Are there are some very sore losers after the EU Ref result?

Should we now challenge parliamentary elections too if we don't like the result on the basis that some people are too lower class/poor/stupid to make a proper first time vote?

Or could that be a tad arrogant and patronising to the the section of the electorate that cast their vote and won, 'ignorant numpties' or not?

Any complaints from the Leavers about anything the Remain side have said is rather hypocritical given threads like this. Extrapolate that across the country.

If there are "sore losers" amongst the Remainers, there are nasty wankers amongst the Leavers.

Floisme · 27/06/2016 09:23

Yes very well played, Brexiters. Jolly good game and all that. Toodle pip.

applecatchers36 · 27/06/2016 09:24

It is not a game of football, we are all losers as a result of this referendum, but if you like sporting analogies, it's certainly an own goal.

Interesting to hear that some of the posters used by the leave campaign were outright lies (350 million for the NHS) and others depicting refugees are being investigated under the criminal offence of ' insighting racial hatred'.

sorenofthejnaii · 27/06/2016 09:28

I notice the media who were prominent in the campaign to Leave such as the Daily Mail are focusing on the people complaining about the result instead of doing its job and asking the questions the country would like to know.

Such as what's the plan now?

PNGirl · 27/06/2016 09:28

Yes, it's definitely about being sore losers and not being afraid my lovely Italian neighbours are going to be beaten up for being a bit too not-white-British by the same people who were eating in their restaurant last week. And then when all the far right racist groups find out we're not "sending them all back" there'll be violence. Can't wait man, it's gonna be awesome times.

brodchengretchen · 27/06/2016 09:30

How can we make sure next time that voters really do know what they are voting for? And still stay democratic?

BertrandRussell · 27/06/2016 09:31

What do you mean "next time"?

sorenofthejnaii · 27/06/2016 09:33

It's called a manifesto. Costed calculations, promises, explaining what you are voting for, your vision.

Not 'we'll leave the EU and it will solve all your problems but we don't know and the problems you have are not going to be solved by our vision but they might be, we can't tell but it'll be fine so vote for us'

FilthyRascal · 27/06/2016 09:36

I saw a petition asking for the remit of the electoral commission to be extended - so they can act when a political group lies in a campaign.

I think this would be a very good start to making sure people know what they're voting for.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/06/2016 09:37

sore because of the consequences not the mere fact of losing. its not a game of Monopoly

Somerville · 27/06/2016 09:38

I'be just been listening to Osbourn and Johnson's statements from earlier. Shock Article 50 is being kicked into the long grass. That's very evident now.

My mood is improving.

roundandroundthehouses · 27/06/2016 09:42

It isn't a question of who "won" and who "lost". I've voted many times and, on at least half of those occasions, the side I was on didn't prevail. When that happens I accept the democratic decision, but that doesn't mean that I've stopped believing that the policies/party I voted for would have been better for the country. And I have always been entitled to continue saying that, because that's democracy.

This referendum has been an entirely different ball game. I believe that hugely complex issues were presented to the people in too simplistic and hyperbolic a way. I can't respect the result because I didn't respect the campaign - to a point where I believe it was undemocratic. I am also now extremely worried about the future of the country, not least because I live in Northern Ireland. Again, that's not about winning or losing. In fact, I want to be proved wrong. Honestly. I want to look back in five years' time and laugh at my stupid self, and say that the country was right to vote Leave.

But yeah. Yah boo sucks to me and all the other sore losers.

brodchengretchen · 27/06/2016 09:43

BR, by 'next time' I mean what the ruling elite will accept as their definition of democracy. With reference to that, the taxpayer stumped up at least £9m for last week's effort, add to that a manifesto for each side to each household (as with general election).

Sore losers is akin to a footy match result. Not something which could cause financial misery for many. The break up of the UK. But it's OK we have our sovereignty back! Plus the rise of racism and sectarian violence.
So yes as a remain I am a sore loser.

BertrandRussell · 27/06/2016 09:45

"BR, by 'next time' I mean what the ruling elite will accept as their definition of democracy"

I'm sorry, I don't understand that.

BlunderWomansCat · 27/06/2016 09:47

A referendum is not legally binding. It is merely an 'advisory'.

David Cameron hasn't yet invoked Article 50, previously he stated he would do this immediately if the leave campaign won.
I'm watching events with interest.

Badders123 · 27/06/2016 09:47

"Sore losers"!!!?
This isn't a fucking game
This is people's lives and their children's futures.
Fuck you

originalmavis · 27/06/2016 09:47

What about the sore winners? Vandalising the polish centre in Hammersmith, yelling at people to 'go home', hate mail shoved through letterboxes.

This just isn't right. This is not my country.

brodchengretchen · 27/06/2016 09:48

I can't respect the result because I didn't respect the campaign - to a point where I believe it was undemocratic.

Do you think having a referendum at all was necessary or relevant to NI?

OP posts:
HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 27/06/2016 09:49

well the referendum was non-binding and advisory only. It is not at all "undemocratic" to not act on it considering the consequences and the margins.

Elected MP's will still have to vote on leaving the EU and I don;t see how they could possibly be doing their job,s to vote to leave , when most of them believe it would not be in the best interest of (whatever tatters remain of) the UK.

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2016 09:50

Question:
What have you won?
What have you achieved?

If you can answer that properly beyond a slogan, I'll be impressed. Seeing as its currently pretty all just in Johnson's head.

Its not about sore losing. The future of this country is not about winning or losing. Its about there being a problem with a manipulation and contempt for the public (including for people who voted leave ironically), a power vacuum and a lurch to the right.

The framing of everything being 'them and us' in how react to the result is actually part of that - its a divide and conquer tactic and again shows contempt for the electorate - whilst people make a grab for power and ignore what the Leave voters think they have said with their vote.

There will be a lot of angry Leave voters soon enough, as their main reasons for leaving are compromised in the process.

That does not sit right with me, as much as my own unhappiness with the result.

I don't think referenda are a good way of desiring complicated issues.

ApocalypseSlough · 27/06/2016 09:51

Deciding.

DancingDinosaur · 27/06/2016 09:52

Your leaders are running scared and backtracking on every single promise (lie) they made, the pound is screwed, the markets are in turmoil, company after company is announcing plans to leave the UK and racist abuse and violence has mushroomed over the weekend.

Yep this. What a win. Well done op, I can see why you would be proud.

ilovesooty · 27/06/2016 09:52

For fuck's sake.
