AIBU to think many Remainers will echo Lily Allen

sandrabedminster · 26/06/2016 02:48

Lily voted to remain, but is now exited about brexit and admits she was brainwashed by project fear.

I feel many uneducated and easily swayed remainders like her will see actually change is good, as it was shit and this is a real change.

Come on, OP, come back and explain to us numbskulls what contribution Lily Allen has to make to the discussion about the future of the UK outside EU.

I'm all ears.

LittleBearPad yes, an MEP, I forget that because he certainly doesn't do anything useful and doesn't represent me; I'd never vote for UKIP. Boris was driving this one. Farage is a mouthpiece but hopefully now finished.

merry

*somebody needs to be a net contributor in terms of their membership of any club otherwise it's some weird Ponzi scheme.

You pay for the benefits of membership. Nobody can accurately put a figure on what those benefits are, but in non monetary terms they are strengthening Europe as a place where countries share common values, access to trade, and cross border co-operation on things like climate agreements, safety regulations and security.

Of course we can have all those things outside the EU, but in the end it will probably look an awful lot like being inside the EU.*

Your comments remind me of the old adage which is about 'a man who knows the cost of everything. but the value of nothing'.

I suspect that some Leavers felt they weren't enough 'value' for the high cost of membership. The following days, weeks and months will show, but I suspect your last comment is important: we can have all those things outside the EU, but in the end it will probably look an awful lot like being inside the EU.

Floggingmolly · 26/06/2016 10:30

I'm not either uneducated or easily swayed (certainly not by a fecking airhead like Lily Allen), so no, op. I'm not at all optimistic for the future.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/06/2016 10:31

noblegirafe, you misunderstand me in your anger, I think.

The difference between Remainers and Brexiters in the point you're making is that Remainers are a cohesive group, they are pretty much like-minded and any casual racism is NOT the point of the group because immigration wasn't a highlighted issue - keeping things the same, ie. staying in Europe was and is the key point.

Brexiters had several 'issues', eg. sovereignty, EU and immigration. It's the immigration issue that has revealed a vile minority of racists and they are highlighted as being what Brexiters are comprised of. This is unfair. A whole group of people who are no more racist than the Remainers group is, have been tarred with the same brush.

I'm probably not explaining my point very well but I'm finding the constant references to Brexiters en bloc as being racist, very irritating.

noblegiraffe · 26/06/2016 10:36

I'm finding the constant references to Brexiters en bloc as being racist, very irritating.

I didn't say all Brexiters were racist thugs, but you did say that you did think Brexiters (not 'some' or 'many') would have accepted a remain vote in a better fashion. The existence of a vocal racist sub-section of Leave voters suggests that's obviously false even before you get to the fact that many people, Brexit or Remain don't like losing, or like an argument or are simply not very nice people.

loosechange · 26/06/2016 10:38

Before I opened the thread I sat there for 5 minutes trying to work out which Lily Allen song title summed up the remains.
Totally missed the point.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/06/2016 10:42

I'll apologise for that then, noblegirafe, I never do mean ALL but I can see that it looks that way. Racist people exist across the board. It's no more false to say that they're not evident in the Remain group (although not openly vocal) than it is to say that only the Leave group had the 'thick' voters who had no idea what they are voting for.

I will speak for myself then and say that had Brexit not been successful in the referendum, I would have shrugged my shoulders with a "C'est la vie". I completely understand though why other people feel differently.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 26/06/2016 10:44

Thank fuck we have singers to tell us to cheer up. I will immediately stop feeling fearful and look forward to the future.

FinderofNeedles · 26/06/2016 10:46

Minor celebrity expresses opinion on referendum outcome.

Yawn.

Are you her publicist?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 26/06/2016 10:48

YY Thora. I'm going to put "Smile" on repeat all day... that'll make everything ok.

Hobbitwife001 · 26/06/2016 11:10

Yes, I'm comforted by the fact that champagne socialist, ex-coke head, millionaire, has been Lily Allen thinks it's all going to be ok after all.

Maybe she could write a song about it, OP?

Cos we're certainly fucked down here in Wales....

neonrainbow · 26/06/2016 11:11

Its not very cricket to bring down lily's opinions saying shes just a pop star. Lots of mumsnetters feel their opinions are of utmost importance when they could be less well informed than lily is. Nobody but her knows how much reading she did about the subject. and saying your opinion counts more because you have a degree probably makes you the sort of person that some leavers were voting against. a degree does t make you any better than anyone else. At least shes getting involved on a national stage and not just bitching about the result on a parenting forum. And i voted remain.

GoodLoveShinesBrightly · 26/06/2016 11:21

I think it's not very cricket for a millionaire who won't be much affected by this to say, "chin up, it'll be fine" to people who as a result of not having her money will be severely affected by this for years to come.

RepentAtLeisure · 26/06/2016 11:30

I feel many uneducated and easily swayed remainders like her will see actually change is good

OP, I have a feeling you've seen the post vote graphs that show the uneducated were more likely to vote Out and the highly educated were far more likely to vote Remain, and you've been looking for a way to throw the term 'uneducated' at Remainer since.

Calling people stupid and easily led is not really the best way to attempt to soothe troubled waters...

roundaboutthetown · 26/06/2016 11:33

This country has always favoured "strong leadership" over democracy with its first past the post electoral system. I don't see any strong leadership, now, just a lot of people with conflicting desires waiting for someone to do what they want, and most people inevitably heading for disappointment. One thing I am 100% certain of is that more than 50% of the country will not be happy with what we get out of Brexit.

sandrabedminster · 26/06/2016 11:41

So no one actually read the op Biscuit

The point was totally missed!

OP posts:
KoalaDownUnder · 26/06/2016 11:47

I read the OP.

What was the point, then?

roundaboutthetown · 26/06/2016 11:48

The OP was ages ago. Only those incapable of understanding that conversations move on and people who haven't bothered to read the full thread would still be responding to the OP...

Hobbitwife001 · 26/06/2016 11:52

That's because the point was ludicrous, and no, I'm a remainer and not all change is good.
HTH.

sandrabedminster · 26/06/2016 11:57

On MN it seems to be only the remainders that are educated and know all the answers.

Dame lily Allen is both stupid and uneducated and voted remain.

Plenty of remainders are happy for change to happen.

OP posts:
LemonDrizzleFake · 26/06/2016 12:02

Thank god! Please tell me you are Brexit voter with all the answers. We've been waiting for you since Friday morning. I was beginning to worry there was no plan.
Please enlighten us!

roundaboutthetown · 26/06/2016 12:15

Who are the remainders?... Did they want to remaind and if so, what does remaind mean?

roundaboutthetown · 26/06/2016 12:22

Unfortunately, whilst change is needed, not all change is good change. Maybe it is inevitable, but in the same way WW2 was inevitable.
