PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Verbena37,

Think please. I'm British, with a British passport, a British state, sterling pension, small private sterling pensions on which I pay British HMRC tax - why I don't know as I've lived in Paris for 24 years and don't use UK services. The French are good enough to look after my cancer and MS at no charge, I pay my taxes here too.

My sterling pension is all I have and it's at the whim of currency exchange rates. These, as you have seen, are at the mercy of British government and the British referendum. Can you give me one valid reason why I was not alowed to vote on something so important to my future and wellbeing? Do you think that's democracy at work, or do you not care?

2nds · 26/06/2016 22:18

The petition is bullshit and I'm not signing. This is making us out to be sore losers, I wish to fuck it would just piss off.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 22:20

The remainers are saying leavers didn't make an informed choice whilst themselves not understanding the true nature and purpose of the petition they are throwing in everyone's faces to sign.

You could not make it up.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:21

Paris7 even though you've got a British passport, you were still not allowed to vote? I thought British people overseas could vote.

My Dh is an EU migrant who has worked extremely hard doing a shitty job for low pay in this country for the last 20 years and he wasn't allowed to vote because he hasn't got a British passport.

GreenishMe · 26/06/2016 22:23

I really want to believe that the vast majority of those who voted leave would do so again because then I'd be happy to accept their decision.

It's very condescending to suggest to people that they don't really know their own minds, don't you think?

It's not about whether you or anyone else is 'happy' to accept their decision second time around. It shouldn't be dependant upon getting the benediction of Remainers....should it?

I think that argument is just an excuse to demand another referendum.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 26/06/2016 22:23

I thought British people overseas could vote.

Not if lived abroad for over 15 years.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/06/2016 22:23

fraudulent signatures, including 39,000 from Vatican City which only has a population of 800

I love that ... I think Confused Grin

And given all the talk about the "ignorant, uneducated, knuckle dragging, racist, etc" leavers who are assumed to want to change their minds because they've been lied to ... what about the remainers who were also lied to by politicians desperate to keep their noses in the trough? Aren't any of those who demand a second vote worried that they may change their minds too?

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:24

I think most people now know that the petition was put up about a month ago by a leave supporter as it has been on the radio all afternoon and in the online newspapers too. That's why I said upthread that I'm almost surprised that another one hasn't been started.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:30

The only thing I really like about the EU is that we've had peace for an awfully long time. Now it just seems like we're a divided nation. Families, colleagues and friends are all bickering with each other about which way they voted, and those from overseas feel unwelcome. The atmosphere is absolutely dreadful.

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 22:36

Paris7

The fact that you've just written the reasons why you shouldn't vote answers your own question......as well as the fact you've been living there for over 15 yrs.....which is the rule.

If you have chosen to go and live in another EU country, that's your choice. You don't use British public services at all and have no ties at all to the Uk so I don't see why you should vote.

If the rules were that you could vote, then obviously I'd be happy for you to vote. It's a non question because you're not eligible to vote.

Paris7 · 26/06/2016 22:38

No Lottielo. I tried to apply for a postal vote but was refused on the basis that I have lived in France for more than 15 years. I'm far from being alone in this.
I doubt that it is constitutional or legal under British Law, I'm fairly certain that it's against European human rights and EU law. It's so morally wrong that I'm very tempted to ask for the referendum to be declared void. The EU are actually red hot on individual discrimination and injustice.

I'm sorry about your husband, it seems to me that England (as opposed to Britain) has behaved very badly over these basic democratic rights.

Itmight be interesting to challange it under Scottish Law, which is generally vastly wiser. Are there any Scottish human rights lawyers following this?

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 22:38

What's really made me laugh is that some of my friends have been harping on about now moving to Canada and Australia but they're Remain voters.....so they want the Uk to stay in the EU but rather than choosing an EU country to move to, they're opting for a non EU country.

Paris7 · 26/06/2016 22:43

Verbena 37.

What are you talking about! Why then do I have to pay UK tax? You can't have it both ways can you? I pay UK tax, I have the right to vote. Do answer that please.

user1466974831 · 26/06/2016 22:44

Within hours of the result the leave campaign admitted they lied. There was no extra money for the NHS, they couldn't say how immigration could be reduced and they had no plan for the economy. Leave voters were mislead and now regret their decision. They should sign this petition and reverse this disaster.

Buttercupsandaisies · 26/06/2016 22:44

Can anyone answer the following which I'm reading a lot of online-

As we movd out of the eu people keep saying immigration won't change? My understanding is that we would have to accept free movement as part of a trade deal but that's free movement to travel - not to work and claim benefits so in reality, being out if the eu will reduce numbers settling here surely?

Just wandered as it's come up a lot in discussions and admit in not sure who's got correct info

GreenishMe · 26/06/2016 22:44

I agree Lottielo, the atmosphere is awful and I'm genuinely saddened that people feel unwelcome now - I wish that wasn't the case.

I think the word 'racist' has been thrown about so much that 17.5 million people are now viewed as being officially racist. It's no wonder some people feel unwelcome.

Buttercupsandaisies · 26/06/2016 22:46

That's one hell of a statement - im pretty sure 17 million don't regret their decision! They'd be riots everywhere if we had another vote and all confidence in the entire system would be lost. Do we keep going til we get the result you want?!

That petition will go nowhere and rightly so as it can't be applied retrospectively. Are we then going to have the best of 3?

LineyReborn · 26/06/2016 22:47

Buttercup, it's free movement of workers. The same as now.

LineyReborn · 26/06/2016 22:49

Boris Johnson has just published that he wants to maintain intense relations with Europe. Plus free movement.

Tomorrow's Telegraph.

He doesn't want to pull the plug.

GreenishMe · 26/06/2016 22:51

Within hours of the result the leave campaign admitted they lied. There was no extra money for the NHS, they couldn't say how immigration could be reduced and they had no plan for the economy. Leave voters were mislead and now regret their decision. They should sign this petition and reverse this disaster.

Please can Remainers stop telling people how they think and what they should do? Smile

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 26/06/2016 22:51

The fact that the petition was originally started by a Brexiteer doesn't invalidate it FFS. It actually supports the point, that a decision this crucial should be carried by more than a 51% majority.

NoMudNoLotus · 26/06/2016 23:00

Paris I have seen that lots too.

O the irony.

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 23:01

Paris 7, sorry, yes. You're right I guess that if you're paying British taxes then you should be able to vote.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/06/2016 23:02

From Boris's (admittedly quite well written) article in the Telegraph: "they were also speaking up for democracy, and the verdict of history will be that the British people got it right"

Let's hope he means it ...

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 26/06/2016 23:31

This is making us out to be sore losers

I voted leave but I would still like a second referendum. I would probably vote remain this time round.

I know quite a few people voted leave as a protest vote because they didn't expect it to win.
