I have always made my feelings clear about private schools but the family has been working on me again and have ordered a proespectus for a private school that I have been idly flicking through and I have fallen in love with it and even - and this is a big deal for me - looked at the website.

For me this is a huge step and I am feeling sick with guilt, so guilty in fact that I have just re planned all my lessons tomorrow for my classes as some kind of penenance.

I need other socialist guardianistas to take me in hand.

We're the same, alycat. In fact I spent a joyous hour in the uniform shop yesterday hunting down two second-hand blazers in good nick for next year...

plummymummy · 29/06/2007 00:06

What does everyone think of grammars?

twinsetandpearls · 29/06/2007 00:07

I know of Wymondham School but I thought that was a state schoolor do you mean Wymondham college? I am a huge fan of Christ's Hospital and would like to see more like it.

I would be a fan of grammars if I thought that all kids had a genuine equal chance of getting in.

But i am not totally anti grammar and I know dp has been hoping that I would consider lancaster grammar for dd.

Being state educated I'm afraid I am ignorant of those institutions duchesse. However, dh had an assisted place at his private school and sil won a scholarship at hers.

alycat · 29/06/2007 00:10

I am a popular mummy in the second hand shop as I have worked out the dye formula to restore the drab faded grey workhouse pinafores to their original dark grey workhouse pinafore colour! My returns to be sold were better than the new ones!!

Two blazers, that's a bit decadent! (Or do you have 2 children?)

twinsetandpearls · 29/06/2007 00:10

If possible I do want a faith school for dd.

I am not aware of a Catholic grammar up here

duchesse, love, I was being droll.

Though teas and gowns was the stuff of my schooling, hustling bustling corridors the stuff of dh's - guess which type of ed, we each prefer

duchesse · 29/06/2007 00:12

I meant Wymondham College, sorry.

duchesse · 29/06/2007 00:15

Oh and alycat- yes, two children -well three in total, but uniform is distributed in a very different (cooperative) way at youngest child's school, so no need to pay. Just hunting is enough. And blazers are very keenly priced in the older two's school- never over £5, which is brill.

twinsetandpearls · 29/06/2007 00:17

The school I am considering is supposed to be more mixed than other private schools.. there I go justifying again,

speedymama · 29/06/2007 00:19

Out of interest, what is it that the school can provide that you could not provide at home?

norkmaiden · 29/06/2007 00:19

twinset...you know you want to..

If I could ever afford it (which I doubt) I'd deffo consider it for my kids. Dayschool though, not boarding under any circs (which was what I did from 11 and it was a bit miserable - as I realise increasingly).

TheDuchessOfNorks · 29/06/2007 00:20

Get thee to the birching table. I bet that private school has one of these for children that say 'toilet'.

twinsetandpearls · 29/06/2007 00:26

speedymamma I don't want her to board so she will still be at home, I want her education to echo the cathokic upbringing she has at home and my experience of teaching in a catholic school tells me this will stop when she starts secondary school. I want her to keep that awe and wonder.

"I want her education to echo the cathokic upbringing she has at home and my experience of teaching in a catholic school tells me this will stop when she starts secondary school. I want her to keep that awe and wonder". I don't know - I had a truly fantastic Catholic education at state primary, so so at single sex state comp, and great again at Christian Brothers sixth form. And now I'm an atheist. You can only plan and hope so far; I know that my mum is disappointed that I'm no longer a Catholic, but she does know that she sent me to schools where I'd be happy, and that's it for me. Where will your daughter be most happy?
