PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

With the importance on this:

You can't simply invent new hurdles if you are on the losing side.

YourPerception · 25/06/2016 20:54

It is outrageous that those claiming to have signed a government petition are not checked off as legitimate on the electoral registered.

Imbroglio · 25/06/2016 20:56

It may be pointless but its a safe way to vent.

solomonsky · 25/06/2016 20:57

"A lot of my eastern European friends on Facebook signing and sharing this petition, tagging family in it who aren't even in the uk etc.
"
Do your friends know you are accusing them of dishonesty on here? I think the sort of person who would be breathlessly reporting this low-grade tittle-tattle would be singularly unlikely to have many Eastern European friends.

mummymeister · 25/06/2016 20:58

unless the petition attracts significantly more than the people who voted out, then it has nil to no chance.

remainers who think otherwise are deluded.

why would we as a country jeopardise our democracy - which took hundreds of years to evolve - on one vote because a handful of people don't like the outcome.

You can scream and shout until you are blue in the face, you can throw not only your toys but your blankets as well out of the pram, you can rail at how unfair it all is that you didn't win.

then wake up tomorrow and find that yep we are still going to leave the EU.

There are far too many people who have no idea how to handle not getting their own way. My generation were stupid to allow this. we encouraged the "everyone wins a prize at sports day" "no one must feel like a loser" crap that has generations unable to deal with not getting their own way.

Pull on your big girl/boy pants and wise up. start looking at what you can do to make this situation a success for you, your family and your friends.

Time to move on and get on with what needs doing.

solomonsky · 25/06/2016 21:00

Reports of "Go home Polish Vermin" stickers appearing on doorsteps in Huntingdon. This toxic referendum has stirred up some disgusting racist knuckle-draggers who feel emboldened and empowered.

Peppatina · 25/06/2016 21:05

Solomonsky I used to work in TNT, I have plenty of Eastern European friends.

They know how I voted, you'd probably combust if you knew how many agreed with me. Or does that fact just not 'go' with the need to paint all Leavers as racists?

And the guys that didn't agree with me? We actually manage to have grown up conversations about it all, imagine that.

Amazingly the poker games haven't turned into bloodbaths yet!

And trust me the ones signing and passing a round the petition aren't being shy about it. I'm just pointing out that IF this petition gets anywhere there should be questions about who exactly signed it and if they were eligible to vote in the first place.

OTheHugeManatee · 25/06/2016 21:07

The people signing this petition could be anyone, from anywhere. Over a million signatures - who are they? Are they even UK voters? Who can say?

I appreciate people are upset and want to vent, but it's not going to change anything. We are where we are and need to make the best of it.

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 21:07

I am not contemptuous of the people who voted 'leave'. Not at all; I think they are mistaken (I would do; after all I voted 'remain') but not surprised at all about the level of anger that many people have throughout the country & I think that anger is entirely justified.

But although I am sure that many made a carefully considered decision to vote 'leave' I do feel that for many others it was a protest vote at the way they have been treated by government. I feel that justifiable anger has been manipulated and misdirected at the EU; for all its (many) faults it offers us a great deal of benefits. We will notice if/when those benefits are gone that's for sure.

TBH if we are so worried about a democratic deficit we should look closer to home, at our unelected head of state, unelected upper house and unrepresentative first past the post system; and an establishment/elite that creams of so much of the country's wealth.

solomonsky · 25/06/2016 21:10

You are now claiming to speak for these legions of EE friends? You are the classic "Some of my best friends are.."

You are accusing people of dishonesty and you are unable to prove it. Pack it in, it's crappy behaviour.

BonnieF · 25/06/2016 21:10

I voted remain, but this proposal is completely ridiculous.

Leave won fair & square, by 1.3 million votes. Remainers now have to suck it up, because that's how it works in a democracy. If they don't like it, they can always fuck off to China.

solomonsky · 25/06/2016 21:12

I have several million Polish Facebook friends and they all say people who yell "Why don't you move to China" are stuttering pissweasels.

Peppatina · 25/06/2016 21:14

Solomonsky im not accusing people of anything.

I'm telling you what I have seen posted on Facebook.

I don't think they are being dishonest, I think they are acting in self interest which I'm pretty sure anyone would do in that situation.

But they aren't eligible to vote. Neither are 15 year olds.

This petition had no chance anyway but I'm pointing out that you have no idea who is signing it, whether they could even vote anyway and who is doing it multiple times.

As for legions of friends...not quite, but I suppose I am quite blessed in the friend department Grin

Peppatina · 25/06/2016 21:16

Solomon you are hilarious.

Do you think my polish friends should have disowned me for voting leave? Why are they able to have a grown discussions and accept there were good reasons that I felt me any I should vote out but you want to be offended on their behalf?

YourPerception · 25/06/2016 21:16

Gov petitions are scrutinised for fraud. A counter petition to the ban Trump petition had over 30k "signatures" removed.

This was posted on another thread. So eventually we will know if there was fraud.

Peppatina · 25/06/2016 21:16

And I agree with your seven million polish friends.

People who shout that are certainly pissweasels.

Ah good to know Yourperception!

Peppatina · 25/06/2016 21:18

(Backs lowly away from Solomonsky)

Ok...mind your feet people don't step in the froth.

This is what happens if you don't fit nicely in to the racist box some rabid Remainers need you to be crammed in to.

Imbroglio · 25/06/2016 21:19

If you look at the map it looks as I would expect it to, ie more signatures from places like London, Brighton, Cambridge and Bristol, not many from Clacton.

YourPerception · 25/06/2016 21:21

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/627734/Fiddle-Donald-Trump-Petition-UK-Government not the best paper the article shows fraud happens.

CountryLovingGirl · 25/06/2016 21:23

Over 60% should be the majority and then most people would accept that they won fair and square.

solomonsky · 25/06/2016 21:24

"This is what happens if you don't fit nicely in to the racist box some rabid Remainers need you to be crammed in to."

If you're not a racist then your Polish mates do really exist, and you are accusing them of dishonesty without any proof. So, the next time you meet them they will have no idea you've been slagging them off behind their backs. Close mates, are they?

You're doing the predictable and stale tactic of using made-up friends to ward off racism accusations. It's so utterly transparent.

Pogmella · 25/06/2016 21:25

The eligibility to sign petitions is that you're a British citizen or resident in the UK. It states no lower age limit, nor does it state you must be registered to vote.

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 21:27

Well let's not bother with Government petitions then if they are all a sham. There I was thinking that they were part of the democratic process. I am sure that fraud happens but how do we know it is widespread?
