Help please!! Foul play, teacher marking work fraudulently

I would like some advice on what I should do. My DD is in Y5, they have finished their end of year tests for Maths and English. The teacher had lost a few of the children's test answer papers, so he has given one of the children the opportunity to do the test again. However, my DD has observed the teacher providing the child who had to do the test again with the answers. Now unsurprisingly, this child has scored 140 out of 140, this child also happens to be the 'teacher's pet'. Where do I go with this information?

OP posts:

Well, she has asked a few other children from other schools and they have all had the same comprehension test, etc

Why would she even bother to do that? But, if she did, it's likely that a number of schools have done last year's Y6 test as a practice paper.

I know the score of the other child, as the teacher had announced it to the class and made a point that the child achieved the top grade.
Whilst this is only Y5, but this is the standard end of year test that children in all schools complete.

If this is true then think about how that child will fare at a later date without that extra help. Once they move up the school, into the next school, at college or Uni, at work. That teacher won’t be able to help them cheat for a lifetime so just concentrate on your child and supporting them.

yodaforpresident · 01/07/2023 13:30

Are you talking about the GL progress tests? I have only ever heard of these being used in prep schools but I'm sure that some primary schools might use them too. I think they are marked out of 141 though.

Tulipvase · 01/07/2023 13:27

I think the standardised tests in year 7 are out of 140? Would private schools do a similar test?

Not that I think the OP should be doing anything about it, even if true.

They're are no standardised tests in Y7 either. At primary it's SATs (and the phonics and times tables test), at secondary it's GCSEs and A-levels. Everything else is up to the school/MAT.

Sheruns · 01/07/2023 13:31

My mistake, sorry. 12 years as a primary teacher and I'm STILL getting this wrong! 😂

What standard test? I'm a primary teacher. There is no standard year 5 test 😂

ApocalypseNowt · 01/07/2023 13:32

Ok. I told the dog Warden and he tapped the side of his nose and said "We are aware".

There is no national standard test in Y5! The fact that you are doubling down is hilarious. Next you'll be saying you don't live in the UK... 8/10 for effort though.

ChangeIsInevitable · 01/07/2023 13:35

Or they’re a grass.

Nobody likes a grass.

Nah, people should be encouraged to 'grass' more. It doesn't mean they should be believed hook, line and sinker without proper investigation but all these 'snitches get stitches' bs is why bullies and criminals get away with so much and why our politicians all stick up for each other (unless there's something to gain by not doing so) while they're robbing the country.

If you see someone doing wrong, say so - this can't be said enough.

Blueblell · 01/07/2023 13:35

You sound very Ill informed about this but if it is true (which seems unlikely) then it is the child has been given the answers is the disadvantaged person here, not your DC. Forget about it

BillieShears · 01/07/2023 13:35

Log it with 101

Oh ok, just going by my sons last report which had results with a standardised score out of 140. I was impressed as he scored 125 in the science and English tests and that would nearly put him in the top 2 % but presumably that is just his school then? Obviously still pleased though.

yodaforpresident · 01/07/2023 13:37

There are standardised tests available for primary and secondary age children but they are not compulsory.

Nice stealth-boast.

Susuwatariandkodama · 01/07/2023 13:39

Firstly how reliable is your child? And secondly, why do you care? It’s just Yr 5, these tests don’t mean anything other than giving the school and parents a rough idea of how the children are performing academically.

Quinoawoman · 01/07/2023 13:39

TM80 · 01/07/2023 12:41

Well, she has asked a few other children from other schools and they have all had the same comprehension test, etc

There are companies out there that make 'end of year tests' but they are certainly not statutory. Just coincidence that you daughter's friends had the same ones.

If your daughter cares enough to be outraged that someone might receive help and talk about the content of the tests with her friends, I would argue that this school's leadership are far too concerned with testing, assessment and academic excellence. This pressure is normally passed on to the teachers and the children and can, sadly, lead to people playing fast and loose with the rules. Ade Adepetan did a documentary on it a few years ago - the conclusion was that there is far too much high-stakes testing in primary schools. Sadly, the government has just added to the statutory testing since then.

You can rest assured that in Y6, schools receive surprise monitoring visits to check that everyone is following the rules. I know because I used to be one of the monitoring visitors and once reported a school for maladministration of the Y1 phonic screening check.

Thanks, glad to have pleased.

HoppingPavlova · 01/07/2023 13:39

If this is true, why would you actually care? Surely, an eye roll would do it, and then just move on with life? It’s Year 5, not a leaving exam.

Sausage1989 · 01/07/2023 13:40

So your daughter grasses her mates up?? Shocking behaviour.

PlasticOrchid · 01/07/2023 13:41

Inkpotlover · 01/07/2023 13:25

My OP teaches Y5 and he reckons a test where you'd give out a score of 140 would take hours to sit and mark! So I'm calling bullshit on this.

Standardised scores can go as high as 140. The test will probably be out of about 40. We do NFER tests termly in our school - they are just another stick for the MAT to beat us with.

Not all schools do end of term/end of year tests, most do but not all. Also there are many different assessment schemes schools can buy. These are only used to support the teachers judgement, they are certainly wrong to cheat however this will have no effect on your child.
If you feel you need to report it, do so to the head. But it really is a non issue the yr 6 teachers will realise very quickly the results are inflated and this will then point back to the yr 5 teacher.

HighEndGrifters · 01/07/2023 13:43

Meanwhile in Ukraine.

yodaforpresident · 01/07/2023 13:43

That sound like GL's PT tests @Tulipvase which are in maths, english and science. My DD's school does these at the start and end of the year but we are never given the results as it's for the school's own tracking purposes. They are standardised against 100,000 children so should give you a good indication of performance against a national average.

Thank you.

That makes sense as my older two are at the same school but we weren’t told their results, so sadly I can’t gloat about them.

So what are the end of year tests?

There’s end of year progress in English, progress in maths tests that every year do that’s out of 140. I’m in n.Ireland. It’s is unfair but apparently lots of schools cheat on them which is a bit pointless as it doesn’t mean anything except show the school themselves what progress the children have made, so they are only fooling themselves.
