PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

You don't know mummymeister what I or my family have done in the past in terms of trying to make things better for this country. I have a disabled DC and have seen first hand the damage Government policies are doing, I have not and have never been complacent. You don't know whether/how active other posters on here have been in politics and/or the community.

Neither do we know how many signatures were on that petition before the referendum; do you think that even if there had been more than 100k it would have made any difference? We are entitled to trust our elective representatives to handle things and not make a dog's dinner of our country, as they have done.

NoMudNoLotus · 26/06/2016 12:06

Why don't those who sign the petition go & live in a dictatorship.

They clearly have no respect for democracy.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 12:09

Neither do we know how many signatures were on that petition before the referendum

What?

You are how many signatures were on a petition for referendum 2 to overturn referendum 1, when referendum 1 hadnt happened yet and no one knew the result?

Now I've heard everything.

time4chocolate · 26/06/2016 12:10

Maybe Nicola Sturgeon should have done her homework before she promised something she cannot now deliver on. The EU is not a free membership club, as we have found out to our detriment, where is the money going to come from to join, where will you get you contribution from to go into the EU kitty for the next Greek bailout or the financial contribution for the smooth entry of Turkey into the EU?

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 12:13

Signing a petition is part of the democratic process, everyone is entitled to sign a petition. And our options for leaving if not happy have just narrowed considerably haven't they?

Don't know what your point is 1983 sorry.

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 26/06/2016 12:13

Nowwhat the petition was started by a Leave supporter a month before the referendum took place, in anticipation of losing:

Pogmella · 26/06/2016 12:15

mummymeister why are you so obsessed by sports day?! Its an extremely patronising metaphor.

mummymeister · 26/06/2016 12:18

livingtothefull you are right I don't know and that is why I asked the question which you then singularly failed to answer.

I am not going to ask it again but perhaps you and all the others moaning about the referendum need to be asking yourselves what you are going to do in future to stop this happening again.

I have a DC with heart disease. I have no idea what that has to do with any of the questions that I asked. This isn't about government policies. I didn't ask you what active campaigning you had done in relation to them.

what I asked was, what did people do to persuade others to vote in, in the referendum.

As for the Scots, why do we suddenly think NS is any different from any other politician. what she wants is the EU to say yes you can stay in Europe on the current terms independently.

they are absolutely NEVER going to do this because of the Basques and other separatists groups.

if Scotland vote out of the Union they will go to the back of the queue with Europe and they will be left negotiating their own trade deals as a small independent country. anyone who thinks otherwise needs to swot up on their European history.

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 12:18

The principle on which the petition is based is correct - there needs to be a significant majority for either side. The political views of the progenitor is irrelevant.

Farage said the same thing himself.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 12:18

So they planned to throw democracy in everyone's faces a month before? Contingency plan in case they didnt get what they wanted at the expense of democracy?

And leavers are racist and Nazi?

Cjamm · 26/06/2016 12:21

It's probably been said already but the Lib Dems are now campaigning on a platform to stay within the EU, so if you want this decision to change, VOTE LIB DEMS , it'll be the first time I ever do but it's bloody worth it.

mummymeister · 26/06/2016 12:21

pogmella patronising to whom?

people just cant be bothered. all over the country voluntary groups are closing because of a lack of volunteers to run them and it is symptomatic of the apathy and "somebody needs to " culture that we have become.

Scout and brownie packs closing in our area because we cant get volunteers.

food bank opening times cut. PTFA's struggling.

I am sorry if you don't like real life proper examples but there we are they are all that I can offer.

Pogmella · 26/06/2016 12:27

But 3m people sign a petition to elicit change? You see what you want to see.

time4chocolate · 26/06/2016 12:28

The lib dem party numbers are on the floor they desperately need to rebuild their party so some bright spark as decided "I know a good way to build our party back up, lets announce we are going against the Brexit' Taaadddaa suddenly their numbers are up on the back of people's panic. Has no-one learnt anything over the years I do wonder about people naivety.

bumbleymummy · 26/06/2016 12:31

What are the lib dems going to do exactly?

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 12:33

I can't elaborate mummymeister on all the details of what I & my family have done in the past - dont want to out myself on here - but the short answer is, as much as I reasonably can given my life & family responsibilities.

Was I complacent prior to the referendum? No. Did I make my views known as widely as possible? Yes. Should we all consider what we can do to stop this ever happening again? Yes.

But we are facing chaos at the moment. Social media at the moment are posting that there are high levels of incidents/xenophobic comments against 'foreigners'. What do you suggest we do here and now?

If we should just put up and shut up as Brexiters are on the winning side and we should 'accept democracy, don't you think they should take ownership of the solution. Let them tell us their plan for a better future for our country & see if we can all buy into it.

Cjamm · 26/06/2016 12:39

BumbleyMummy, Lib Dems are calling for another general election, as early as next year & they've promised to either recall Article 50 if it gets triggered or to demand a halt to the triggering until after the GE, people, including me, seem to be believing them as their numbers have increased overnight

OrangesandLemonsNow · 26/06/2016 12:40

Let's look at the validity of some of those signatures

PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already
Cjamm · 26/06/2016 12:41

Rumours are running around that Labour wants to do the same, but want to remove Corbyn first as they don't stand a chance of winning with him in charge.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 26/06/2016 12:41

And there's more.

PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already
Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 12:53

And? For all you know some (not all) of these could be from Brits overseas….not disputing that some are likely to be fraudulent but no reason to believe that the majority are not genuine. It is a UK Government petition and as such is part of the democratic process, anyone eligible who wants to sign should sign it.

buttonfluff · 26/06/2016 12:54

Ignoring a government petition with over 3 million signatures would be a true travesty of democracy. This is a monumental decision that affects many, MANY more than the British electorate - who only won by a 4% margin. Many have now admitted to being uninformed or misled. And at least the petition gives voice to UK residents who weren't given a voice through voting - like 16/17 year olds, for example.

Democracy invites us into conversation about legal and governmental issues that affect us. The referendum was never meant to be a decisive end to the issue, and the petition is a means of communicating that a significant chunk of people are unhappy about the Brexit deal as it stands. Of course if there were to be a second referendum won by a convincing margin, the result would be accepted more readily. But if we were supposedly complacent before, that's definitely no excuse for complacency now.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 26/06/2016 12:56

nowwhat as has already been stated, it was a Leaver who started the petition a month prior to the referendum in anticipation of a Remain win.

It's not 'sore losers' attempting to 'subvert democracy'. It's the leavers, pre-emptively trying to discredit the results, and succeeding. As seems to be a theme on the side of the leavers, some have asked for something and now are furious they have it!

OurBlanche · 26/06/2016 12:58

Not really. For many of the reasons already mentioned.

At best, 3 of 16Million people have signed the petition and you want that to reverse the results???

And don't place too much trust in the 'many have changed their minds' thing either.

OK, so the repeat confirms the result. But if it doesn't? Best of how many would please you?

But you are right about complacency... can the real politicians please step forward?

Madbengalmum · 26/06/2016 13:02

The biggest joke is than 39,000 from vatican city have signed the petition, yet only 800 people live there!
