OP posts:

Good to know Chewbacca, MiniJack is worrying about this.

LordStrange, good at Eng would be a bonus in Bucks, it's given a 50% weighting here.

hmc · 15/10/2014 10:01

Ha ha - Master Smuggery's mum is now boasting about how much Master Smuggery passed by (quite a bit above the past mark), and enjoyed telling me that another boy who had passed said " Well at least I won't be going to Grammar alone, Master Smuggery is sure to have passed, and so will boy B" - i.e. no mention of my ds, the implication being that my ds wasn't expected him to pass Grin

Am sure what ChewBecca's ds reports is right. It will all be a flash in the pan and yesterday's news after the first 24 hours

hmc · 15/10/2014 10:02

sorry - the implication being that he wasn't expecting my ds to pass (got my words muddled)

Hakluyt · 15/10/2014 10:04

Be careful. My niece, who passed on HT's appeal (due among other things to her not starting to speak English til the end of year 4) was made very miserable by another girl telling her that she wouldn't keep up, she would struggle......it was very unpleasant and lasted until year 9..........Sad

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 15/10/2014 10:25

Hak We had that with both DDs from two other parents - one whose kids got in (one on appeal) and one whose kids didn't. Apparently because my girls are dyspraxic and tutored (because music theory plays a HUGE part in the 11+!) they are doomed to struggle. Actually, they do have a point about the dyspraxia, it does make things very difficult in some subjects and it's still A Thing for DD1 even in Y12 (in a recent Geog assessment, they had to gather data, present the data to the class, and then answer an exam question. She got the highest mark on the exam question but her full assessment grade was lower because her data presentation was shtako. But data presentation isn't an element of the actual AS or A level. It's presented to you if you need it. So her assessment was marked down because she's dyspraxic, not because she did badly on the actual bit that is relevant to the exam). But still - even acknowledging for their challenges they are both doing just fine. And those challenges would be present had they gone to the comp too. I think a lot of people are just a bit bitter and competitive. Best to ignore (but easier said than done).

Hak, is that the niece who is now at Oxbridge by any chance?

kilmuir · 15/10/2014 10:31

Blimey, i never found out my DD's pass mark. Not on letter, you had to ring up the school.
They are all reassessed when they get there anyway

MrsMcRuff · 15/10/2014 11:09

Blimey, i never found out my DD's pass mark.

You get the whole lot here. Not only the overall mark, but the marks for the 3 individual papers, all by letter!

SugarPlumTree · 15/10/2014 11:35

First text in from friend. Her DS passed bug only just so may well not get a space as we are out of catchment. He was doing several papers a week so I think it is a done deal that DS hasn't passed with his one paper.

Other friend has envelope buy not allowed to open it till after school. I'd really like it if the postman could just get here so I can get it over and done with. It's this 'has not met required standard 'thing that is getting to me.

This has made me realise I am going to be very shit at waiting for DD'S GCSE results next year.

Hakluyt · 15/10/2014 12:33

"Hak, is that the niece who is now at Oxbridge by any chance?"

Yep. Grin

And the other girl concerned didn't even get an interview. Not that I hold grudges or anything............

SugarPlumTree · 15/10/2014 14:01

Oh bless him, DS failed by half a mark. Not a bad effort though with so little preparation and I am proud of him.

SlightlyJadedJack · 15/10/2014 14:06

Oh SugarPlumTree, quite right to be proud of him, doubt many children could have achieved that with so little prep. Any chance of appealing with such a close score?

SugarPlumTree · 15/10/2014 14:27

He got a low score on his verbal of 95 compared to 134 in his CATS test last year so I guess we could use it to suggest he under performed.

But he decided in the Spring he didn't want to sit the test and it was only as he is a bit fed up with some of the boys in his class that he decided to enter last minute. I can't say for sure as I haven't looked round the Grammar school but I do feel he will be better off in our local upper in higher sets and mixed sex, which is why he wasn't going to do it until his last minute change of mind. He wasn't sure he would want to go if he got in he said.

Not too many entered from his Middle school this year so at least the top sets will remain fairly intact next September. We'll leave well alone I think, I just worry it will knock his confidence but in a way I guess he'll learn now that he'll have to put the work so not a bad thing. Just not looking forward to telling him.

Good luck to everyone still waiting.

SlightlyJadedJack · 15/10/2014 14:29

For those of you who may have been through this before, if you are appealing (or selection review) what schools do you put down on your forms? The point of them moving the date of the exam was so that you put either grammars or secondary schools depending on whether your child passes. Do you have to list all the schools you want? Is there room on the form to cover both options?

SlightlyJadedJack · 15/10/2014 14:31

Fair enough Sugar, you have to do what you feel is best for him. I think any knock to confidence will soon be forgotten, certainly once he's at his new school. Smile

Hakluyt · 15/10/2014 14:32

I can only speak for Kent. Here, you appeal to th school you want to go to. So you put that school first on the list, you are automatically turned down because you haven"t passed the test, and they you appeal. You can't appeal to a school you haven't applied to.

SlightlyJadedJack · 15/10/2014 14:37

I wonder if it's different here then. We have the choice of a selection review which you have to submit within ten working days. I think this is a review by head teachers of the county schools (but might have made that up!). In the meantime you make your choices to County before the 31st Oct. If you don't get through the selection review you can go to a full appeal later.

hmc · 15/10/2014 14:52

Hakluyt -karma for your niece Smile

My goodness Sugarplum, that's a very close miss. I hope your ds is okay with it.

Frikadellen · 15/10/2014 18:56

It is a no for dd3. However during our extensive search for a 2ndary for her we both fell in love with 1 particular non grammar school. So wasnt a biggy for either of us. She is happy and I am relieved we don['t have the " should we shouldnt we" questions. Her BF didnt pass either so they have each other for comfort.

Taffeta · 15/10/2014 19:17

DS passed. We are all pleased, but sad for some of his friends that didn't.

hmc · 15/10/2014 19:49

Glad you are happy with your dd's school options Frikadellen and well done to your ds Tafetta

areyoubeingserviced · 15/10/2014 21:42

Dd passed .
However, her friends didn't , so now dd is upset

goingmadinthecountry · 15/10/2014 22:30

Dd passed the Kent test and the Shepway . V happy dd!

BramwellBrown · 16/10/2014 00:01

DS has passed, Dsis hasn't, which is a bit of a surprise as Dsis generally does better at school (they are at the same school)

SlightlyJadedJack · 16/10/2014 06:16

Congratulations to those that passed and big hugs to those that didn't. I hope they all end up in schools where they are happy and will thrive. Smile

I've still got two days of nail biting and I'm not sure if I can cope!!!!!

InMySpareTime · 16/10/2014 07:17

It's a nerve-wracking wait, isn't it, Jack?
Well done to all the DCs, they tried their best, whichever side of the pass mark they ended up.
AGGS results posted tomorrow then SGS the 20th and we're done with results.
Why does it have to take so blooming long to machine mark the papers?
