To be apppalled by the remain camp attitude

On my FB feed, social media, TV we are being berated for voting leave, we are being called racist, thick, uneducated, stupid, poor, peasants, benefit scroungers...the list goes on. There is even an petition now to have another referendum because obviously the leave camp know absolutely nothing.

Boris Johnson was whisked away by the police when he left his house this morning as protesters were ranting at him, banging on his car. How is this democracy? why does it only run one way? Yet you cheer at this act of aggression.

I would understand if the vote was closer but it was not close, leave won by well over a million votes. Why cant you accept the results and look for a way forward together, why have a "me vs them" attitude.

I've been appalled by some of the things I've seen today by my fellow remainers

I am as well. It doesn't sit well with me that half the country are being dismissed as uneducated, ignorant racists.

There seems to be a growing trend towards some sort of liberal orthodoxy, where it is not acceptable to voice an opinion other than that with which the Guardian would approve. In many circles it's not even considered socially acceptable to even admit you voted Conservative at the last election - yet many people must have done, as they won a majority.

As a Remain voter, I believe that the decision to come out of the EU is fundamentally flawed. As a fervent believer in democracy, I believe we have to respect the result of the referendum.

Most of all, I am saddened that this country seems to be so divided now. Because, for better or worse, we have to work together to build a post-EU country, in whatever form that might take. We can't do that if we are too busy calling the other side names.

We've had governments who have partially reformed the House of Lords, another government may go further. Why would this be down to 'Leave people' anyway? And why did you assume I was 'Leave'. I simply said what was good about leaving, I didn't say whether I thought it was worth the cost.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 16:58

'Farage told the Mirror: “In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way. If the remain campaign win two-thirds to one-third that ends it.”'

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 16:59

Why would this be down to 'Leave people' anyway?

Because the Remain people know that the House of Lords will still be there come the nuclear apocalypse.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2016 17:00

It's nothing to do with liberal orthodoxy.

It's the fact we have been shafted and forced to endure very right wing leadership and a likely huge recession that has pissed us off.

lastminute1 · 24/06/2016 17:00

The leavers see the EU as a gravy-train of highly paid jobs for unelected cronies

Well now they're going to have an unelected PM. Congratulations.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2016 17:01

Which would be easier to bear if people had sound reasons for doing so but many people didn't even have the faintest idea of the implications. If people knew the facts fair enough but so many just thought they'd get a council house easily etc. Grim

BertrandRussell · 24/06/2016 17:01

"I simply said what was good about leaving,"

And I pointed out that you already can. With the exception of the House of Lords.

MrsChrisPratt · 24/06/2016 17:02

Yeah, thing is though, we all know Farage is a tit Mitzy...and I think if leave had lost he'd have been shouted down, another referendum wouldn't have been allowed. The longer the uncertainty the worse it's going to be. We could have another referendum but it wouldn't be hugely democratic and I think perhaps it'd be better to accept, plan and make the best of it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2016 17:02

And I wish there was a trend towards it not being socially acceptable to voice certain opinions, it's the other way round.

blaeberry · 24/06/2016 17:03

You mean 'Remain people' have no ambition for political reform?

lastminute1 · 24/06/2016 17:03

To all calling this the result of "democracy": is it democracy when you have a man who owns half the media in this country and some people THAT IS ALL THEY READ.

I know it has to be accepted Chris but it doesn't mean I have to be demure in my acceptance. The country has been fucked up the arse and it will continue to be fucked up the arse. And I will continue to be angry for a long time. And no 'woe is me' thread from a Leave voter is going to change that.

neenienana · 24/06/2016 17:05

Is it because London is a vibrant multicultural city and has been for years? They recognise the importance of integration and realise that immigration is not the issue.

MrsChrisPratt · 24/06/2016 17:05

What's your alternative lastminute? Not let those people vote? Or state controlled media? Because as far as I saw, there was plenty of published information and expert opinion on why we should remain.

lastminute1 · 24/06/2016 17:05

I am surprised that brexiters expect the remain supporters to just pipe down, especially when they have essentially been robbed of money, employment, identity and freedoms.

Well said.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 17:06

Good point lastminute. I forgot to spit some bile at that toad Murdoch today. Not like me to neglect him.

daisychain01 · 24/06/2016 17:06

because nearly half the country will be deeply unhappy the whole way through the next few years of negotiations

today we effectively have no PM, no leader of the opposition, general uncertainty, the pound is plummeting, no one has a plan

And? Come on, so are millions of people really going to sit around, miserable as sin and catastophise about this change for the next 2 or more years. Really ???

Me, I'm getting outside in the sunshine. (I voted to Remain, but honestly I've tried, and I've tried, and ..... nope ..... I really can't find what there is to get so het-up about it.)

albertcampionscat · 24/06/2016 17:07

You're right of course, OP. There's nothing to be gained and a lot to be lost from calling 48% of voters stupid or evil. A lot of good, smart people voted leave. But it was a monumentally stupid and damaging thing to do. I have no right to hate the sinner, but every right to be angry about the sin.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 17:07

I really can't find what there is to get so het-up about it.

Don't worry. It will present itself to you soon enough.

daisychain01 · 24/06/2016 17:08

I bet the Kinnocks are clicking their heels in glee.

All those years on the Brussels gravy-train - yayyy in the bag!

lastminute1 · 24/06/2016 17:09

MrsChrisPratt the alternative is an individual/corporation should not be allowed to have this much say in a country. By not being allowed to own almost all papers. It's not healthy. This has always has disastrous results in other countries.

daisychain01 · 24/06/2016 17:09

Sure it may well do. And when it does, I'll deal with it then.

Cos, you know, it may never happen.
