Why do they refuse to take their shoes off?

What is it with the older generation, that they absolutely hate taking their shoes off in people's houses? My parents are late 70's and never take theirs off, if I suggest it they look uncomfortable and just ignore me. Same with MIL who will occasionally do an awkward check of the soles of her shoes before carrying on through my house wearing them. My 4 year old has been brought up to always remove them in our house or anyone else's, so he'll occasionally ask me why nanny doesn't take hers off, which is difficult to explain, giving that the real reason is that they don't give a sh**

Seriously though, what's with the lack of respect, especially when they can see everyone else doing it.

Difficult to explain my arse 🙄

"Because Tommy, Nanny doesn't want to/it's more difficult for her".

The end.

I'd also add, grown ups don't have to because they don't climb/crawl over the furniture (sofa/beds, etc).

It's partly generational (I''m 64 and do as my host does), it's partly class, it's a bit precious.

My mother and MIL always brought their slippers. DH and I take our slippers to theirs and close friends' and vice versa.

If we were hosting or attending a stand up party, we would not expect shoes off.

I can't remember the last time a tradesman didn't offer either to remove shoes or use shoe covers.

Generally, I'm not that fussed either way but I respect the wishes of the host.

none of our family wear shoes in the house and I always ask people to take their shoes off. Someone who has walked on city streets covered in spittle and dog shit or vomit is bringing those germs into the house .

I think if the hosts aren't wearing shoes than usually they expect their visitors (if possible) to remove them. What annoys me is those that wear shoes in your home, but don't in their own.
