There can be respect on the surface but simmering resentments and secrecy beneath. Obviously UK politicians aren't above that either, but they will generally debate robustly and openly in the Commons, and actually I think trading insults openly is rather better than the "secret, dark debates" favoured by Juncker.

Yes, languages, nationalities and personalities are fascinating, but that doesn't make the EU parliament automatically better. The fact that 28 varied countries are taking part isn't always in the best interests of the UK.

you're mixing up the parliament debates with how Juncker operates on specific issues. Also 28 varied countries with all ranges of political colours. A lot of democracy going on.

And surely part of being professional is talking with respect rather than the old boys banter we get sometimes in the UK, which tends to attempt to shut down anything they don't want to hear. finding this argument pretty odd.

feeling like you're arguing for the sake of it - ie it's the EU so must be all bad. right so MEPs tend to respectfully debate things, oh that's bad because maybe underneath they're pissed off etc.

The EU is itself full of elites and "old boys", as well as being heavily influenced by large corporations who constantly lobby them.

I actually think that robust debates are respectful because each side knows the other is strong enough to give their opinions too.

This country may find itself with proportional representation in the future, and conversely the far right is gaining ground in the EU so it might not be the utopia you think you see for long. Then what? We can't vote out the MEPs from any of the other 27 countries, or any of the unelected Commission.

yup true.
I disagree that debates in the house of commons are respectful. robust debates can be ..
who said utopia? just that some of the other criticism doesn't stand up.
