If you did GCSEs between 1988 and 1990 which subjects did you do?

I can't for the life of me remember all of my subjects. I know I did 10 but I've lost one.

Could you list yours for me in case it jogs my memory. I sat my GCSEs in 1989.

Do you remember the exam board?

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 13/08/2017 23:11

You've got me thinking now what I did and I can only remember 8 of them (unless I've double counted one twice) & I know I sat 9 of them in 1989.
When I started work with my current employer 9 years ago they wanted to see all of my chuffing certificates, so all GSCE's, A levels, degrees and law school grades. That took lots of frantic scrambling around and calls to various exam boards and the like. Managed it somehow but god only knows which draw in which house it's all shoved in now if I ever need it again.

I did 8 in 1988

Everyone had to do Maths, English x 2, an MFL and a science.

Those who were good at Maths did it a year early and did a computer science course or AO Maths in what was then the 5th year.

VisitorFromAlphaStation · 14/08/2017 16:31

Good point about being a crammer and regurgitating for the test. I can identify. I took the equivalent but from another country (and which one will be obvious shortly). Subjects: Swedish language, Swedish literature, English (2nd lang.), French (3rd lang.), German (4th lang.), History, Religion, Philosophy, Psychology, Civics, Mathematics (the advanced course), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art, Art history, Physical Education. Seventeen subjects in total. Oh, and Programming, I forgot, but in those days that was considered part of the math class... No latin though. But I learned a little anyway, just for fun. Maximum possible at school nine.

By today's standards with 1A, 5Bs and 2Cs not great.
Still got three As at A level and then on to one of the most difficult courses ( vet med).

Newsuitcase I did my GCSEs around then, like you doing the double sciences etc. Like you, I did Business Studies - but we got a GCSE in IT as part of that. I reckon you might be the same. We didn't have any extra IT lessons as such, it was just lessons in Business Studies, but by submitting some of the work via Word (or whatever wordprocessor was used back then) somehow that gave us a GCSE in IT too. Could that be it? Makes sense as to why you wouldn't remember it.

sashh · 23/08/2017 13:51

Did you do additional maths? If it looked like you were heading for A Level maths/science then that might have been an option.

Most places you would have done

English X 2
Maths
Double Science
Optional subjects

From what you have said you had 2 languages and you would have done some sort of humanity so History, geography, possibly geology or sociology.

You might have done European studies if you were doing 2 languages.

Not sure IT was an option then, it would have been computer studies/science. RE was compulsory to study but a lot of schools didn't do it for GCSE

OK how does this sound

English X 2
Maths
Double Science
History or Geography or RE or Humanities or European studies - you might have 1 or 2 grades for that
2 languages

That's 8.

If the school wanted a balanced profile then some sort or Art, technical drawing, Music, dance, Home Ec, woodwork/metal work as a practical or art subject.

?Then, er, well not sure further maths? Statistics

Possibly a 'movement' subject like PE?
