PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Why not get the people in the eu involved aswell, maybe they could put pressure on their own Governments & they in turn get Merkin Merkel to order cameron to allow another referendum, so the remainers to win. Hmm

BTW the above is sarcasm.

GreenishMe · 26/06/2016 00:14

Experts generally hold degrees though, Greenish. Unlike Leave voters.

What does this^ have to do with my comment about ageism Pogmella?

Do you have a degree btw?

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 26/06/2016 00:14

This terrible referendum has torn our country apart.

Deeply, deeply saddened 😞

AnnaForbes · 26/06/2016 00:16

This petition is all over twitter. Most of the signatures aren't valid.

AnnaForbes · 26/06/2016 00:19

Fucking stupid comment. Experts generally hold degrees though, Greenish. Unlike Leave voters.

I have three degrees including an MSc. Please stop with the lazy abuse, it's pathetic.

Surferjet · 26/06/2016 00:24

If this petition succeeds they'll be civil war.
I guarantee it.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 26/06/2016 00:42

Surfer I agree. Then the question will be:- Will the eu "step in" to save us from ourselves at a huge cost to ourselves.?

GloriaGaynor · 26/06/2016 01:03

There will be civil war (well not literally) if the vote does not succeed.

This country will split apart, and as the consequences begin to kick in, the Remainers will be furious with the leavers who fucked the country, and the leavers will be bitter and blame the politicians who lied to them.

If the vote succeeds we save the county despite division. If it doesn't we're divided, the country's fucked and we lose Scotland to boot.

So a re-vote is the lesser of two evils.

infernalhullabaloo · 26/06/2016 01:24

"Tell me exactly where I'm being fucking racist."

You've been told twice, I can tell you for the third time.

You accused Polish people of being dishonest by manipulating a petition. You did so with zero proof.

That's the third time you've been told that your post was racist, I have no idea why you are making yourself look even more stupid by continuing to deny the fact you're a racist twat.

beetroot2 · 26/06/2016 02:11

You really need to move on and accept that a democratic society voted out of the EU. This will not be overturned no matter how you try.

WeMustSurelyBeLearning · 26/06/2016 02:12

I thought that poster saw posts from her polish friends on FB inviting their relatives who live in Poland to sign the petition? Wtf, how is that racist? She is relating something that she does have proof of and has seen with her own eyes - the posts on facebook.

beetroot2 · 26/06/2016 02:17

The country is not "fucked" by the way.

The leavers (me included) did not "believe" the lies. I have eyes and ears, am of pretty sound mind. Dementia hasn't set in either.

What absolute hysteria when all that's happened is the majority has decided to leave a "project" that hasn't worked.

Kummerspeck · 26/06/2016 02:23

There are 2 big flaws in this

  1. I have read that the petition is, apparently, not all it seems as IP addresses show some people have signed more than once and many are not eligible to vote

  2. If we backtrack on this now we will have to creep back with our tail between our legs meaning we will be in a situation with the EU far worse than the one which the voters have just rejected. Ever increasing union anybody?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 02:49

I will not sign this petition I believe in democracy

I would support a legal challenge to the leave campaign and go from there

But I am sure they have everything covered so likely to be a waste of time

BungoWomble · 26/06/2016 03:17

Another remain voter not signing that petition. Can't think that it would help right now. What do you want, best of 3, best of 5?

I've been saying for years that social divisions are widening and cracking open. The referendum hasn't caused them, it's merely brought them to the fore. Congratulations bloody Tories and their fucking stupid irresponsible demonstrably wrong "austerity" aka inequality/elitist-and-don't-you-dare-dissent agenda.

BungoWomble · 26/06/2016 03:18

...and New Labour too, before anyone says.

beetroot2 · 26/06/2016 03:48

I agree Bungo. We need a whole fairer structure in this country and that is what has come to the fore. Capitalism crept in and tried to make London elite. Its not. The rich got richer, more arrogant and thought they were untouchable, the working class became poorer, the sick and vulnerable have been made to feel like leaches. Hopefully now it will get better.

The EU and the government have been "legally" corrupt for decades.

We have a bright future now. Or at least a more honest one.

Peppatina · 26/06/2016 04:16

That's the third time you've been told that your post was racist, I have no idea why you are making yourself look even more stupid by continuing to deny the fact you're a racist twat.

Ah welcome back Solomon.

Decide to change your username did we after getting all your last posts deleted for being a huge bigot?

You are making yourself look a tad unhinged - though perfectly proving that there were extremes and unthinking stereotyping on both sides of this referendum.

Even if we don't get a second referendum, the more people who sign, the more known it is that people are feeling very worried and frightened about leaving the EU. It's a message from us to the government.

And some people have asked if we would be doing this if we got the result we wanted. Well no. Unless choosing remain caused the economy to die on its arse overnight and for me to find out I'd chosen remain to get a rainbow fairy staircase to heaven in my city centre that turned out to be a total lie, in which case I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to ask my new opinion.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/06/2016 06:37

Just because petitions have been signed from overseas doesn't mean the person isn't eligible to vote.

They could be signing while on holiday or away with work, or they may be a British citizen that now lives overseas and is still eligible to vote - I know at least 3 people in that situation.

VulcanWoman · 26/06/2016 06:53

A vast majority of the signatures on the petition aren't valid.

crossroads3 · 26/06/2016 06:55

What absolute hysteria when all that's happened is the majority has decided to leave a "project" that hasn't worked.

I think people will realise how much the project did for us once we are out.

The EU and the government have been "legally" corrupt for decades.

Agreed that there is corruption at EU level, but the baby has now been thrown out with the bathwater.

I don't see the referendum result making this country any less corrupt - we are about to get a further to the right PM with no mandate, at the head of a government which already only has a mandate of 36%.

IMO the changes need to start with a change to our voting system.

Imbroglio · 26/06/2016 07:44

A vast majority of the signatures on the petition aren't valid.

Really? I'm sure many are not, but 'the vast majority' - hardly likely.

chicaguapa · 26/06/2016 08:15

The concern is that the UK could be about to undergo a major change based on voters' misunderstanding about what they were voting for.

It's not about whether the result went the way you voted or not. Everyone believing in a democracy should agree that for it to work fairly all voters should have access to the correct factual information to make their choice. If you believe that wasn't the case it's not unreasonable to ask for it to be run again.

It's easy for Leavers to be so gung-ho about coming out of the EU regardless because they feel it's the right thing for the country to do. But the Remainers, who believe it's the wrong thing to do, would like to exercise a little caution and ask if everyone still feels the same way now we all know a little bit more about the consequences and what isn't going to happen.

Perhaps some Leavers also want another chance to vote too, now that new information has come to light, so it may not all be Remainers who want a second referendum.

Lord Ashcroft's poll cited leavers' primary reasons for voting LEAVE as those above ^^.

If they are based on voters' genuine beliefs and not due to misinformation (supposedly cutting immigration, Turkey poised to join the EU) holding a second referendum may bring about the same result anyway and Leavers have nothing to worry about.

But there's nothing wrong in wanting to give people a second chance to let our government know what we want them to do and to make sure that what we are going to do is absolutely what the majority of the public wants.
