Would they stand a chance? Interesting. DC got in with 11m votes, Tim Farron could have 16m on his side.

Liberal Dictators?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 26/06/2016 01:15

MPs do represent their constituents. That includes the just over 1:4 who didn't turn out to vote.

IPityThePontipines · 26/06/2016 01:22

The Lib Dems were very harshly treated in the last GE. As Laurie said, they tempered a lot of the Tories' schemes.

A manifesto pledge is not anti-democratic Hmm people can choose of they want to vote for it or not. Fallon is staying true to the founding principles of his party.

Kummerspeck · 26/06/2016 01:33

This is a shameless attempt to grab votes and shows what a low regard they have for democracy and for the electorate

My DDs first ever vote went to the LibDems as they pledged to not increase student loans, she has never forgiven them

LizKeen · 26/06/2016 01:34

At least someone is saying something. All is very quiet among our "leaders".

simplepedant · 26/06/2016 01:46

Anna Forbes
I understand that Tim Carton is saying that the Lib Dems will fight the next election on a platform.of opposition to.Brevity and a plan to seek to reverse it. Nothing undemocratic about that any more than continuing to oppose another Party is undemocratic if they win an election. I thought leavers were really hot on the sovereignty of the UK Parliament?
With the Tories split and Labour lacking clear leadership on this issue at the moment, this clear stand by the Lib Dems at least gives those of who are appalled by the prospect of Brexit for our country and our children a way to express those views and try to get it changed. Tim Farron has always been a passionate pro-European and certainly speaks for me and, I would think, many of the 48% of voters who ignored the lies of the Leave camp and voted to remain.

bookbuddy · 26/06/2016 01:51

Crazy times we are living in!?! I hope there is a GE in Autumn I find Boris a much more worrying prospect than the EU! He doesn't know what he stands for so how can he steer the ship?

Tim Farron ffs. Autocorrect is being really stroppy tonight - I fixed that three times and it snuck in and changed it again when I wasn't looking.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 26/06/2016 01:55

Corbyn is too busy sacking people at 1am

simplepedant · 26/06/2016 01:56

And Brexit of course

pastygothboy · 26/06/2016 01:58

Am joining Lib Dems forthwith.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 26/06/2016 08:11

To be fair to the other parties, the lib dems are and always have been pro-europe so the process of deciding how to move on is less fraught.

I imagine the main debate would've been on the democratic implications, and given the pig-in-a-poke nature of the referendum, it's not crazy to offer people a chance to decide whether or not they like the look of how post-EU UK is shaping up.

slamdunkthefunk · 26/06/2016 08:20

This is a ray of light in the darkness, I'd vote for them. Yes, it may be clutching at straws but I don't have any other straws to hold on to at present.
Seriously though, I do think a GE should be held, and this is the obvious move for a winning party line - vote for us and we will note invoke article 50. They do not have to remember.

Tiredemma · 26/06/2016 08:22

There is something in me that cannot forgive them for propping up the Tories in 2010.

Nivea101 · 26/06/2016 08:29

Tim Farron is my local MP but I certainly didn't vote for the wishy washy party but round here he's a sure winner each time.

RedToothBrush · 26/06/2016 08:31

Tiredemma
Labour - Lib pact or UKIP - Tory coalition?

How long will you hold that grudge for in the face of that?

Boogers · 26/06/2016 08:32

Tirednama Much as I hate the way they backtracked over tuition fees, I can't help but agree with what Nick Clegg said before the election regarding another coalition: "we will provide a heart to the Tories and a brain to Labour".

It's just a pity Farron was nowhere to be seen during the referendum campaign. His 'remain' stance might have gone down well with a few undecideds.

BestIsWest · 26/06/2016 08:38

I don't know...I was talking to some young people yesterday. They were even more furious about Brexit than they were about Student Fees.

They felt their natural political home would have been with the LibDems if it hadn't been for student fees. They may well drift back now .

Marmitelover55 · 26/06/2016 08:38

Yes this is a ray of hope - will be joining up

SisterViktorine · 26/06/2016 08:41

I have joined. I think this is our only hope of avoiding 10 years in recession and political chaos.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 26/06/2016 08:45

He has just said he wouldn't call another referendum it would be about renegotiating back in once left.

Boogers · 26/06/2016 08:51

renegotiating back once left

That's like renegotiating with your ex husband who demanded a divorce for him to return to the family home on his terms. It doesn't work like that, but I'll give Farron a sticker for trying. He's capitalising on the current mood, where it would have been more useful as the leader of a political party to have been more vocal this time last week.

slamdunkthefunk · 26/06/2016 08:51

But if we had a GE before we left, would he push the button?

lovelyupnorth · 26/06/2016 08:52

Farron was out and fighting during the referendum sadly wasn't powerful enough to be at the front.

He's my local mp. Didn't vote for him last time -spoilt my ballot. Will be voting for him next time. May even go as far as joining the party.

RedToothBrush · 26/06/2016 09:03

Nick Clegg on Wednesday

I don't get why people think only having 8 MPs is a problem. UKIP have none.
