Brexit

Why are all the twats voting leave?

Me being one of them probably Blush

I can't find the list I saw earlier, but it's been playing on my mind all day.

It was a list of remain supporters - there was the Bank of England, the IMF, 99% of economists and big businesses, all the non racist newspapers, Steven Hawking, all unions, most councils, Obama etc etc

And a list of brexit supporters. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, the leader of ISIS, Vicky Pattison out of Geordie Shore Hmm

I'm sure I want to leave. I've started, read and engaged in very interesting debates on MN and elsewhere that have led me to this decision. I'm not saying it's clear cut, but I certainly don't think it's an obviously foolish vote to make. So why are the majority of influential and intelligent people voting remain, and the twats of the world voting leave?

Maybe it's just pre match nerves. But I can't help but thinking if all these geniuses reckon remain is the way to go, I've probably got it wrong.

Thoughts?

There are plenty of poor but intelligent people who don't blame the forriners for our lack of cash and will vote Remain.

The campaign has had a strong emphasis on immigration - which may be one issue but there are many other issues where policy is unclear:

  • will there be a major recession like 2008/9 caused by the uncertainty of years of new trade negotiations? Job losses? house price crash?

  • many companies trade extensively eith the EU and they will be thrown into uncertaintly for several years while new trade deals, tariffs and tolls are discussed - so may struggle to get new orders

  • Many non-EU countries that set up businesses in depressed areas of Britian to give then an ability to sell in the EU - such as Japanese cars etc- may move production out of the the UK to other EU countries

  • New trade arrangements may lead to higher costs of consumer goods/food imported from the EU

  • will there be a run on the pound? This will make travel more expensive this way

  • Will free movement be maintained? If not there will be the most of visas to go on holiday and residence permits to live in the EU

  • free moment is not longer guarenteed - but noone knows what the new terms will be. People may not be thrown out on Friday but longer term issues of employment/residence visas and healthcare/social care arrangements may lead to workers returning home to other EU countries and British pensioners possibly leaving Spain/France.

  • the goverment has not met its targets for immigration from outside of the EU. This is totally within government/national control. I heard Boris talking about increasing immmigration from India and Singapore - so not sure if the have a plan

  • Some industries have become very dependent on the cheaper workforce from the EU
  • crop picking for minimum wage - will unemployed british workers fill these roles or will food costs rise in the shops?
  • many nurses and carers in health and social care come from the EU - will they stay? - they certainly don't earn the £35K that the government demands for non-EU workers to get a visa. Are there alternative staff to fill these roles.

Is it a coincidence that many politicians that support Brexit have previously advocated more privatisation of schools and healthcare service? Will their win mean shift in policy?

  • Educational exchange programme for students such as ERASMUS will not longer be open to British kids to study as EU students at other Universities

Of course the economists predicting that there will be severe economic repercussions are the self same ones that failed to predict the global economic meltdown. It's all guess work.

Hubris but it's nearly split 50:50 EU to non EU immigrants coming to the UK, we could have already adopted the Australian system for non EU immigrants, but haven't so what makes you think the Referendum will change that? Also with the government willing to grant non EU immigrants visas at the same rate, What makes you think that the government will slow down EU immigrants?

Actually Dulce even the guy who predicted the recession has said we face one possibly if we leave

... Because twats are always looking for a scapegoat and easy answers. and will still blame someone else when it all backfires.

If only experts know the right answer it should never have gone to referendum.

Most of the Remain voters are wealthy with vested interests.

Lots and lots of Labour MPs what out but can't say it.

I think in a decade we will look back and wish we had the chance to escape. There isn't enough discomfort with the current position.

I'm hugely out and a left leaning liberal. I'm clearly a dickhead

My DH is in as, in his words, he isn't really bothered either way...

You think 60% of the country is wealthy? And has "vested interests" (like what exactly)?

These comments gte stupider as you get more desperate.

I hope to be able to trade more freely with the massive rest of the world without being constrained by inward thinking EU trade controls.

Why exactly would leaving the EU help you to trade with the rest of the world?

Report
Justchanged · 23/06/2016 08:49

Indeed. The Leave comments are 'other' blaming conspiracy theorists. The EU is China's largest trading partner. all the UK needs to do is make products people want and we can sell them. And being part of the world's largest trading bloc can only help.

Logic all supports Remain.

The Remain vote is the right wing vote. Absolutely.

Corbyn himself wants out but can't say it!

Come back on here in ten years time, post collapse of the Eurozone and all that entails. Then let's discuss this referendum again. I respect your decision to want to stay. My view is long term and the EU is dead. You can mock all you like - let's see what happens ok?

Lots and lots of Labour MPs what out but can't say it.

Nothing to stop them saying it at the next election, getting into power and processing the paperwork to leave the EU the next day.

In the meantime you have 4 years of conservative government to look forward to and the Labour party isn't looking electable any time soon.

Some Labour MPs have vocally supported leave. Nothing to stop lots more doing what my Conservative MP has done refuse to say which side she supports.
I really don't believe most labour MPs support Leave secretly.
Lots of people I know who support remain are highly intelligent and definitely not rich (not even higher rate taxpayers).

Making sweeping generalisations about either side is disingenuous. My friends and family tend to be well educated, mostly left of centre. Some are in and some are out. There's no pattern.

My mum's voting leave but she isn't a twat!! It's her vote, so only she can decide what to vote her.
