't mandatory any more, didn't he?

almondpudding · 29/06/2016 13:55

The people who some want to disenfranchise.

In the event of a war requiring conscripts, will those without a vote be exempt from being called up?

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 13:57

It wasn't, the google trends show how many it was, it was 1000 people, i think you should maybe do some proper research instead of relying on being spoon fed by the media (oh the irony!!)

Perhaps you should, then you might know that if you add up all the slightly different search terms (What is the EU/What does the EU do/what does Brexit mean/etc ad infinitum) you actually get many many times 1000 instances of very stupid google searches AFTER the vote that they should have done BEFORE.
Who was it was spoon fed and misinformed...that would be you then.

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 13:58

It would be the same if remain had won. A lot of people who believe the EU is a bad thing for everyone including their families would be angry

Nobody would have lost their jobs as a direct and quick result of a Remain vote. The pound wou;dn't have tanked, pensions wouldn't be worth less the very next day.
Do try to make some sense.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 29/06/2016 14:00

I also - and this is only conjecture - don't think that Remain voters would have been shouting 'fuck off, you don't belong here' at anyone.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 29/06/2016 14:05

you actually get many many times 1000 instances of very stupid google searches AFTER the vote that they should have done BEFORE.

To be fair a lot of those would probably chidlren and teenagers from all over the world who have see it trending in news feeds and on twitter.

But don't let actual logic stop you from thinking it's the exit voters

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 14:11

No, we're talking about UK origin searches, not worldwide.

HubrisComicGhoul · 29/06/2016 14:11

What exactly will get better as a result of us leaving the EU?

We make & export bugger all, so we can't take advantage of a lower £.
Fishing quotas are going to remain.
Many area's receive EU finding that will not be replaced by the government.
Any saving we make from not paying into EU will be wiped out by the additional interest added by a drop in our credit rating.
There will be less jobs in the immediate future.
Farming subsidies will reduce, but stay as most farmers are Tory voters.
Odds are we will pay substantially for access to the single market & keep FOM.

But it's all okay, because a have given the Tories the right to breakdown and rebuild our legal system and law to their will (and our detriment) in the name of sovereignty.

Well done slow hand clap

Jasonandyawegunorts · 29/06/2016 14:12

No, we're talking about UK origin searches, not worldwide.

Do people under the age of 18 not exist in the UK?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 29/06/2016 14:13

Doing some research it appears that thousands of people under 18 live in the UK and has access to google.

howabout · 29/06/2016 14:15

"Reverse Greenland" would probably prompt most experts in EU constitutional law to do a google search - I am sure there are many more such post-Brexit interesting details to ponder.

The stock market is now back above its 5 year average and the £ is rising.

If I were a European company or indeed Richard Branson I may well be muttering about relocating given that the UK has just disavowed its EU obligations with regard to providing state aid - spin on all sides as most voters would expect whatever their intelligence surely.
