AIBU to think many Remainers will echo Lily Allen

sandrabedminster · 26/06/2016 02:48

Lily voted to remain, but is now exited about brexit and admits she was brainwashed by project fear.

I feel many uneducated and easily swayed remainders like her will see actually change is good, as it was shit and this is a real change.

OP posts:
Pete10uk · 27/06/2016 17:59

How I see the vote went:-

The Voters - 72% of eligible people
15% People with a balanced believe that pulling out of the EU is worth the risk and willing to give it ago.
10% People who are actually Racist in some form.
27% People open to some of the ideas of leaving and wanting to give the government a kick up the ares not believing their vote would make a difference, the so called protest voters.
40% People who have taken a balanced view that while there may be some advantages to leaving, the future is far from certain, and the risk is not worth taking, or that we are in fact stronger together.
8% People couldn’t be bothered with thinking about it and doesn’t want change.

The Non Voters. 28% of eligible people.
20% People Would have voted remain but didn't make the effort to vote because they didn't for one minute think that the vote for out would win.
8% Mildly Racist Older voted that couldn’t make it to the Polling station.

I accept the democratic process but on such an important decision which actually came in so close, would it not be best to double check that everyone voted the way they actually wanted to?

You may not agree with my numbers and I hope they add up to 100% or I'll look stupid, but they have been plucked from thin air just like most of the numbers we were given in the run up.

thecatfromjapan · 27/06/2016 18:06

The view that Brexit isn't going to happen needs to stop.

I don't know what a general election is going to achieve either because other than ALL parties adroitly making noises to repeal/revoke Brexit, there will be nothing to choose between them.

If anyone on Mumsnet seriously still believes that their vote to Leave isn't going to take effect, they need to think again. One of the few things that Johnson's article today did say was that Article 50 will be triggered. As IPitythePontypines said, in the third post in this thread, we're looking at trying to negotiate a sub-par EEA deal: yes to immigration; yes to access to the single market; no to the ECJ.

There are lots of Leave voters that will be pleased with that result; there will be some that will not. However, if anyone is still labouring under the delusion that their vote was gestural, with only a symbolic reality, they need to stop thinking that and accept the reality of it.

For what it's worth, Lily Allen sounds to me like someone looking for positives.

bunnyfuller · 27/06/2016 18:19

The OP said Lily Allen was 'exited' not 'excited' so presumably she'll be off to a non-European tax haven?!

bluegaloo · 27/06/2016 18:21

The OP is hilarious! I knew EXACTLY what I was voting for when I chose remain. Unlike the gentleman I spoke to today, who told me he voted to leave because his pension company is now owned by a French bank! So now apparently the EU was responsible for the global banking crisis-god save us!

bunnyfuller · 27/06/2016 18:21

The OP really showed them 'uneducated remainders' with her utter disregard for capital letters or correct grammar. Cough.

Pettywoman · 27/06/2016 18:24

Lily Allen, FFS!

tinkertanya · 27/06/2016 18:26

Looks like you who began the thread are the one living in Lalaland. Remainders are regretting nothing. I don't. I will vote remain over and over again. All the lies are unveiling. I agree with Roundaboutthetown and all who saw this post as absurd.

thecatfromjapan · 27/06/2016 18:26

Hmm. Seems as though Johnson has been firmly kicked back to reality about the ECJ, too. Smile

What an utter diarrhoea-inducing parasite Johnson is.

Back to Lily: I think a lot of people are trying to find positives in this and looking for a way forwards. That said, I'm not sure why you would set that much store by the opinion of a singer, however wonderful. It's just an opinion. I need an extrapolation of why the OP thinks this is important and what she thinks the significance of it is.

impossible · 27/06/2016 18:31

It’s a pity Lily Allen and her shifting, uninformed opinions get any attention at all. I voted to remain and am horrified by the racism and xenophobia appearing as a consequence of Brexit. How can things possibly be better? My non-white friends are being told to ‘go home’ , the pound is plummeting, Scotland will probably become independent (giving us a land border with Europe..) and a lot of people feel thoroughly ashamed of being English.
Perhaps the most horrible thing about Brexit is the whole terrible mess was created by a bunch of millionaires, rather as if they were having a bit of fun at a debating society. Cameron set up the referendum with no controls so it is impossible to contest the tight margin and two millionaires - an old Etonian (Boris johnson) and an ex Dulwich College boy (Nigel Farage) - managed to present themselves as the underdog’s champions. They were able to do this because the Daily Mail (owned by Lord Rothermere) and the Sun (owned by Rupert Murdoch) published lies about the outcome of exit (eg huge extra funds to the NHS), lies that are now being retracted. it is terrifying that these people wield the power while the poorest in our society are about to be shafted again. The poor will be poorer and angrier and Lily Allen will go her sweet way.
I wish I knew what we could do about this and can only hope the younger generation will be more politically involved and thing will change.

Benedikte2 · 27/06/2016 18:35

I can't see a reason for either side to be excited.
Brexit means we lose the favourable terms we had as part of our membership eg rebate on the money we paid in ( most others don't get this) and the EU grants etc. We also dont have to take the immigrants that are currently pouring into the rest of the EU.
If we want continued prosperity we have to enter into agreements like Norway which means we have to continue to pay into the EU without rebates or grants and have to agree to open borders from the EU.
So no extra money for anything and no curbs on immigration. Like Switzerland we'll have to pay extra to take advantage of Erasmus so our students can study in EU countries.
IF we don't go into EU trade agreement we'll have to pay levies like the rest of the world.
The old Commonwealth countries like Australia & NZ have moved on and found other markets (they are closer to SE Asia, anyway and transport is quicker and cheaper) Also their populations are much smaller than the combined EU countries.
Dream on if you think the UK will have an easy ride and will receive privileged terms because "they need us more than we need them" we will end up a backwater with no clout in the world. After all Greece was great once!

mumindoghouse · 27/06/2016 18:39

Kelvin McKenzie of The Sun just gone on LBC expressing "buyer's remorse" about his leave vote.

What celebrities vote doesn't matter be they smart or otherwise.

It is offensive to suggest remain votes were uneducated folk succumbing to fear. I am neither and stand by my vote.

However I am democratic. So vote stands and proof of pudding will be in eating once the pudding is cooked. It's only in the prep stage at the moment.

Once the Brexiteer leaders get over the shock of their own victory, and actually come up with a plan, then we'll know better where everyone stands.

OhLaVache · 27/06/2016 18:44

You want to talk about uneducated sandra? Post vote, the biggest Google search phrase in the UK was 'what is the EU?'. People have been voting to leave something they have no understanding of.

Ladyonashortfuse · 27/06/2016 18:50

Not me. She must be even madder than I thought.

merrymouse · 27/06/2016 18:56

I wouldn't say that I know what Lilly Allen thinks, or that her point of view is completely clear, or that because she is famous she knows more than anybody else. However a look at her later tweets shows that she is very far from being pro Brexit.

Fanjoferrets · 27/06/2016 19:01

The result was a 50/50 result.
If the balance of power had gone to remain then we would have done so but there would have been an impetus to create change and reform within the EU terms to pander and be conciliatory to the brexiters.
But the balance of power slightly edged to leave and so 100% goes their way and no way else.
And people wonder why other people are hacked off.

LellyMcKelly · 27/06/2016 19:04

I couldn't really give a stuff what Lily Allen says. This stupid referendum is going to decimate my sector which relies heavily on the EU for research funding and students. We've been out and out lied to, there isn't even a back of the fag packet plan, and nobody is going to get what they want from Brexit, because nobody had bothered to find out what it actually meant. A bunch of racists have hijacked the whole thing and are demanding that everyone goes home before they build a wall around Britain. Lily Allen can do one.

Janecc · 27/06/2016 19:08

ohlavache. Googling "what is the EU?"

Oh la vache. Exactement. Merde. Aux chiotes les Anglais (literally).

flippinada · 27/06/2016 19:09

Nothing against Lily Allen, she seems a decent kind of person (I'm thinking about last Wednesday), but I'm not sure why her opinion should be given more weight than anybody else's?

throwingpebbles · 27/06/2016 19:13

I expect agencies like this are rather more accurate predictors than a random celebrity ...

mummy2be30 · 27/06/2016 19:18

This is so ridiculous, we are leaving the EU it's done that's it. No amount of debate, petitions etc etc is going to change that. The remainers need to stop bleeting on and accept that fact, pull together and move forwards. FYI I voted leave, standby my vote, am educated and not easily swaying by fear tactics of any kind.

flippinada · 27/06/2016 19:21

Oh no, they're part of the sneering metropolitan elite and project fear, don't you know. Who needs experts. We're all sick of experts and besides we've take charge of our own destiny and this isn't an almighty clusterfuck of epic proportions>

tinkertanya · 27/06/2016 19:21

True they are. The Roman Empire was once a huge empire, no one thought it could be reduced to nothing. Greece too. Soon the UK is breaking up too. Scotland first then Northern Ireland.
The AAA rating has gone today. The pound is on the floor. Who ignores experts but the mislead.

It's sad. The EU is not going to make it easy. We are going to be the example to every country using the EU as a scapegoat for their own problems.

In Leeds some were screaming to migrants
"Leave - we voted Leave!"
Very sad state of affairs.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/06/2016 19:23

'The remainers need to stop bleeting on and accept that fact, pull together and move forwards'

I'm afraid they don't. So you might want to consider ceasing the bleating yourself.

OhLaVache · 27/06/2016 19:24

Janecc yep! C'est ça.

nicolachristine · 27/06/2016 19:26

with the way the pound has fallen and the markets have slumped excitement is not what I am feeling. And when I hear how migrants are being treated I have to admit that terror is by far more accurate in explaining how I am feeling right now in regards to the UK's future.
