PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Lottielo does it not concern you how totally and utterly ineffectual the EU was when faced with a genuine crisis for a member state? They did nothing but illegal bailouts and punishing austerity.

That is who you want in control? They dont give a shit about ordinary people.

SMH.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:33

I dont like being thought of as a "poor little lied to leave voter" who didnt make an informed choice.

Ive been against the EU for a bloody long time and hoping for a referendum for at least a decade.

chicaguapa · 26/06/2016 21:34

Why are you all so sure remain would win again?

I can't speak for anyone else but I don't want a second referendum because I want to change the result. I want a second referendum because I want to know that the decision to leave the EU is based on a true representation of what coming out the EU means for the country. Not based on lies and false promises.

Then I will accept that the result of the referendum was a true democratic decision.

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 21:38

The petition is a total joke....thousands from the Vatican signing even with a population of 800 and the fact they're not even eligible to sign it......plus the other millions of signatures that are also from overseas and non eligible.

Asking for another referendum is just poor losing. Who is to say the result would not be almost exactly the same. What would the Remain lot do then.....ask for another vote?
What would be a much better idea is if the population government created something really amazing from the vote result and Great Britain became a truly great place to live.

chicaguapa · 26/06/2016 21:39

I don't suppose you do. And I'm glad you made an informed choice. How do you feel about those who didn't? Those who voted based on reduced immigration and more public spending?

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:43

How do you feel about those who didn't? Those who voted based on reduced immigration and more public spending?

The same way I feel about those who vote in general elections or any election without doing their own research and rely on manifestos that almost never happen.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:44

Do you lot honestly believe that over half the country didnt make an informed choice? Christ the arrogance.

NapoleonsNose · 26/06/2016 21:45

Just looking at the petition and clicked on 'get petition data (json format)' at the bottom of the page. It brings up what looks to be some kind of computer code (forgive me, I have no knowledge of this kind of stuff). A list of countries come up, with what I guess are the numbers of signatures from each of them, but more interestingly, a list of MPs follows with several prominent Leave names on there. Does this mean they have signed it or is it something else entirely?

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 21:45

NowWhat it does concern me greatly and I didn't like the way the EU was heading at all. But it has been a huge shock at how many people now feel that they've got a mandate to say whatever racist comment they want. I find it deeply upsetting that people from overseas no longer feel welcome here because of this vote and I'm sure a lot of other people must be feeling the same as me. I feel very sad.

chicaguapa · 26/06/2016 21:47

No, but I believe more than 4% did. Which is all it took.

NapoleonsNose · 26/06/2016 21:48

Ignore me - I've just realised that it the signature count per MPs constituency.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:48

NowWhat it does concern me greatly and I didn't like the way the EU was heading at all.

Good. We can leave now. Set a precedent and maybe a chance for reform since more than half the country spoke.

The immigration issue is bullshit. There have always been immigrants here and thankfully always will be.

CurlieWhirlie · 26/06/2016 21:49

Even if there were a second referendum and the majority voted in favour to Remain in the EU, this would not go down well with EU leaders. They have made it clear that 'Out is out' and they want us to go as quickly as possible.

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 21:50

Do you lot honestly believe that over half the country didnt make an informed choice?

It's patently fucking obvious they didn't.

I'd say about 5% made an informed choice. Disastrous, but informed.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 21:54

Agree totally Chicaguapa , that is why I would like another referendum. Besides, this referendum does not have any legal basis, does it? Surely it is just advisory and should be ignored because people were voting on lies.

Napoleon very interesting about some of the leave MPs names being on the list, unless they too are fraudulent.

MustStopAndThinkBeforePosting · 26/06/2016 21:55

Napoleons more interestingly, a list of MPs follows with several prominent Leave names on there. Does this mean they have signed it or is it something else entirely?

The website matches valid signatories to their constituency, once I'd signed the name of my MP appeared on my confirmation screen. The list of MPs is saying how many signatories live in the constituency of each MP named. Any signatories from non-UK addresses don't count towards the headline number of signatories - they are recorded but ignored.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 21:58

Napoleon just saw your post about it being signatures in the constituency. Sorry!

GloriaGaynor do you think that in the highly unlikely event the government said we are going to ignore the outcome of the referendum because we do not think it is in the best interests of the country, that the EU would still want rid of us? The EU leaders do seem mightily pissed off, that's for sure!

GreenishMe · 26/06/2016 22:00

I think the assumption that millions of Leave voters will change their vote now 'they know' is misguided.

Contrary to what's being said on here there are many Leavers who made completely informed decisions and are happy with their choice.

The Leave voters who have been slated by Remainers for being 'uneducated, working class and unworthy of a vote' (not my opinion) will presumably be "too stupid" to be scared off and will stick with their original decision.

In reality, whatever individual reasons Leave voters had for voting out, they were hungry enough and passionate enough to go out and vote for what they wanted.

Many Remainers were not passionate enough to go out and vote....complacency played a big part in Remain losing.

That's not a valid reason for a 2nd chance referendum.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:02

MustStop I read that only 350,000 of the signatures were from people living in the UK (can't remember where). Are you saying that all 3.5million are from people with UK addresses? I think it was The Guardian that said that some people are sharing their postcodes on social media and getting people from overseas to sign it.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 22:07

I agree GreenishMe

and we wonder why so many people felt their we're not being listened to and ignored and felt they were not import to the main parties

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:09

I think a lot of remainers thought they had it in the bag and didn't need to bother voting. I also think that more young people would have voted if they had realised just how close it would be. I really want to believe that the vast majority of those who voted leave would do so again because then I'd be happy to accept their decision. But my gut feeling is that a lot of people just voted as a protest against the EU and the government and austerity and are now regretting it, or will soon come to regret it.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 22:11

The author of the original petition has spoken: you've hijacked it for the wrong reasons. He wanted to make it harder for remain to win.

Grin

And you're all still signing it.

LineyReborn · 26/06/2016 22:11

Three and a half million.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 22:15

Oliver Healey says he started the petition "when it was looking unlikely that 'leave' were going to win, with the intention of making it harder for 'remain' to further shackle us to the EU".

But leave voters dont understand what they voted for? Fucking hell.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 22:16

I have to say Greenish that all those I know who voted leave are highly intelligent people and made a considered and informed decision. They are also thoroughly decent people who believe that this is the best way forward for our country and they may well be right. But from what I've been reading on here and in the media and from snippets I've seen on the TV, I get the feeling that a lot of leave supporters really believed the 350m thing and that immigration would be cut drastically. I also think that had remain won, Farage would have been calling for another referendum by now and that it should work both ways.Moving towards something knowing that almost half the population disagree with it is very uncomfortable.
