Would they stand a chance? Interesting. DC got in with 11m votes, Tim Farron could have 16m on his side.

Just as well we've got Article 50 to fall back on then, plus an outgoing PM who has no intention of navigating the country through the impending shitstorm invoking Article 50 will cause.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 26/06/2016 10:28

I voted LibDem because of their stance on tuition fees. I would never vote for them again. I think Farron is an opportunistic arse. Most of his interviews blamed Corbyn. Oh, not Cameron for calling the referendum? Or Gove and Boris for campaigning for Leave? Well, of course not, because he thinks the LibDem have more chance of stealing disgruntled Labour voters. He has no integrity.

twitter.com/hashtag/INtogether?src=hash

There was a battle bus and everything!!!
(That took some searching to find anything at all about what they did. Nothing was in the news...)

LunaLoveg00d · 26/06/2016 10:30

Totally disgusted by this - and I'm a LibDem voter and ex party member.

It smacks of the nasty "we are the 45" campaign set up in the wake of the Scottish Indy Ref which was nasty, divisive and horrid.

By all means continue to be a strong advocate of maintaining ties with Europe, but this is the wrong way to do it. Have expressed my displeasure to them on Twitter already. No response.

I think they are treading very thin ice using the stance that they will not trigger the break from EU. How quickly do you think it will be before media basically put it forward as this: The LibDems are happy to ignore a democratic vote - the will of the people. This isn't the first time they've ignored the will of the people, is it? Remember tuition fees? LibDem are clearly not interested in what the people want.

LizKeen · 26/06/2016 10:34

The EU is posturing. They have to be seen to be unyielding as a message to other countries who could call referendums.

We are still in until Article 50 is invoked. There is nothing to backtrack on.

GingerIvy · 26/06/2016 10:37

Personally, I wonder if the harder the EU stamps on the UK after the 2 yr time period is started, the better it will be. Not because I want the UK to have difficulties, but because I'm hoping it will create a common enemy for the UK people. The politicians could capitalise on "look, they don't HAVE to make it difficult - look Merkel said there was no need, and they wouldn't - but yet they clearly have no respect for us as a country and are playing the bully." Maybe they could unite over disgust at the EU at that point. The country needs something to unite over.

gunting · 26/06/2016 10:38

They would ignoring a democratic vote by being voted in democratically.

That took some searching

Exactly. I agree with the article you linked but the Lib Dems have more clout than they think, and until Friday morning I didn't even realise they had an opinion. I do not believe they could not have done more, and APlaceOnTheCouch hits the nail on the head in saying they are now going for stealing Labour voters. At least Cameron believed in what he was saying and put his neck on the line for it.

GingerIvy · 26/06/2016 10:42

I also think that the fact that were virtually invisible in the run up to the election and then pop up suddenly saying they'll ignore the vote, will make them look like opportunists at best, wreckers at worst, trying to profit (politically) from the chaos. They're going to have to tread very carefully. There's logic and there's spin. And spin can be very damaging.

Boogers · 26/06/2016 10:44

Ginger totally agree.

gunting · 26/06/2016 10:48

I campaigned for Remain and 90% of brexiters I spoke with said 'we can vote our government out in 4 years, we can't vote out the EU'

Well maybe the remainers might just take that advice and vote in some 'opportunists'. After all, we can vote them out in 5 years.

I'm a Lib Dem member and receive communication from them. I can confirm that they were strongly pro Remain during the campaign and did their best to raise funds etc.

lovelyupnorth · 26/06/2016 10:55

Or in and I don't believe they are opportunists. Gove and BJ where far more opportunist than the LibDems. Hopefully by Cameron resigning he's also fucked up BJ and Goves careers.

Letmehaveausername · 26/06/2016 11:10

Well they done absolutely shit then didn't they? I didn't think LibDem even existed anymore, they're literally a joke party are they not? Not even a good joke, at least we can laugh at the stupidity of farage and the likes. LibDem is non existent round my area, and in a lot of different places I've lived over the years.

GingerIvy · 26/06/2016 11:23

I've not seen anyone from the LibDem party at all in the past year. They're MIA.

gunting · 26/06/2016 11:24

Ginger Farron was on the BBC 'great debate' 2 days before the referendum

OP posts:
Boogers · 26/06/2016 11:28

Gunting I've just Googled the BBC Great Debate and Farron wasn't on stage. Am I looking at the right thing?

n0ne · 26/06/2016 11:30

God, the bloody tuition fees thing again. The Lib Dems were the minority party in a coalition with the Tories. They COULD NOT do what they wanted with impunity. They tempered a lot of the more unpleasant policies of the Tories, and that's the best they could have hoped for.

They had my vote then and they will do again,

ThursdayLastWeek · 26/06/2016 11:35

I'm a member, I joined after the miserable GE last year.

I think opportunistic is a fair way to describe this move by Tim Farron, but that doesn't automatically make it a bad one.

If the LibDems rally enough before the next GE so that I don't have to vote Labour in a bid to keep self serving Boris out, I shall be very happy!

gunting · 26/06/2016 11:36

Boogers he wasn't on stage but he was on a panel that gave opinions between debates. Along with Caroline Lucas, SNP members, and Sarah Woolaston.

There were also a panel of leave voters such as UKIP, Priti Patel, boss of wetherspoons, a journalist.

OP posts:
APlaceOnTheCouch · 26/06/2016 11:40

The LibDems didn't have to be the minority party in a coalition government. They could have refused and/or they could have managed their time in coalition differently (as Menzies Campbell suggested).

BestIsWest · 26/06/2016 11:51

That was their big mistake I think. They should have remained in opposition.

gunting · 26/06/2016 11:51

Farron is on BBC North West politics show right now. He is very passionate. Shame we couldn't have seen more of this last week.
