Why is it considered okay to go in for private-school-bashing?

I met a friend today, who launched into a full-scale rant against 'shiny private school children'. As my DS is one of these 'shiny private school children', I thought it rather offensive. We are not fabulously wealthy; we don't have a 4WD or designer clothes; we can't afford to go on holiday anywhere, never mind abroad; we have shelved all plans to move house so that we can afford school fees. Why, oh why do people think it's acceptable to be rude to someone because of their school choice? I'd never dream of talking about her 'illiterate, chavvy, hoody state school children'!!

Yes, I know, that's why we will be 16% at private schools around here but at one stage my daughter's class by chance in one class was 50% Jewish so it's not just Asian either.

But the genetic thing was the girls boarding schools playing lacrosse - amazing tall girls and you'd see so very many who were blonde.

The looking a bit cleaner and smarter is a different point and there are a goodly number of private schools around the country which abandoned particular blazars because of bullying on the way to school by state school children of the posh one in the smart blazer going to school in areas where children make their own way to school.

Lol @ the taller you are the more you earn . DH is just under 5' 10" and certainly doesn't earn a pittance ! In fact all of the most successful men in the business he works for (he is one of) are under 5' 10", in fact DH is the tallest ! LOL.

I believe there is a confirmed correlation between height and earnings in men in this country.

Nomdeplume - Does he have built up shoes, like Sven?

... and private school kids have bad taste. Just think of it none of them comes to my Ds's private school in Chelsea FC jacket. They all wear same ol' boring uniform. No hoodies, no football tops, no football scarves. How can they be shinier?

Judy1234 · 16/11/2007 17:27

Taste is a very subjective thing. What is good taste for some is bad for others and neither is right nor wrong. People just like to live and go to school with people like them or often do anyway. I'm not saying that's good. In our case I wanted the children in school with very clever other children who were also from homes able to pay fees. The uniform was neither here nor there. Other parents choose by uniform or whether they like the teachers they meet. Some want a religious schools. Others want only posh or only working class or a huge mix of classes. What is important is that there is choice something that I am not sure all parents are able to obtain in all parts of the UK.

Why can't pople just do what they want? If you want to and have the money to send your children to private school, why does anyone else need to have a say? Why do they care? And in terms of "all the best get creamed off" so state schools lose out, I don't believe that, because if you pay, your child can be thick as a plank. Private schools probably have as good a mix as state schools for able/non able kids. Live and let live I say

xenia you don't even live in London, you live in Pinner for gods sake. PINNER!

honestly the way you go on anyone would think you were in Montpelier Square instead of some poxy suburb in Middlesex

twinsetandpearls · 17/11/2007 00:07

That;s a bid rude.

I used to teach in a school not too far from Pinner and I think I would have sent my dd to a private school rather than there. Awful place.

frogs · 17/11/2007 00:07

arf at PPH! So true.

fircone · 17/11/2007 12:06

I went out with a public schoolboy from Pinner. He was short. And dark. But he did have a very shiny motorbike.
