If you're Welsh and voted Leave, Why?

Cjamm · 25/06/2016 11:09

I was really surprised by the Welsh vote, Wales has really benefited from being in the European Union e.g

Swansea University's new Bay Campus was only possible because of the £40 Million from the European Structural Funds which came from a finance package of £60 million from the European Investment Bank.

The National Waterfront Museum, which includes a gallery, exhibition and library, benefited from £3.7m of EU funds when it was constructed.

5.8m of EU funds was made available for Quadrant Intermodal Transport Centre, led by the City & County of Swansea, which replaced the outdated and rundown bus station.

£9.6m EU funds were invested as part of Neath Port Talbot Regeneration project which included schemes to help make improvements in and around the town centres as well as a purpose built Community Enterprise Centre.

  1. When you voted did you not care/consider about the financial benefits Wales receives from the EU?
  1. Do you think Westminister (that only cares about London/SE) will honestly make up the funds instead?
  1. Was it really immigration and if so why? Was it fear of job loss/overcrowding or was it the refugee issue on the mainland. Do you really believe immigration can be capped/slowed down just because we're leaving the EU?
  1. The EU army is not a legitimate answer, it doesn't exist & it never will!
  1. Are you worried at all? This doesn't mean you regret your choice but are you worried about the economy or the possible breakup of Great Britian? Did you expect that Scotland/N.Ireland might leave because of the vote?

I'm in north wales Smile

Everyone I know and have spoken to voted for Brexit (including myself).

A lot of my friends are also farmers who get subsidies via Eu and they still voted out. And no...we're not all racist thickosWink.

Cjamm · 25/06/2016 20:29

But why Nettle? What made you vote Brexit, are you not worried about the cuts heading your way?

OP posts:
downright · 25/06/2016 20:31

Nettle why bite the hand that feeds you?

You voted for unemployment and dried up subsidies, and you've got fuck all immigration!

You're hardly a net fucking contributor! (I'm talking about N Wakes not you personally)

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 20:34

No I'm not worried.

Apart from the Airbus factory in Broughton we don't get bugger all compared to South Wales via the Eu.

Honestly if all the farmers think they'll be better off without any subsidies,I'd be inclined to agree with them.

downright · 25/06/2016 20:35

So what do you think you'll achieve by being out?

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 20:37

Immigration was never an issue for me!Confused

downright · 25/06/2016 20:39

You say "apart from Airbus" so flippantly. Do you think Flintshire can absorb 4000 job losses?

I mean, I suppose it's also got the ...... industry [insert relevant industry once you think of one]

The farmers have been on their knees for years. Give it five years there won't be any left.

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 20:43

Apologies, I didn't mean for my post to come across as flippant.

Yes it will be shit if Airbus closes, but really,it's had threats of closure before.

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 20:44

Also I think this is great news for the farmers...the ones I've spoken to are very optimistic Smile

ShatnersBassoon · 25/06/2016 20:50

Nettle, what exactly do you imagine will be the benefit to you and your family? I mean tangible benefit, not just that you think you're 'making Britain Great again', or some such guff.

downright · 25/06/2016 20:52

It's had threats of closure which those in the local community have fought against

They haven't tried to frigging close it down themselves!

So what's the benefit?

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 20:55

Woah.

I never said anything about 'making Britain great again'....please don't put words in my mouth.

Captainkanga · 25/06/2016 20:55

I'm Welsh and voted remain. Everyone I know and work with are completely devastated. I only know two people who voted leave and one of them did because of "those money grabbing Syrian immigrants" Angry when we actually explained to her some basic points about the EU she was worried to the point of tears.

Im appalled at the complete ignorance of people like her. I placed my vote mid morning when everyone was at work, but my polling station was filled with old people loudly bragging about the voting leave. There was a very frail gentleman there on oxygen and in a wheel chair accompanied by a ( EU national) care worker shouting about how he was 92 and proud to be keeping his future safe from immigrants. His future.

I'm truly saddened and embarrassed to be Welsh at the moment but I'm angry at all the generalised insulting backlash tarring us all with the same brush.

My generation do not want this for ourselves or our children Sad

chachaboom · 25/06/2016 20:58

My family voted out, all because of immigration. And the best bit, they're referring to ones with brown skin, not even the ones from bloody Europe. And yes, they're low educated Daily Mail readers.

I know 2 well educated professionals who voted out, one to stop the foreigners taking jobs in his sector, the other couldn't give me a reason.

I voted in as I know how much EU money we receive (shit loads) and we won't see a penny if Westminster is dishing it out. I can't believe how short sighted everyone's been regarding this.
And I think the Waterfront museum is great.

ShatnersBassoon · 25/06/2016 20:59

I know you didn't say that, Nettle. I'm trying to steer you to a concise answer that might make sense to those of us who are perplexed.

What, exactly, do you imagine will be the benefit to you and your family?

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 21:00

Regarding the Euro funding:

In years to come, when other poorer countries join the eu (Macedonia,Serbia) it's doubtful that we'd have qualified for funds anyway...so we would have lost it regardless

neolara · 25/06/2016 21:02

Nettle - why are the farmers happy?

NettleFarseer · 25/06/2016 21:02

It will make no difference to my family.

None of my family work in the public sector

MintyChapstick · 25/06/2016 21:03

I live near Airbus, and it employs so many people in the surrounding areas. We're talking a 20 plus mile radius, it would be a disaster if that were to close.

Believe me the deprived estates in the North get so much from the EU. Even our school milk is from an EU incentive ffs!

Staggering fucking ignorance yet again from the leavers!

downright · 25/06/2016 21:03

Is that really why you voted leave? Really?

downright · 25/06/2016 21:05

Because eventually (when? If? In thirty years time?) Macedonia join the EU (wtf?) you think the area might get less money then?

And you don't think it makes any difference really?

I'm absolutely stuck for words

downright · 25/06/2016 21:08

So you're not going to complain when 4000 people lose their jobs? Or your house price drops off a cliff? Or there's a recession and more lose their jobs? Or when Boris becomes PM? Or when the pound plummets and companies leave in droves?

You don't care at all about those things? You're more bothered about Macedonia? Can you find Macedonia on a map?

Captainkanga · 25/06/2016 21:09

Nettle - what a self obsessed shortsighted reason.

I'm a public sector worker, my job won't exist when we leave. My entire career will be ruined. Your flippancy really fucks me off.

Good luck with your farm though yeah Hmm

ShatnersBassoon · 25/06/2016 21:12

Wait, what?! Do you know what the public sector is? You think only those working in the public sector will be affected?

MintyChapstick · 25/06/2016 21:14

One of my Facebook friends runs a farm and was devestated yesterday morning. She thinks farming won't be sustainable without EU support, and she's very worried about her childrens future.
