Brexit

The weather is on the side of the people

Chucking it down in the East of England. Storms last night. Senior Remain campaigners phoning in minute by minute weather updates to Brussels. To say there is despair among the elite is to do the English language injustice.

Brexiters were out in force, soaked to the skin, some were being carried to the polling booths. As we said "good morning" to each other, there were mentions of "Independence Day" with laughs and winks.

Some Brexiters looked to the Heavens as they chucked down rain upon us and smiled. The Heavens were on our side.

Andrew Neil tweets

You Gov poll gives it to remain on basis of polling today. It's equivalent poll on general Election Day was wrong.

Widespread mood among Westminster classes that Remain has won. But they don't have ear to the ground

No one really knows yet, but I think the giveaway is how smug and confident the stooges look on TV, so I think Leave will probably lose. It will probably be close, but not quite enough.

Ideally the Establishment does not want the vote too close. They would prefer a Scottish type result, the old 55%-45% as that would allow them to claim enough of a margin. A 52%-48% is a bit close and Brussels would like a better result than that or it might encourage other countries to have a go at referendums themselves.

That's why I'm a campaigner, not just an online ranter. Getting out every vote you can makes a difference.

claig · 23/06/2016 22:43

Dimbleby asks Tom Watson "do you know something we don't know?" and there is laughter all around. Marvellous stuff.

'That's why I'm a campaigner, not just an online ranter. '

You're in London. That isn't where it is decided. You can't campaign everywhere. But it is clear they all know already.

so Brexiters are now getting desperate and hoping other countries will hold a referendum?

claig · 23/06/2016 22:48

'so Brexiters are now getting desperate and hoping other countries will hold a referendum?'

No, it is inevitable that other countries will do that. Even if we lose, it won't make a difference. All it will mean that our political class managed to stave off the end of the EU for a while longer, but this is really the end of it, it will just take time before another country ends it.

Political class? Are Kate Hoey, Johnson, Gove, Grayling not part of the political class?

claig · 23/06/2016 22:51

If we lose, then the torch of Exit will just pass to another country. What will happen in our country is a change in our national politics. If the EU unveils all its new plans etc, then that will affect our parties and people may switch to different parties.

Ghostoffrankgrimes.. just like the Daily Mail, Telegraph Sun and Express and their owners aren't part of the Establishment.

'Political class? Are Kate Hoey, Johnson, Gove, Grayling not part of the political class?

Yes, they are all the political class. The majority of the political class were for Remain and if they succeed, they will have delayed the EU breakup. How they seem to know so early as in Farage and Boris is anyone's guess.

The Establishment and Brussels need a big victory in order to save the EU a bit longer and to discourage other countries from having referendums.

If Brexiters do not except the likely outcome we will have a very fractured society. It will be the British people who lose as the political class will play the divide and conquer tactic to get their own ends.

I feel sorry for those who put faith in the likes of Trump or Brexit thinking they are "socking it to the man" or taking an anti establishment stance. In or out, Clinton or Trump - its two cheeks from the same arse.

claig · 23/06/2016 22:57

Farage has unconceded.

bit flaky isn't he? Grin

claig · 23/06/2016 23:07

'It will be the British people who lose as the political class will play the divide and conquer tactic to get their own ends.'

I think what we will see is that the political clas is not really divided and that they are all in it together and they will try to paper over the cracks and continue business as usual. The problem for them is that the people will probably look for an alternative to business as usual and that is where UKIP would gain, but I think Farage will step down so that will help the Establishment.

Yes, strange that they are not interviewing Farage as he is much more important over this issue than Tom Watson et al

I am watching BBC. Is Sky better? Which one usually does a better job?

I didn't need to campaign everywhere, just where the Remain vote is strongest.

shinytorch2 · 23/06/2016 23:12

Andy Burnham ( great eyebrow shaping and neat eyeliner) on ITV saying " we understand why labour voters might have voted leave and we need to look at free movement "...... He can look at it all he wants but he's powerless to do anything about it. Wasn't that the point - Shame he's called all his former supporters racists and bigots.

claig · 23/06/2016 23:14

Absolutely, shinytorch2. The same old words by Burnham et al Spin, spin and more spin

claig · 23/06/2016 23:23

'OMG what the hell is this Amber Rudd on'

Absolutely, the polls have just closed and we are back to the old politics, the spin, the nonsense, the loud voices talking at breakneck speed to hide the vacuousness of the whole thing.

Dimbleby was right that it won't be easy to go back to business as usual and Carswell made some sense before he lost it again by saying that politics has seemed like a "cartel".

OP posts:
smallfox1980 · 23/06/2016 23:28

Why can't the EU reform? It has changed an awful lot in different directions since its inception in the 1940s.
