Hello everybody, starting a thread for parents with children who have applied for 10+ this year.

DS was asked a short comprehension, hobbies, etc, but no abstract question nor any schools he applied to. But these varied from boys to boys. Ours was shorter than I expect. Not sure if it is good or bad sign. If you are interviewed by Mr. Michael, I think the chance is very high.

Daydreamscometrue · 18/01/2023 22:07

@AC7001 I don't imagine the time is an issue. Some children probably just answer more slowly or have more to say. We were meant to have another interviewer but the time and person were altered. Not sure why.

user1473290348 · 18/01/2023 22:12

Sounds like the 11+ interviews went well and we're promising. Good luck on offers day!

When you say rough score, do they give you ranking/percentile?

OP posts:
Daydreamscometrue · 18/01/2023 22:17

Not ranking or percentile for us. Just gave us a brief summary but no scores. It was the first thing mentioned as we sat down and the line from his creative piece.

I think it's very encouraging that they read a line. Obviously impressed them. Hope it all works out for your DS!

Do Whitgift tell you if it's an academic interview like Trinity do? Or will you know if you get invited to a further assessment? (If there is one).

I think we met with Mr. Beck, but not exactly sure if I remember the name correctly.

Mr Beck is also senior so also a promising sign!

@user1473290348 I don't believe they do academic interviews. Think they host an academic scholarship session instead of the interview. That wasn't mentioned to us so assuming he's not been selected.

AC7001 · 18/01/2023 22:41

But I haven't heard anyone invited to the so-called academic scholarship workshop yet. But then my sample is small, only about 10.

So maybe they are still selecting? You are interviewed by Mr. Michael so perhaps still have a chance I guess.

drizzledon · 18/01/2023 23:02

I think the academic scholarship day/workshop might be for 11+. I don’t it applies to 10+.

It sounds like it was a bursary/scholarship interview.

We've applied for a bursary so it was mentioned but it's not dealt with by the school. It's the Foundation that accept the documents for this.

Daydreamscometrue · 19/01/2023 06:49

@London2007 He said our son had done well across the board in the exams but I imagine that's said to many parents.

That is correct but the school will decide of the ranking order of the bursary applicants. Then the Foundation will distribute the money amongst the boys, starting with the 1st one ranked by the school. Until the pot money runs out they move down on the list….

I doubt it. Not all boys would have done well across the board.

@London2007 Ah I see. I was told 400 had applied for bursaries and that 10% are offered places I think. As we can't afford to accept a full fee paying place, it will be a no or offer with a bursary attached. We were asked if we could accept a full fee paying place so the competition is huge.

Yes, it is a fierce competition but having been contacted by the Foundation is a good sign as they only assess the ones the school has selected for being assessed. Your son did well to get to this stage.

Daydreamscometrue · 19/01/2023 07:43

@London2007 thanks for the feedback.

user1473290348 · 19/01/2023 20:11

Hope interviews are going well everybody. My DS had his at Whitgift. Quite short. Only about 10 mins. Parents followed for about 10 mins. Quite generic questions about hobbies and interests. They asked us why Whitgift.

We also had our 10+ Whitgift interview recently and I thought it was actually lovely. Very kind teacher, son came away very happy as did we. Whether he gets a place or not, it was a great experience which makes us even more sure we’d like him to go there. Good luck all.

That's great @maybein2022 .

Is W your first choice? Also, did they share your son's results? I intended to ask but totally forgot! Those 10 mins run quickly!

Did anybody participate in the drama scholarship workshop today? My nephew did for 11+. He told me they mixed with 10+.

Anybody know how they select children for this as it seems so subjective.

Daydreamscometrue · 20/01/2023 17:10

Has anyone done the academic scholarship day at Whitgift for 11 plus?

London2007 · 21/01/2023 14:01

Has the Whitgift “no” emails have gone out now? I found it strange they were not sent out when they started sending interview invites.

drizzledon · 21/01/2023 20:11

FYI at Trinity around 170 sat the exam and 100 are being interviewed for 75 offers. So fairly good odds although 25% will still not get offers which also feels high!
