Well said Springing. If the EU isn't listening to the UK now, why would it after a remain vote?

Winterbiscuit · 08/05/2016 22:08

"If we want to export to the EU we will need to comply with EU safety standards."

And if they want to export to the UK they'll need to comply with ours.

Cameron's deal may not be as 'water-tight' as he would like us to think it is.

www.cityam.com/234652/david-camerons-eu-deal-is-in-legal-terms-not-worth-the-paper-its-printed-on

Joshua Rosenberg raised some doubts:

More explanation:

fullfact.org/europe/explaining-eu-deal-it-legally-binding/

Seems the former vice-President of the ECJ has his doubts as mentioned in this transcript

The full fact thing seems to suggest I'm right that it is covered by international law.

The others are speculation, and I've read opposing views to them.

So international law covers the main part of the deal and the vulnerable bit is the emergency break on in work benefits to EU migrants.

lurked101 · 08/05/2016 22:18

"And if they want to export to the UK they'll need to comply with ours."

Of course, but as the thing you have trumpeted seems to be removing regulation, its likely that their products would be produced to higher standards so would pass anyway.

Removing regulation we don't need, not all regulation lurked.

SpringingIntoAction · 08/05/2016 22:25

The deal the EU did many years ago was also supposedly covered by international law - but it was subsequently over-turned.

So he has no 'special deal' at all.

The Tories will be annihilated by the electorate when finds it they have been lying to them.

Can't wait.

BBC pressure leads Paxman to bin article criticising EU

"Jeremy Paxman has withdrawn an article critical of the European Union from a forthcoming issue of Radio Times after coming under pressure from the BBC."

lurked101 · 08/05/2016 22:35

Which is because of the impartiality question, you could only say it wasn't if they replaced it with a pro EU one. They allow platforms on programmes to both sides.

Winterbiscuit · 08/05/2016 22:42

The BBC showed the pro-EU film "The Great European Disaster Movie".

Now let's see whether they are impartial enough to show "http://www.brexitthemovie.com/ Brexit: The Movie".

Winterbiscuit · 08/05/2016 22:43

Brexit: The Movie

Yukduck · 08/05/2016 22:46

LEAVE.

Pull up the drawbridge! Secure our borders. Tell the EU we can manage our own fishing, farming and centres of industry and business thank you very much without their quotas or restrictions. We can trade with other countries without being in the EU.

We repelled the Vikings and Roman empire fgs. Time to repel the EU.

butteredmuffin · 08/05/2016 22:47

There really should be a facepalm emoji on mumsnet.

lurked101 · 08/05/2016 22:47

It might not, but it has given a platform to Gove, IDS, Farrage and Boris over recent months.

I think you'll also find that Paxman's programme will probably give a pro brexit slant.

lurked101 · 08/05/2016 22:49

Seriously?

We repelled the romans and vikings? Um, I think you need to learn history rather than engaging in political debate.

Chalalala · 08/05/2016 22:52

I'd be curious to know what proportion of the electorate could precisely explain Cameron's "deal" and the nature of the concessions he got. I doubt it will have a significant impact on people's decision to vote Remain or Leave.

(Surely its main significance was to provide Cameron with the political excuse he needed to campaign for Remain, which is what he always intended to do anyway because he realizes it's by far the better option.)

SpringingIntoAction · 08/05/2016 23:01

I doubt it will have a significant impact on people's decision to vote Remain or Leave.

People have forgotten about it already. I've not heard it mentioned since just after it was struck.

Its been mentioned on several threads as a response to those who are scared of ever closer union. The exemption for which is under international law not possible to over turn through the European Court.

The ones that are challengeable are the ones that relate to freedom of movement.

Yukduck · 08/05/2016 23:08

Ok Lurked you found out my uneducated underbelly! I am not an expert on politics, but I am very proud to be British, and don't get the same feeling from being in the EU. We ARE an island and we can't escape our long history of defending our shores.

The EU is too expensive a club with too many rules, quotas, laws and restrictions. Like communism it does not fit the human psyche.

Winterbiscuit · 08/05/2016 23:12

Like communism it does not fit the human psyche.

Very good point Yukduck.

Chalalala · 08/05/2016 23:18

Well I must have a very inhuman psyche then, along with many of my British friends. Kind of cool, I guess? Grin

SpringingIntoAction · 08/05/2016 23:20

Well said YukDuck
