I am relieved to see that the Surrey is also looking at options to expand class sizes and use transportation to take children to other areas. They really need to get their act together quickly.

all children has a right to state education.

Surrey runs out of state school places for private pupils as VAT raid bites

Surrey County Council has admitted it does not have enough state school places to accommodate children transferring from private schools, following the government’s introduction of a 20 per cent VAT levy on independent education.

It's not surprising.

Labours policy on private school fees are the politics of envy.

I have pulled my child from private school and quit my job as a consultant, I am now home educating, and I will not pay tax to these idiots.

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 13/12/2024 16:24

Well, they will just now have to squeeze the children in - or pay for taxi to neighbouring counties. The state has an obligation to provide free education for everyone, so let them do it!!

Presumably you have some other source of income?

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 13/12/2024 16:29

sometimes one income is sufficient it you are extremely careful overall and have no school costs. Depending on how much the other parent earns and how much benefits you are entitled to, I think it definitely is an option.

We have thought about it - but are doing state school and reduced hours for now.

I have a limited second income, but I will be living off of my savings as well.

twistyizzy · 13/12/2024 16:43

The best one I've heard is that 1 council are now paying the fees to send several kids back to the Indy schools they were pulled out of due to VAT, because there simply aren't enough state places in their area (secondary schools).
If only someone had forwarned Labour that this could be the case......oh hang on!

Nope it’s a policy of raising tax. Guess the price is now just too much for you to afford, it was always like that for some other people.

I've never understood the reasoning behind the 'politics of envy' idea. Is the 'politics of knowing your place' preferable? Answers on a postcard to Ludicrous Claims By Supposed Former Private School Patrons Central.

I have seen the correspondence. I'm part of the largest parent lobby group so have plenty of evidence thanks

I will be very surprised if that's true!

A policy of raising tax that will cost as much to implement as it raises. If only Labour had spent the years in opposition doing due diligence etc. Then they may now not be facing 3 separate English legal challenges + 1 Scottish one.

Which LA?

@twistyizzy - how about providing the source?

You don't get it do you?
So Labour have lost the income tax from a consultant + NHS lost a highly trained professional. But hey that's all fine using Labour economics

The consultant left their role through their own free will, labour economics did not force them into that decision.

Yes it did, VAT on school fees! A Labour policy which incidentally makes the UK the first country in Europe to tax education and goes against the agreed principle of zero rating ALL education for kids

I mean the PP may well have been an NHS consultant but their post doesn't actually make this clear. They may equally have been a private medical consultant or even a consultant in engineering, recruitment etc.

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 13/12/2024 17:13

@twistyizzy - you can be a consultant in lots of different fields of employment not just the NHS

How did it?
VAT on school fees meant that the poster could no longer afford those fees (like the vast majority of the population).
VAT on school fees do not mean that she could no longer work for the NHS.
