PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Where was it - Ireland? Holland? - where they had a 2nd referendum about the Maastricht treaty (?) because the first didn't deliver the 'right' answer?

Ireland

But there's nothing wrong in wanting to give people a second chance to let our government know what we want them to do and to make sure that what we are going to do is absolutely what the majority of the public wants.

But there is something wrong with having a second vote, most people voted for what they wanted and the result is what we have like it or not - that's called democracy. Both sides of the campaign lied - they didn't so much lie but neither side knows what's going to happen now. The world isn't going to fall in because we have voted out though so we need to give it time to see how things work out.

Pogmella · 26/06/2016 08:37

Greenish you felt that valentine couldn't respect the (older) experts but not the older voters. The difference is in their level of education in constitutional law, economics etc. To anyone offended by my statement that most Leave voters are less qualified than most remain voters, it is statistically accurate. I am a typical remainer, a graduate

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 08:51

You cannot take half the country in a direction it does not want to go, through such seismic change, that cannot be undone, on a majority of 4%.

Half the electorate oppose the decision.

That's not democracy.

This is not like an election, where if you oppose the result you can change it at the next one. This cannot be undone.

A significant majority in this country have to support it.

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 08:58

Democracy is not a religion, creed or cult.

It's a system of government.

It's not something to believe or put your faith in like a dogma, ideal or spiritual belief. It's simply a practical method for organising power. It's highly flawed, it's clunky and it doesn't always work.

AnnaForbes · 26/06/2016 09:03

Only 20% of signatures from UK addresses. Thousands from Vatican City despite less than 500 residents. Loads of tweets offering a uk postcode to anyone overseas to use. It's fraud.

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 09:03

If we backtrack on this now we will have to creep back with our tail between our legs meaning we will be in a situation with the EU far worse than the one which the voters have just rejected. Ever increasing union anybody?

We are going to have to go back cap in hand to the EU anyway. If not now, in 10 years when it will be far more humiliating, the terms will be far less advantageous, and we will have far less power from which to negotiate.

kistanbul · 26/06/2016 09:23

Where are people getting those lies about the majority who signed the petition not being from the UK?!?

The data is on the petition page. 2,401,768 of the 2,930,073 who signed are from the UK. That's the vast majority.

Please stop spreading more lies.

mamamea · 26/06/2016 09:44

"Please stop spreading more lies."

Stop signing a petition that should have closed before the polls opened.

Surferjet · 26/06/2016 09:44

The EU don't want us, they're actually glad to see the back of us as apparently we were always a pain in the arse - don't go crawling back to the lover who's on tinder within 5 minutes
dignity people.

Imbroglio · 26/06/2016 09:59

I think that the EU is desperate not to have Europe fall apart over the summer with further calls for referendums in France etc while Britain dithers. They want to make an example of us.

A lot will be being discussed behind closed doors over the next few weeks - Camerons resignation was the price paid for more time.

BungoWomble · 26/06/2016 10:03

The one I might sign actually is the one calling for London to go it alone. I have seen commentaries before suggesting this, for all these big cities, in an age where the only thing that seems to matter is proximity to the capitals. It would help to rebalance things a little because they'll have to negotiate honestly with the hinterlands for water, energy and food as well as other resources. Given that in the north of England many of us would prefer to form a new country with Scotland anyway if they go independent it might well be the best way out of this mess.

shazzarooney999 · 26/06/2016 10:20

3,004,896 now!

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 10:20

I also have to say that the people I see screaming the loudest on facebook signing petitions left right and center are those who had no right to vote in the referendum in the first place.

You simply cannot trust these petitions.

PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already
AnnaForbes · 26/06/2016 10:24

All you need to sign the petition is access to the internet. You can sign up as many times as you like, with as many names as you like. The only check is a tick box declaring you are a UK citizen. No proof needed.

Numerous screen shots on Twitter of people offering use of their postcode to people overseas and of people signing multiple times using different and fake email addresses. Anyone who seriously believes all signatures on the petition are authentic needs a reality check

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 10:27

Also as I said further upthread: 16 million people voted remain and only 3 million signatures now, many of whom will not be legitimate.

Most people in face who voted remain do NOT want another referendum.

Now ENOUGH!

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 10:28

*in fact

Why arent there the exact number of signatures now on that petition who voted remain?

Exactly.

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 10:37

Most people in face who voted remain do NOT want another referendum

That's bollocks for a start.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 10:41

I think signing the petition shows the strength of feeling about this, so people should sign if they agree with it whether or not it will succeed. The petition is still open, it is a UK government petition, people are entitled to sign if they feel strongly about this.

So opinion polls tell us that most people who voted 'remain' don't want a referendum….well we have seen how reliable opinion polls are.

I don't doubt that some of the signatures are fraudulent but doesn't mean that many/most aren't legitimate too.

And no it's not 'enough'; I am heartbroken and furious about the prospect of the further damage to be done to this country. I am absolutely livid that it seems there was no plan at all from Brexiters as to what to do following a Brexit decision.

For example it seems that no thought at all was given to what Brexit could mean for the peace process:

www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/english-nationalists-have-placed-a-bomb-under-peace-process-1.2700068

Thank you very much Brexiters, you have led our country to an abyss (with plenty of help from the Tory government) and you don't have a clue what to do now do you?

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 10:42

Peace process in Ireland that is.

infernalhullabaloo · 26/06/2016 10:42

"the people I see screaming the loudest on facebook signing petitions left right and center are those who had no right to vote in the referendum in the first place. "

You can tell the eligibility status of people by seeing what they post on Facebook? Amazing. Or more stale, predictable nonsense with a desperate whiff of condescension.
