Hello everybody, starting a thread for parents with children who have applied for 10+ this year.

Whitgift 10+ : I mailed admission team regarding academic scholarship. They replied below. I don’t remember for 10+ , there was separate scholarship day. I think it was for 11+ only.

“Boys who were being considered for an Academic Scholarship were invited to a separate scholarship day”

That’s correct. At 10+ they decided on the scholarships based on the entrance exam and interview. I wonder if anyone got offered anything.

drizzledon · 10/02/2023 17:00

We received a scholarship for W10+, not big enough to definitely swing it but still much appreciated.

Has anyone received a sport scholarship at Trinity? I don’t think I’ve heard of any yet. Feels like it’s been a tough year for both offers and scholarships!

No news. Sigh. I said to myself I'm going to put down my phone and not pick it up until 5. I'm still sat here and have a work meeting to present at in a couple of mins. Argh

Did you get the emails from both schools now?

user1473290348 · 10/02/2023 20:01

Yes he got offers for both! The relief!!

Congratulations! Does he have a preference?

user1473290348 · 10/02/2023 23:30

His preference changes continuously.

We have some big decisions to make. We feel really grateful to have the two offers. But it will be a huge financial burden. Especially as we have other children. With the potential VAT charge and the usual annual increases, this certainly isn't cheap. We need to sit down and crunch some numbers!!

I understand. It’s nice to have the choice though! Well done to your son.
We also have to think through wether

Oops, sorry my message wasn’t finished.
We have to think it through wether we can take the offer too. It’s not an easy decision.

user1473290348 · 11/02/2023 14:09

Good luck with deciding @London2007!

And good luck everybody else with decision making/wait list etc.

We are aiming to make our decision quickly and therefore release one (or both) spaces so hopefully there will be some movement on the wait list.

Both amazing schools but as we have 3 kids to pay for in the future, this isn't an easy decision.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for all the comments/info. I've found it very useful - particularly as we don't live that close and all the knowledge I gained from when my daughter went through her 11 plus last year was for more local independent schools so no use this time around! Anyway, our son is very happy as he has been lucky to receive a 10 plus offer to Whitgift. It is not our nearest option by any means but the one school that he loves (it is a great fit for him in many ways but especially because of the hockey and drama opportunities and the diversity at the school really matters to us) so we are committed to making it work for him. We have a few options on how to manage the journey. One is that he will take the coach from Dulwich - I wondered whether anyone knows how reliable the coach is? It looks like it takes an hour from Dulwich and I wondered if it is the same length of journey coming home? Perhaps it is longer because of traffic?

The train will be easier but we don't think our son will be ready for this until year 7 at the earliest! At that point we may also consider one night of flexi-boarding, maybe on days when he has sporting fixtures, but only if he feels comfortable with this.

Hoping someone might have some knowledge on this. I know many of you aren't yet at Whitgift/may not go there but I thought perhaps there may be some guidance somewhere!

Congratulations to your son. He is one lucky boy with parents who are clearly committed making it work for him. I personally can’t advise you on the reliability of the coach service but I am fairly sure school can update you on that. I know they can help you with finding a “travel buddy” for your DS, an older boy who would take the same route/journey as your son on the train.
He would also be travelling with other boys on the same route on the coach, that’s a good way to get to know others they could then travel together on the train? I heard they tend to travel in groups, I am sure it wouldn’t take long to find others. Flexi boarding sounds like a good opportunity too. If Whitgift is the school he really wants he will find his way!
The drama opportunities are astonishing there, we liked everything about the school but this was on top of our list too. I told my son after the open day that I want to go to Whitgift too!

user1473290348 · 13/02/2023 16:57

Congratulations to you and your son @London7282 . I think it's great you have come to a decision. I can't help with your questions I'm afraid. But hopefully some others can.

I'm still in decision mode. It's such a difficult decision what we do. I think Trinity and Whitgift are amazing. But today I lunched with some friends with sons at Whitgift and Wilson's. The Whitgift son said they do the same stuff. They're all happy where they are. It's such a difficult one.

Hello all- question to 11+ applicants - when do you need to make your decision for Trinity and Whitgift?

I don't think there is one. But I guess you can call to see if you can visit. Are you choosing between Whitgift and other schools? Or just to get a better idea of Whitgift?

I'm sure Whitgift would be more than willing to arrange a time for you to pop in for a tour. It may even be on a school day, which is even better as you will have a real feel of a typical day at the school. Good luck!

Does anyone know the year group size at Trinity - just trying to compare the schools - thanks

Parkrunner1 · 14/02/2023 13:28

50-60 in Year 6 (10+ entry). Goes up to about 120 in Year 7 (11+ entry). Form classes of around 21/22 boys.

AnnieH01 · 14/02/2023 16:17

@parkrunner1 - thank you

We haven't received any of the offer in the post yet so wondered if Trinity were doing an offer event?

Parkrunner1 · 14/02/2023 20:46

There was no mention of an offer event in our pack of forms that came in the post, but we already have a child at Trinity so it’s possible they could just have left that piece of paper out of our pack!

drizzledon · 14/02/2023 21:19

The Trinity admissions website does mention an offer holders day. I’ve not seen it mentioned elsewhere though.

user1473290348 · 15/02/2023 08:04

Wondering if anybody has come to a decision on any offers they may have had? I'm really torn over what to do, but I'm keen to make a decision by the end of half term. Wondering what everybody is thinking.

pankajbh · 15/02/2023 09:35

@user1473290348 , I have decided for my son.. W 10+ and we have offer with no scholarship and no bursary. I am going to decline the offer today or tomorrow because I needed some kind of scholarship. Also, the main reason is: if I accept offer now, I am locked in and will have no choice (kind of) in 11+. I want to give a shot in 11+ again with wider options - Wilson's, Sutton Grammar and Wallington Grammar also added and see where it goes. It's a bit of gamble but I have decided to take it :)..
Phew , one more year !!!!

Trinity are definitely holding a decider tour and an academic scholars taster session for 13+ offer holders next week. Seems odd they wouldn't do the same for 10+ and 11+.
