Why do Jewish schools need protection?

Rishi Sunak has just promised 3 million pounds to protect Jewish schools in the U.K. I find it horrifying that there is a need to do so. What sort of vile creature would target Jewish children?

It would be good if this thread could stay within the confines of children missing school because their parents would rather keep them at home. There are loads of threads to discuss the wider political issues, which these children have no part in.

Absolutely tragic that any child's education should be disrupted due to fear. I heard the headteacher of Messorah Girls school (one of the ones closing today) on the radio this morning and he was keen to point out that they are not fearful, but parents would prefer their dc not to attend school today. The Jewish School Trust advised that all schools should remain open.
Jewish people in Britain have been victim of antisemitic attacks long before these things were ever recorded. The 'Islamist' threat is being used as diversionary tactic. @Brrrrrrrrrrrr the "beheaded babies" claim of Biden has now been retracted by the Whitehouse. There was no evidence of this claim whatsoever. It hasn't stopped the Western media and tabloids from repeating it though.

You're talking as though the fears of these children and parents aren't based on anything.

Oh sorry this was not my intention at all, I was just quoting what the headteacher of one of the schools said in an interview.

It’s horrendous. Hamas are appalling. Nothing whatsoever excuses the brutal massacre of Jewish civilians, and of course Jewish civilians need protecting. There is nothing to celebrate in what has happened. Jewish children living in London are entirely innocent of any wrongdoing and should be able to go to school safely.

However, I find Israel’s corrupt, extremist coalition government horrendous also, along with its response which more or less blames Palestinian civilians in Gaza for the behaviour of a terrorist group. Israel is a democracy and chose to elect a leadership who would clearly happily have Palestinian civilians murdered in their name, so Israelis had some agency in their unpalatable leadership. On the other hand, Gaza has not had any democratic elections for years, is incredibly densely populated with a majority very young people (close to 60% under the age of 25) and Israel’s leadership is apparently willing to sacrifice this massive and trapped civilian population in a bid to get at Hamas. How is that excusable either? Given Israel knows how vile and dangerous Hamas are, how can it criticise Palestinian civilians for not having kept a violent, undemocratic terrorist organisation under control?

It does not take a genius to see that extremist views exist on both sides and that attempting to destroy a terrorist organisation by appearing willing to murder civilians in your turn is not the way to go. Current Israeli leadership wanting to legalise incursions into the West Bank by Jewish settlers has also been unforgivable. Israel decided not to take the moral high ground when Netenyahu and his coaltion were elected, and its choice of a “hard men” has only increased its vulnerability in the long term by losing it any particular moral high ground.

Unfortunately racial and religious discrimination/hatred is about the oldest and most vociferous thing in the world. I went to Jewish school abroad some 30 years ago and remember doing security drills / hiding under the desks on a weekly basis.

One of the very sad but apparently inevitable side effects of anything at all kicking off in the ME, regardless of the rights or wrongs, is an increase in antisemitism around the world. It makes me think that it is quite widespread, and that people are just waiting for an excuse. Bit like any other form of racism really.

Not just in the ME.

Remember 9/11? There were loads of, "no Jewish people went into work that day", "dancing jews".

Lots of conspiracy theories involve antisemitism.

David Icke seems to think everyone who isn't a lizard is an "ultra, ultra zionist".

I'm ashamed that children in this country have to have security like this, I'm glad that they do get protection, I just wish they didn't need it.

Oh this is so sad and awful

JustAMinutePleass · 16/10/2023 14:07

Should point out that our local Hindu faith school was attacked because the local population believes Indians and Israelis are in cahoots & as there are no Jewish schools nearby the Hindu ones get attacked. Local mosques have been attacked, muslim children wearing caps threatened, and an upcoming Hindu festival has been cancelled because there’s a risk of attacks. The far right is definitely rising

That is so awful. Children coming to school with the doors smeared in red paint to look like blood. What a horrible horrible thing.

Ridiculous that they would need this level of security. Appalling that they are targeted
