sorry its the EU.

i don't know that much but my gut feeling is we should stay.

however i think we will leave because strength of feeling seems to lay with the leavers wheras i think stayers might beless likely to vote or be in the not that fussed camp.

I don't think a decision like this should have been put in the hands of ordinary people, we vote for and pay our politicians to do that. Maybe I don't believe in democracy but to quote the late great George Carlin 'think how stupid the average person is, then realise half of them are stupider than that.'
Like pp said, either way it's an unknown quantity. With more countries joining, Turkey is my main concern if we stay.
If we leave what will happen to health and safety, human rights and workers rights, the EU protects us in these areas. Not to mention maternity leave and pay.
I'm undecided and need to do more research but I'm leaning more towards stay.

Hassled · 17/05/2016 19:56

A lot of the Brexiters I've spoken to think we should leave because they think that will make us less of a terrorist risk. I don't see that Isis will give a flying fuck if we're in Europe or not - I can't imagine it will make an iota of difference to them, and the only difference will be that we'll lose the ease with which we can share intelligence data across Europe - we'll be more vulnerable, not less.

Lilaclily · 17/05/2016 19:57

I think we should stay
People, e don't seem to understand they'll one free health care when they're holidaying in Europe
If you've had an accident in a non EU country , you'd know how expensive it can be

BlueJug · 17/05/2016 19:58

I travelled all over Europe pre EU - I can't see why I won't be able to "roam" without it

mollie123 · 17/05/2016 19:58

But voting to remain does not quarantee that the status quo will prevail in Europe Hmm the EU today will not stay the same in 10 years time
Look how it has changed from less than 10 countries to nearly 30 in the past 41 years. Its ethos has also changed. Governments in this country can change at the will of the people - how do we change the EU or our relationship with it?

Lilaclily · 17/05/2016 19:59

Also our universities will suffer through lack of EU funding, research grants etc etc that in itself will have a massive impact on the economy, less jobs more unemployment, no clue why people would vote to leave

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 17/05/2016 19:59

If we leave what will happen to health and safety, human rights and workers rights, the EU protects us in these areas. Not to mention maternity leave and pay.

I think the stay campaign are using this as a scare tactic to get people to vote to stay.
Do people really believe that these rights and benefits will cease if we leave?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/05/2016 19:59

You know different Brexiters to me Hassled, I haven't seen terrorism given as reason to leave. I agree with you, that's very short sighted of them if that's the reason.

Lilaclily · 17/05/2016 20:00

Also if we vote to leave it'll take years to sort out, better to try to improve the present and near future imo

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 17/05/2016 20:04

How can we improve the present when we have no real say in EU policies (as citizens)?

jillyarmeen16 · 17/05/2016 20:04

Mollie surely we have more control over what happens to the EU in the coming years if we are a part of it? If we leave we will have no say in who joins etc and it will still have an effect on us.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/05/2016 20:05

How do we improve our own future Lilaclily? It'll be out of our hands.

HumphreyCobblers · 17/05/2016 20:06

My main reason to leave is the undemocratic nature of the EU, the way it can change the rules and we have no say, the fact that it has not signed off the accounts for YEARS, the fact that those in control have not been elected.

It really baffles me that these issues are dismissed by so many tbh

But having said that, I know there are positives to staying and negatives to leaving. It is complicated and not at all clear cut. But I tend towards leaving as I really do believe in democracy. It might be flawed but I am not up for the alternative.

BornFreeButinEUchains · 17/05/2016 20:06

Those people saying

" I think we should stay"

Please read this post " jillyarmeen16 Tue 17-May-16 19:54:53" just up thread.

You are putting your future into the hands of people like this poster, who think YOU are too THICK to make sensible decisions.

Do you want this?

BMW6 · 17/05/2016 20:07

I think the vote will be close, but will be to stay in - and I think we will live to bitterley regret it.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 17/05/2016 20:09

BornFree just what I was thinking.

bertsdinner · 17/05/2016 20:12

Id like to leave but I think we will stay.

GetAHaircutCarl · 17/05/2016 20:12

We'll stay.

Funnily enough I was reading something recently that said 86% of people who supported UKIP will vote to leave!

I mean what the fuck? Are the other 14% undecided? Or too busy?

If they can't be arsed, then what about the rest of the population?

katiekrafter · 17/05/2016 20:13

BillSykesDog
The left has very successfully waged a campaign of intimidation and suppression of other viewpoints which conflict with theirs. They have made it socially unacceptable to voice certain views. But they haven't actually stopped people holding them.

This.

I want to leave but haven't told family or friends which way I will vote because it's not worth the grief I will get.

BornFreeButinEUchains · 17/05/2016 20:14

It really baffles me that these issues are dismissed by so many tbh

I have been plodding through " Our Island History" with DD.
Its very present to me, as we read about one despotic king, plundering the masses, using us for personal selfish gain, to another. Even after Magna Carta.

We are only at Henry VIII Shock.

We have hard won freedoms in this country. Very hard won freedoms.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/05/2016 20:16

BMW - me too. And a PP relaying that referendums will be banned in the future chilled me. I think that's the direction staying in the the EU will ultimately become, more like a dictatorship. For eg I hate the way our fisherman aren't allowed to fish the sea around our island but other eu countries are. It's crazy and wrong.

I think the EU will eventually implode and it will be very very nasty. Too many different countries wanting too many different things. And the right wing is on the rise.

morbidhamster · 17/05/2016 20:19

I think we should leave. Originally I was voting to stay but after lots of research and wider reading, on balance, I'm voting to leave. I think the result will be 'stay' though because the media bias is heavily weighted towards this.

TattyCat · 17/05/2016 20:19

You are putting your future into the hands of people like this poster, who think YOU are too THICK to make sensible decisions.

Nope. Now that we are able to vote in or out, I'm actually quite fearful of staying in. But I think there will be a consequence either way.

cardibach · 17/05/2016 20:19

Several people now have said 'the left' has intimidated people over this, making them unwilling to admit to wanting to leave. The left? You are all aware that out incredibly right wing PM is in favour of staying, yes?
Also I don't understand why people think the EU is undemocratic. We vote for MEPs - if you don't like what they do, elect a new one. The EU is run by the MEPs. They are democratically elected.

BlueJug · 17/05/2016 20:20

I think we will stay as people are afraid to leave. ( Agree with pp 55/45 to stay).

Remain people imagine we will suddenly lo.se all our rights. Our laws won't suddenly change back to 1975 laws!!! The rights will stay - unless we vote to change them. At least we can vote to change them - which we haven't been able to do for years now

In fact the real problem is what is going to happen if we stay. I agree that the EU is getting scary. (Taking on Russia over Ukraine FFS, joining forces with Turkey even though we know their leader is dangerous..)

I hope we do leave. I think others will follow. If we stay I fear for us in 10 or 15 years time.
