Is anyone else waiting for 11+ results?

6 days to go and starting to get anxious...!

OP posts:

I did think the schools probably mark quite quickly, then follows a period of validating and standardising plus the admin to circulate so last week I was thinking 'his score is sitting in a database / on a spreadsheet somewhere, just give it to me now' Smile

Taffeta · 12/10/2014 17:46

In Kent, the HTs have had the scores since the end of Sept, giving them time to make any appeals. HT appeals account for c.3% of the 24% total that pass.

I believe HTs find out if their appeals have been successful very close to the date parents get results, this Wednesday.

Taffeta · 12/10/2014 17:47

Mum and Hak - thanks for your reassurances and advice, appreciated.

SlightlyJadedJack · 12/10/2014 18:22

What, do HTs appeal on your behalf without you knowing? Confused. Do they do that everywhere?

Hakluyt · 12/10/2014 18:50

In Kent they do. The results come back to the school, the Head appeals any anomalies. Usually that results in another 2% or so passing. Then then the results go to parents. Then parents can appeal. I think that gets another 1/2% through.

smokepole · 12/10/2014 19:05

lets hope the head teachers, don't put their own views about selection above the child's interest and back an appeal for pupils who are the right level. I also hope anyone who scores 380 or whatever is 20 points above the number of points required ,does not get refused because of of being a couple of marks down on 1 part of the test.

Taffeta · 12/10/2014 19:11

smokepole - not sure what you mean re score? In past years in Kent (it changed this year and because they fucked it up so much supposedly the pass mark has been dropped ) there is a minimum score for each paper, and a minimum aggregate score. So if someone drops a few marks of pass in one paper, and this lowers the aggregate, depending on all sorts of stuff the HT might appeal.

Taffeta · 12/10/2014 19:14

Ah no I've reread it and assume you mean if someone passes the aggregate but doesn't meet the required minimum on one paper.

I guess it depends. If Maths score for eg is very weak, and school levels aren't that strong, I guess it would be difficult for an HT to appeal.

smokepole · 12/10/2014 19:18

Taffeta. DD1 scored 380 (360) pass on the Kent test but because she only scored 114 on NVR . Her head teachers had "political beliefs " anti selection so he refused to appeal . I read somewhere it was 338 this year which seems very low.

smokepole · 12/10/2014 19:19

Taffeta. This is from October 2006 so quite a while a go.

Taffeta · 12/10/2014 19:45

smokepole - Sad how unprofessional of the HT, apart from anything else

smokepole · 12/10/2014 19:50

He believed the only way to change the system and improve the Modern schools was for bright children to go there and improve them from within.
He was a nice man though very misguided in his beliefs that to sacrifice children is the way to change. I have posted about this before as Hakult knows.

Hakluyt · 12/10/2014 21:34

A head teacher would know that the is no way a head teacher's appeal would be successful if the child's score was significantly below the pass mark unless there were major extenuating circumstances. That's how the system works.

smokepole · 12/10/2014 22:44

Hakluyt. I does not matter any more (been done that route with my other postings). What I will say though is with scores of 134 Maths 132 Verbal Reasoning 114 Non Verbal Reasoning. That had to be very good grounds for an appeal in any-ones book. DD2 basically failed the system by putting D instead of A a couple of times on a NVR test.

That is why the system needs to have a bit of common sense to it, regarding appeals . Anyone who can get a score 20 points above a target, is clearly able enough or bright enough for selective education. Otherwise what is the point of having a points target!.

smokepole · 12/10/2014 22:46

DD1 sorry .

smokepole · 12/10/2014 22:46

DD2 passed as previously posted yr 11 Grammar.

SlightlyJadedJack · 13/10/2014 09:23

Despite me thinking it wasn't on his mind, DS has said this morning 'only five days till I find out if I passed'. He is worried Sad. I have reassured him that in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter and also reminded him of the good schools we have as an alternative. Roll on Friday when this is all over.

SlightlyJadedJack · 13/10/2014 09:38
SugarPlumTree · 13/10/2014 09:45

Congratulations to those who have had the results they hoped for and to the DC's Smile

It seems DS is expecting to have passed, despite not finishing two papers. He thinks he will have made up marks on the other two. I thought I had done a good job of the well you've only had 3 weeks to practice and only sat one timed paper plus you are up against children who have been preparing a year or even longer thing. Obviously not.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 13/10/2014 09:59

I'm veering between slightly hysterical and in denial Hmm We had a letter from school, urging us to impress upon miniAvon that it is not a "pass or fail" situation, but rather a selection process, to which DS replied, "Well, it is really a pass or fail situation, Mum" Sad. Ho hum.

SlightlyJadedJack · 13/10/2014 10:10

Thing is he's right Avon. We're all told to not use the F word but kids aren't stupid. All you can do is reinforce the positives if they don't get the result they're hoping for.

I have also just seen elsewhere that the Bucks HTs will now have the results. I may go and pick up DS after school today (normally walks) and just look straight in her eyes and see if she turns away or smiles. Grin

AvonCallingBarksdale · 13/10/2014 10:43

Really, they have the results? I read upthread that in Kent the HTs have the results earlier, but I didn't realise they do in Bucks, too. Our HT is no big fan of the 11+, so it'd be hard to guage her expression, I think Grin

SlightlyJadedJack · 13/10/2014 10:50

Apparently so. Our HT hates it too but I wonder how good she is at hiding her pity? Grin

jeee · 13/10/2014 10:53

Jack, don't even go there. Honestly. It will just leave you a nervous wreck. This is my third 11+ wait, so I know how you're feeling. But if you see the head, she won't be thinking about Jack junior's 11+ score - and you'll be reading all sorts into every word/facial expression.

I try to avoid all teachers in the waiting period to avoid this.

SlightlyJadedJack · 13/10/2014 11:02

I'm only joking jeee, I wouldn't actually do this! Grin
