Anyone knows when do we expect results to be sent out?
My son had an interview in mid January and I’m excited to hear from them.
Don’t want to chase the school 😉 so I was wondering for any advice here
Thank you

@Roses81 no such thing... and its not even 11 yet.

We received an offer to our choice of house today but I’m unsure if we will accept @yukkim .There will be lots of other parents in the same position, some at our school are still waiting for Eton before they decide. We are in London and quite a few ( including us) also received offers from Queen Elizabeth Barnet ( a Grammar School) for year for year 7. I would say the majority on the reserve list at Winchester will get a place, best of luck to you.

Many thanks for your kind words.

I've been a bit fearful of posting this question in an open forum but how do parents feel about recent negativity around Winchester? And any thoughts on the new head mistress? I am pretty confident that we will accept our offer but trying to gather as many perspectives as helpful to make sure we are making an informed decision. I hope my question won't make this board spiral ...

Underthelavender · 04/05/2023 10:50

I am worried about it to be honest @RaspberryCake. Also I have heard through the grapevine at our school that some parents (and boys) are unhappy. It’s such a big decision and something doesn’t feel right for me.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 04/05/2023 10:55

In your positions, I would ask to speak to the new head. It always all starts at the top. There is nothing wrong with asking to speak to the head directly when making such a big decision. I am sure a school like this will make time for you to reassure you. And if they don’t, you have your answer.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 04/05/2023 10:57

@Underthelavender - if your DC is at Pilgrim’s, I would be worried. If not, and there are just a few boys going every year, then I would not listen to the rumour mill. And I would definitely not listen to threads on Mumsnet.

Underthelavender · 04/05/2023 10:57

That’s very good advice @Intergalacticcatharsis .

parent1709 · 04/05/2023 11:10

@Roses81 they are sending the email out house by house and they still have five houses to go. So relax, take it slow and let the good times roll.

WilsonGick · 04/05/2023 11:21

@RaspberryCake , it's worth remembering that you don't have to make a irreversible commitment until the autumn term of Year 8, when the contract is signed and the deposit becomes due. So you can accept your DS's place now and still have plenty of time to see how the school is settling into the changes and get a feel for the new head.

FWIW, DS will be starting at Winchester in September (all being well with the entrance exams he's sitting this week 🙈), and we like the sound of the new head, who seems a good balance of a new broom and someone with an understanding of WinColl from her previous experience there. DS's house is one which has taken girls for the first time this year and the housemaster's feedback on how this has gone has been very reassuring.

We are put in Winchester waiting list. Dose anyone know the possibility to get the offer and how to make it?

Many thanks

@yukkim I'm very positive the list will move and additional places will be offered.
I'd suggest you write an email to the Housemaster and show your interest.
It might be worthy asking your current school head for the feedback in case WinColl did not explain in the Wait List email. They will definitely reply to your school.
I always believe in being genuinely interested helps
good luck 🍀 ❤️

@WilsonGick - good luck to your DS. What is the point of still running Year 8 exams when they already went through an intense process in Year 6? Just more hassle for the boys and the school.

Westminster scrapped Year 8 exams for Year 9 entry. They know who they want. Or is it because Winchester can’t really tell from ISEB and a short interview?

Friends with kids at these schools say Year 8 exams are just a formality but is it not just unnecessary extra pressure on boys when they are doing GCSEs just a few years later?

parent1709 · 04/05/2023 11:53

We are on the Waiting List and will be sitting the Y8 Winchester test.

WilsonGick · 04/05/2023 11:54

Thanks, @Intergalacticcatharsis . DS is pretty chilled about exams so not too much extra pressure, and the rest of his year group are all prepping for CE in June anyway. I think (hope!) it is mostly a formality, but will also be used for setting certain subjects. I agree as a practice it's on the way out, though (while DS was revision over Easter I did have a tiny tinge of regret for turning down other offers which weren't conditional on any Y8 exams...).

So I called admissions … was told yes it’s being done by the house secretary …. Still no email . Tired of multiple screen refreshes so I think it’s time for a coffee break

AryaHL · 04/05/2023 12:15

Keep the faith! Stay on the waiting list, reaffirm your commitment just before important dates (autumn term of Y8) and if all else fails you can still go for election

parent1709 · 04/05/2023 13:18

@yukkim we are on waiting list and I am actually happy about it and have assumed that he will eventually be offered a place. I don't believe I am being unrealistic or overly positive. Senior schools have huge swathes of multiple/duplicate applications. Be prepared for nothing to happen for year or so.
