My son can't get an apprenticeship and is getting violent and moody

My son is strugling to get an apprenticeship at 20 and his mental health is deteriorating

Firstly he is not a bad kid never touched drugs or drink. He was bullied alot in school as he is autistic and he claims because of his hight however despite this he got ok gcses (6s and 7s)

And tried alevels however dropped out because of further bullying and because he found the course uninteresting. He then spent around 2 years travelling to see his then girlfriend from Bournemouth

At 18 they broke up and he did a pt qualification at level 2, did boxing and got a part time job at a pub after alot of difficulty. However he quickly spiraled into an eating disorder and decided he can't continue down the gym Instructing route.

Since turning 19 he's been looking to get an apprenticeship in "anything not behind a desk that pays well" however has had no joy with the exception of an assessment centre .after being told he didn't get the job because his team lost after no one listened to him. he punched one of the people in his team outside the event out of frustration. I have since gotten him anger management and told him this is not acceptable.

He is now 20 still looking for one, he has started driving lessons to aid in this however he has become even more moody and withdrawn. He barely sees his friends as they are all working 9 to 5 and he works evenings and weekends. Compounding this I believe could be that his dad is terminally ill with hypertension of the heart.
Furthermore earlier this year he started seeing a new girl who within 3 month slept with one of his mates. Currently all he does is apply for jobs and work out for an unhealthy amount of time . I'm not sure how to help him.

How can I help him

He needs counselling and you need to stop seeing him as the victim and perpetuating the delusion in him. Accountability is a huge part of growing up.

Forklift truck? Can’t image most Amazon pickers have one.

Standard warehouses nearby. Tesco,aldi e.g

He's willing to go back to college and admits he's at fault for his sod ups but the college hasn't got anything till next September

Most workers don't use forklifts in warehouse work.
With somewhere like Amazon it's people picking individual items to be boxed up.
Boring job - but usually steady regular shifts.

WiseHiker · 11/08/2025 20:26

I called him out on wasting 2 years ever since he's been trying to correct himself

Picking and packing don't however most want experience

That probably didn't help to be honest.
But it's happened so not much you can do.
You and him need to draw a line under that and the concept of him "going to college" (he's too old now) and the idea of a "career" - focus on a job. He needs a job.
To get him into a routine and to earn money so he can focus on his non-work life as being enjoyable.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts he can do the basic qualifications to get a CITB Labourer Green Card online within days. My son did them very recently.

We are phoning the college to enquire about this

They aren't going to expect everyone to have experience. Everyone has to start at the beginning at one point.

He has said he fears being trapped in a minimum wage job and wants more for himself he hates learning but is willing to otherwise he will be left behind by his friends and get in with a bad crowd. He's already in that predicament being that all his mates are going on holiday without him

You would think but on indeed it always has prior experience listed as required

You don't need to phone the college. You can do it online. My son did the full course in 4 hours. I gave you a link up thread.

Warehouse/factories/distribution centres usually pay more than minimum wage.
Sorry (I hate to say this) but both you and him seem to making excuses.

Plus apprenticeship wage is minimum wage at first.

reflectiv · 11/08/2025 20:41

@WiseHiker Here is a copy of what I posted previously ...

For the CSCS Green Card, which is the building industry's passport for unskilled labouring jobs on building sites, you first need a Level 1 award in Health & Safety (from an approved list) and then you need to pass the CITB Operatives Test. My son has just got his green card. He got:

  1. "Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in the Construction Environment" with The Builders Academy for £109.99. It's an online course, which he did at his own pace in less than a day, then scheduled the exam for the next day. The exam was multi-choice, online and was proctored.
  2. CITB Operatives Test for £22.50 at a Pearson Vue test centre. Beforehand, he also paid about £7 to download the CITB app so he could do practice tests, but he found the multi-choice test very easy after having previously done the Level 1 course. If you stay in the industry you have to re-do this course every 2 years to renew your green card.
  3. The Green Card itself from the CITB website. This cost £36.

He would be getting a qual out of it which is more important also here's proof they want forklift

@WiseHiker I assume that advert is for one particular job in the warehouse. Not everyone will be doing that same job.
There will likely be numerous different roles.
Obviously not all those roles will be advertising for staff at the same time.
As I said earlier in a couple of months they will likely want seasonal packers etc.

He's also applied for picker packer jobs previously while looking for an apprenticeship and was rejected on them grounds but I will tell him to keep an eye out

Well obviously a fork lift operator will need a forklift license! There are other warehouse workers that won’t need that.

If you say where you are people will be able to help find courses. Is there anywhere offering city&guild diplomas?

A qualification is only worth having if there will be a job at the end of it.
A lot of apprenticeships are (to be honest) 2 year "fillers" for 16-18 year olds to cover the "education or training" rule.
If he is serious about an apprenticeship he needs to research the availability of jobs in that trade in the area.
It's all very well training (for example) to be a plumber but if in your are there happens to be 100s of plumbers all fighting for work - then he's unlikely to get much work.

He doesn't need to "keep an eye out" - he should be checking job sites every day.
